Hokkaido is the northernmost of the four big islands that make up Japan. It is really a great place if you are an outdoor enthusiast. There are many many hiking possibilities in the great national parks such as Daisetsuzan and there are some good skiing slopes (Sapporo hosted the winter olympics once).

Daisetsuzan N.P. is the largest National Park in Japan. It consists of several mountain groups, volcanoes, forests and lakes. It is incredibly good for hiking and skiing.

The main entrances to the park are in Kamikawa and Asahikawa in the North, Furano in the West and Shintoku in the south. all of these cities can be reached by train from Sapporo.

There are many options for hiking here, from a few hours to a week or more across the whole park. There are trails connecting the far south to the far north, also out east. Daisetsuzan is bigger than Kanagawa prefecture and to hike all the trails takes not days but years!

In southern Daisetsuzan (Furano Area) you can find fuming volcanoes, spring flowers galore, waterfall canyons, shy Pikkas, local hotels and much more. The only thing Southern Daisetsuzan doesn't have is a ropeway.

Sounkyo is the main tourist hub in the park. There are a bunch of ugly hotsprings hotels. Nearby the hotels are waterfalls and the trail/ropeway to Kuro Dake.

There are many huts in the mountains you can stay for free in. Be sure to Filter or boil your water from rivers and lakes in Hokkaido.

Furano is one of Japan's best skiing resorts with excellent facilities for powder skiing. It is easily reached from Asahikawa or takikawa by train.

Hakodate is the largest city in southern Hokkaido. One of the first cities in Japan to be opened to trade, as Yokohama and Kobe there are some signs of foreign influence. Hakodate was also the capital of the short-lived Republic of Ezo in the aftermath of the Meiji Restoration.

Niseko has been discovered as the powder snow capital of Japan with the ever growing number of Australian and other foreign tourists. This boom has been blown out of proportion by the local press-the vast majority of tourists are still Japanese. Having said that though, over 10,000 ski enthusiasts were supposed to have visited Niseko this season alone.

The snow is what brings people - the quality and quantity(over 15 m in a good season!) is fast becoming world renown. Not only Australians but many expats living in SE Asia have discovered the delights of the Niseko area-the snow, people, hotsprings, food and culture all combine to create a unique ski holiday experience.

Niseko is located 120km or so from Sapporo -the regional capital of Hokkaido the northern most island of Japan. The scenery is stunning-volcanoes, lakes, rivers and of course great mountains to explore anytime of year. Hokkaido is Japan's "last frontier" and is a very different place to mainland Japan.

The Niseko area is famous for its outdoors and agricultural production.

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido. The city itself is not really beautiful, but is an excellent base for exploring the rest of the island. This is the place to arrange your trip end then head for places like Daisetsuzan national park, Akan or Rishirito Island.

As long as you are in Saporro you might as well enjoy yourself, and this is actually one of the specialities of the city. It has more nightlife than any other city north of Tokyo. The Susukino district has countless bars, nightclubs and hostess bars. To get some idea of where to head out for a night on the town try checking the bilingual website sappororestaurant.jp where you can sometimes find some cheap coupons and up to date information about special dining offers. They also have a good Japanese food section which introduces the main Japanese cuisines.

During daytime you should visit the Botanical Garden in the Batchelor Memorial Museum, the Clocktower -the major landmark of Sapporo- and the Beer Brewery, the first in Japan. The Geijitsu no mori(Art Park) located just outside of Makomanai is a great place to spend a sunny day wandering the outdoor sculpture garden(approx.600yen).You can take a bus from Bus-Centre Mae bus terminal.

During winter the Sapporo snow festival attracts visitors from all over the country to see the huge (15 to 20 meters high) snowsculptures that are on display all over Odori Park. You can rent cross country skis for free in Nakajima park.
