With a population of 6 million inhabitants, Hessen is the fifth largest 'Bundesland' (regional state) in Germany, covering an area of 21,000 sqkm. The state is the most important financial centre in the country and has one of the strongest economies of any region in Europe. Not only is Hessen a pivot of finance with over 400 banks, the stock exchange and the Bundesbank (Germany's central bank, setting interest rates and controlling money supply) in Frankfurt am Main; it is also an important industrial and technological base, host to countless international trade fairs and the site of the Rhine-Main airport, largest freight carrier and second-largest passenger airport in Europe.

At the same time Hessen is a typical vacation region full of diversion: sailboarding, windsurfing and sailing at the Edersee, hang-gliding and gliding at the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön, skiing and toboggan at the Feldberg in the Taunus, horse-riding while making camping on a farm. Hessen offers lots of golf, wandering, cycling and tennis facilities. Wiesbaden is a famous international spa and also the capital of Hessen. Frankfurt am Main, or 'Mainhatten' is a commercial and industrial city and offers you a lot of really interesting museums. A cultural jewel is also the Schloss Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel. The old university town of Marburg with the early Gothic Elisabethkirche attracts visitors from all over the world. Worth to be seen are also the small town of Miltenberg and Worms with its cathedral.

Small cities with half-timbered houses can be visited in all parts of Hessen.

Giessen is a more than 850-years old city in the middle of Hessen, between Frankfurt and Marburg. It is located on the River Lahn and has more than 73.000 inhabitants. Though the inner city was destroyed in World War 2, there are a few beautiful Sites as the Burgmannenhaus, The Old Castle and the Zeughaus.

Giessen is characterized by its University, the second oldest and second largest in Hesse. With more than 28.000 students the city has the highest student density in Germany. Famous Scientists like Roentgen and Liebig worked here in the 19th century. The exploration of science has tradition: the Liebig Museum in the original laboratory and the Mathematikum, a hands-on museum, invite the visitors until today.

The surrounding Region Middle Hassia has a strong nature attitude: green highlands with picturesque castles are connected by hiking routes. Canoeing on the River Lahn is very popular.

Two days after Christmas - Market Place with City Hall

Marburg is a cute University town in Hessen. It is chiefly known for its Protestant university, founded in 1527 by Philip of Hesse. Marburg grew in the 12th century around a castle, Marc's Burg, it was chartered in 1227 and served as the residence of the landgraves of Hesse. Marburg became part of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau in 1866.

The castle, which still dominates the picturesque city, was the scene of the famous Marburg Colloquy, held (1529) under the auspices of Philip of Hesse; it failed to bring about agreement between Luther and Melanchthon on the one side and Zwingli on the other.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary is buried in the fine Gothic church (13th–14th cent.) dedicated to her; the remains of Field Marshal Hindenburg and of Frederick William I and Frederick II of Prussia were transferred to the church soon after World War II.

Other highlights include the Deutsche Ritterorden ("Order of Teutonic Knights"), The Old town, the University and the Town Hall.

Pension Blattersbach
Since the beginning of the nineteenth century Rudesheim has been an attraction
for English and German poets alike, and is today, considering the modest number of residents one of the most visited towns in the country.

Historical landmarks, such as the Klunkhardshof, the fortified Adler Tower, the thousand-year old Broemser castle and the ruins of the Ehrenfels Castle invite you to linger. Those seeking peace and tranquillity will find it in the extensive forests of the nature park Rhein-Taunus, in the natural beauty of the vineyards, or in the hidden alleyways of the town.

From the vantage points of the Niederwald, the visitor can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Rhine valley with the Nahe river estuary and the beautiful uniformity of the steep vineyards. Talking of wine: enjoy the superb Ruedesheimer Riesling, together with music and dancing, in the Drosselgasse or in the numerous inns, wine bars and taverns.

Eibingen (District of)
More than a thousand years old, the history of this pleasant little wine- growing

village is closely connected to Hildegard of Bingen, who founded a monastery here in 1165. The Catholic parish church now stands on its foundations, where her relics are still kept in a precious shrine. Named after her, the present Benedictine abbey was built at the beginning of this century and dominates the town where cosy inns, guesthouses and wine bars offer you their hospitality.

Windeck (District of)
Nestling among the woodlands and vineyards, “The Windeck” rises to an altitude of 250 to 300 metres, with a panoramic view over the Rheingau. Holidaymakers seeking absolute peace and quiet, who enjoy hiking in the forests and vineyards can relax in the many country inns, private rooms and apartments. The Rudesheim town centre
is a half-hour away on foot.

Assmannshausen / Rhine (City of)
On the most romantic part of the Rhine river where the Rhine valley scenery is most impressive, lays the historical wine-growing village of Assmannshausen with its narrow streets and picturesque houses with pointed gables.

Not only the mighty Rhine dominates the landscape, but also the impressive Rheinstein Castle on the opposite side, the woodlands of the Taunus range, and the hanging slopes of colourful vineyards.

