Imlil Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see

Imlil is the ideal base for trekking, hiking or camping in the Atlas mountains. If you are coming from Marrakesh your first stop will be Asni. Asni is the end of the line for bus and taxis coming from Marrakesh. From here, you can take a pick-up or taxi. The 17 km trip from Asni to Imlil is startling in its natural beauty. As the road begins to climb, the beauty of the valley, river and small villages look more like paintings than reality. The air in Imlil is crisp and clear as the town stands at an altitude of 1740 meters. Although the town has no particular sights it has a relaxed and refreshing atmosphere. Paths and streams are plentiful in the area, if you need to stretch your legs after the trip. There are a number of auberges / hostels, www.imlil.org gives general information about accommodation options in the village.

For mountain guides, check out the "Mountain guides office" bureau.guides@yahoo.fr tel: 00 212 24 485626. They are based in a corner of the main car park, opposite Cafe Soleil, where there is a noticeboard. There are a number of experienced and qualified guides, including Jamal Imerhane ( www.toubkalguide.com). He can arrange treks including mules, camping and food.

The big hike is from here to the top of Toubkal. After the snow has melted, it is a walk rather than a climb, a serious effort, but quite straightforward. Aroumd is the next largest community in the valley and a spectacular village with one of the most fertile stretches of the Atlas.

From there you can walk to Sidi Chamarouch (8 km) which is stands near a small waterfall. Moroccan pilgrims come here to visit a marabout shrine (strictly forbidden for non-Muslims). The shrine probably originated from an ancient nature cult. There are a couple grocery shops and rooms here, if you need a refresher.

The Toubkal refuge, marking the spring snow line at 3200 meters, is your next stop. You can sleep at the refuge for 30 DH. They also prepare dinner for 25 DH. The hut can be quite full in summer. This is where the trail begins so you may want to talk to trekkers coming down about the conditions of the trail. The climb up the mountain should take about 3 hours from here doing the Southern circuit. The Northern circuit is a more ambitious ascent (4 h30 m) and a bad way to descend. The WSW Ridge (Ounoums) circuit is recommended only for experienced rock climbers.

In winter the peak deserves respect and full winter alpine gear. The weather is ussually fine, but storms do blow in quickly in the winter season, so be prepared. It has been known for lightly equipped parties to be caught out by bad weather as late as June, and there often patches of snow around into July.

IMLIL - AROUMD - SIDI CHAMHAROUCH - IMLIL

Tour guide In Imlil
http://toubkl.guide.free.fr
E.mail : aztat.trek@gmail.com
We set off towards the southwest skirting the Berber town of Imlil (1740m), known as Morocco ’s ‘Little Chamonix’, set, as we are, in the upper level foothills of the Western High Atlas mountains of the Toubkal National Park. With streams and paths branching out in all directions, we traverse the Tamatert Valley until we reach the hamlet of Achelm to strike out for some 4km towards the south towards the Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd) (1843m), passing the hamlets of Taourirt, Targa, and Imoula, up and down the stark slopes, the jagged Western High Atlas peaks of the Jbel Toubkal Massif - at 4167m the highest peak in North Africa - before us, with her awe-inspiring sister peaks the Jbels Aguelzim (3547m), Aksouâl (3847m) and the Adrar Adj (3122m) watching us all the way.

We shall stop at Aroumd to visit this rather singular village in the Assif Aït Mizane Valley , built seemingly house upon house on a large moraine spur overlooking ancient irrigated terraced fields of barley, corn and vegetables and always surrounded by almond and walnut trees. We thence carry on for another 8km.to the equally-quaint village of Sidi Chamharouch, a Berber village set beside a waterfall and small stream, again with its pisé homes seemingly built somewhat chaotically one into another. This village is a place of pilgrimage for devout Moslems and it is where there is a marabout shrine – forbidden to non-Moslems - said to be a relic of a pre-Islamic religious and naturalist cult.
We take a break for a picnic, within full view of Jbel Toubkal, prior to setting off back down the other side of the valley at a gentle pace back to the delightful Douar ACHAYN .

__________Things to do
Edit This
i
the Imlil about the same height as the Alps and Rockies, are excellent for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter
Just south of Marrakech, the foothills of the Atlas are a patchwork of emerald green terraced fields, rising to rugged barren peaks sliced through by dramatic valleys and escarpments, and eventually opening out onto the awesome landscapes of the pre-Sahara.

In the High Atlas less than ninety minutes away from Marrakech, there are lush garden terraces and little rivers contrasting with the harsh rocky wilderness, and it is here that one finds the Toubkal National Park with the highest mountain in North Africa, Jebel Toubkal (4167m). The local Berbers are reserved but friendly, and hiking from Imlil will reveal a variety of wildlife including several species of butterfly, squirrels, vultures, larks, and golden eagles as well as large herds of Barbary sheep and goats.