First mentioned in 1108, Assmannshausen has since then been primarily connected with wine-growing, and over the last two centuries has developed as a holiday resort offering a whole variety of activities. Nature-lovers feel just as much at home here as do gourmets in the quality restaurants and cosy wine taverns with romantic terraces tempt the visitor to taste the Red Burgundy of Assmannshausen, one of the most famous German red wines.

Aulhausen (City of)
Two kilometres inland from Assmannshausen, set among rolling fields and dense woods, is another wine-growing town named Aulhausen, an ideal starting point for the many well-signposted hiking routes through the nature park Rhein-Taunus, offering beautiful views across the vineyards and over the wooded hilltops down to the Rhine valley.

With the Niederwald monument close by, families are well catered for with various leisure activities such as pony and coach riding during the day and to make it complete a visit to one of the homely inns and taverns in the evening.

Presberg (City of)
Twelve kilometres to the north-west is situated on a plateau 450meter above Rudesheim and is its highest suburb. Surrounded by beautiful valleys and green hills, with an unbroken view over the Taunus and Hunsrueck ranges it is a paradise for nature lovers and the well-marked nature trails invite you to discover the area. In winter the ski cross country tracks are clearly laid out.

The dramatic monument, nearly 38 meters high, built from 1877-1883 according to plans by Johann Schilling of Dresden, is no longer in vogue. It symbolizes the reestablishment of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The main figure is Germania, holding the imperial crown in her raised right hand and the imperial sword in her left hand. The heights of the Niederwald can be reached via cable car and chairlift from Ruedesheim and Assmannshausen, respectively.

Catholic parish church on market square. The church dates from the 14th century and is said to have been built by the knight and crusader Johann Broemser. The half moon and star on the weather vane atop the church tower are a reminder of the days of the crusades. The church was almost completely destroyed in 1944, but was rebuilt of quarried brick typical of the Rhine area. From the early 10th to the early 19th centuries it was the property of the archbishops of Mainz. They converted the old fortress into a residence in the 12th century. Only the southeastern portion was destroyed by the Duke of Longville. A mine path to the keep bears witness to its invincibility. ___________History
Edit This

1883 the Niederwald monument had its inauguration.

1884 the first cable car goes up to the Niederwald.

1885 the work is taken up for a second cable-car from Assmannshausen to the Niederwald monument. At that time 'Mass tourism" began to Ruedesheim am Rhein.

1904 the tourist association was formed. It had then 118 members, today it has 319. Already speedboat from the Koeln-Duesseldorfer shipping compmy travelled on the Rhine, it was advertised in Germany and foreign newspapers, it was negotiated with the railways to connect special trains with Ruedesheim, but also complained because of the impossible health damaging fumes which the steam trains released when passing.

1906 There were two tourist associations between Mainz md Cologne - one in Koenigswinter and the other in Ruedesheim.

1927 the first tourist office and youth hostel opened.

From 1930 there were three guesthouses. It was during this time that many of the famous Rhine songs became popular.

1932 Ruedesheim celebrated it's first wine festival

Rüsselsheim is the largest town in the Kreis Groß-Gerau in the Rhein-Main-Gebiet. It lies beside the river Main not far away from the mouth into the Rhein at Mainz.

Rüsselsheim has 59.656 inhabitants (30.06.2002), a lot because of the big employer Opel.

In the year 1868 Adam Opel founded a sewing-machine-factory. After the death of Adam Opel his widow and his sons startet later, at 1898 the first cars.

In addition to the Opel-Factory an other reason for a lot of commuters and some companies to settle in Rüsselsheim is the very good transport-connection to Frankfurt/Main, Wiesbaden, Mainz and Darmstadt via highway, train and a rapid-transit railway.

To Rüsselsheim belong the suburbs Bauschheim and Königstädten.

- Equally interesting is the protestant Schlosskirche from the early 18th century.
- All over Weilburg, you can look at the half timbered houses from the 16th -19th centuries.
-The Neptunbrunnen (Well of Neptune) form 1709.
- The Kalvarienberg and the chapel on the old graveyard.
- One unique thing to look for in Weilburg is the Weilburger Tunnel that separates cars, trains and boats in three adjacent tunnels.

Beautifully situated between the Taunus highlands in the north and the Rhine in the south, Hesse's capital is a beautiful, elegant and vibrant city where sports and the arts are equally at home. Its 26 hot springs were already worth a mention for the writers of ancient Rome, and today Wiesbaden combines the attractions of a modern conference and trade fair venue with the old-world charm of one of the great spas of yesteryear - and a rich historical heritage including imposing ruins, castles, churches and other monuments.

Thanks to its location in the heart of the Rhine-Main-area Wiesbaden has become an important economic centre and seat of many international companies. Nowadays two out of three people are employed by service providers (public services included), but there is still a strong chemical industry.

As a general rule you can say that Frankfurt is the city of (banking) business and Wiesbaden the place to stay and live...
