| Hannover Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see The "U" of Hannover The "U" of Hannover laudia1975-Laurentiu Hannover (engl. Hanover), formerly sharing the king with the British Empire and today the City of Trade Fairs - including CeBIT, the biggest IT-Fair of all - was host to the first World Exposition that took place in Germany and the first of the new Millenium. During the time of the EXPO 2000 the capital of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) welcomed 20 million visitors from all over the world. |
|
| But apart from the EXPO, which was certainly a point of main interest,
Hannover has a lot to offer to the visitor. A modern city, it's also rich in
tradition, its beautiful gardens, municipal and royal parks worth visiting,
and a university capital with important cultural centres, excellent shopping
facilities, remarkable events of both national and international importance.
The Schuetzenfest every summer rivals Munich's Oktoberfest. Since 1947
Hannover has been the city of trade fairs. At first glance, Hannover seems easy to grasp. However, there are quite a few quarters worth a closer look, i.e. the surviving buildings from the time of the monarchy, the idyllic green areas where you can relax and enjoy nature, and the culturally diverse quarters which are delightful to explore. The nightlife of Hannover is also rich and diverse. Travel: Langenhagen Airport, railway hub, autobahn hub. _________Sights Edit This The Old Town Hall The Old Town Hall The city of Hannover is literally packed with sights. Ranging from the Old and the New Town Hall to the amazing number of Castles and Churches on such a small surface, not to forget about the largest city forest of Europe. The idea of the museum is the dialog between opening and closing, between the public and the atmosphere of art. With its characteristic openness the museum has in the meantime become a place of meeting and communication. A generous donation made this museum possible. In 1968 Dr. Bernhard Sprengel gave his extensive collection of modern art to the city of Hannover and donated a considerable sum of money for the construction of the museum. The 112 hectares of this recreational forest are inhabited by a large number of wild animals, making it one of Hannover's most popular attractions. From the beginning it was not the production of wood, but hunting and the beauty of the wild animals and the forest that stood in the foreground. The Tiergarten was created in 1678/79 by Duke Johan Friedrich for hunting. 120 fallow deer were let free in the forest. This is approximately the number living there today. It covers an area of 650 hectares in the middle of the city, which makes it unique in the whole of Europe. Accordingly, the citizens of Hannover are very proud of "their" Eilenriede. The privilege to use and cultivate the Eilenriede as their possession, granted in 1371 by the dukes Wenzeslaus and Albrecht of Sachsen, is the foundation of its development. It's size and grand architectural style make it look more "historical", like a relict from more majestic times, when Hannover used to be a kingdom. The townhall itself was, however, ceremonially opened on 20 June 1913, after twelve years building time. "And it is all paid in cash, your Majesty", as the then mayor of Hannover, Heinrich Tramm , proudly announced to the emperor Wilhelm II, present at the opening ceremony. It was first mentioned in the documents of the Dukes of Schaumburg in 1224. It was not very prosperous, but managed to enlarge its possessions in the 14th century to make ends meet. After the Reformation, Wennigsen became a Protestant convent. The village and convent of Wennigsen suffered bady in the Thirty Years War. The 700-year-old framework town offers modern life besides picturesque facades. If you visit the city, you should not forget, apart from a stroll through the old town, to visit the Celler Herrenschloss, the building of which started in 1527. The renaissance building, surrounded by ditches, formerly was the centre and the nucleus of Celle. Inside, you can find the Schlosstheater; built 1695, it is the oldest preserved theatre in Germany. Marktkirche Edit This The marketplace was at the very centre of urban expansion in Hannover. Merchants and craftsmen used to live around here. In the 14th century, the Marktkirche ("The Church at the Marketplace") was built here. Together with the Old Town Hall to the right they are considered to be the southernmost specimens of the "North German neo-Gothic" style. Just as the tower reached half of its planned height, the construction had to be stopped due to shortages in the town's coffers. Unchanged in style, the Marktkirche was rebuilt in 1952. One of them crossed the river in a shallow ford close by. The small settlement of the ferry and fishermen developed into a town under the protection of the Dukes of Roden who had a castle built on the opposite side of the river. The Dukes of Roden sold the prospering town to the Welfen. In 1241 Duke Otto granted the town the rights of a borough. This certificate is the oldest document of Hannover's history. At that time, Hannover was already a thriving community of confident traders and craftsmen. In the 14th century the city was fortified with a solid city wall. There were three gates in the wall: the Leintor, Aegidientor and Steintor. Three gothic churches were built in the same century, Aegidienkirche, Marktkirche and Kreuzkirche. A hundred years later the old town hall was built next to Marktkirche also in the common brickwork style of northern Germany. For a few centuries little changed in the life of Hannover. Then in 1636 in the Thirty Years War the Duke of Calenberg decided that it was better to live in a well-fortified city and made Hannover his residence. The old monastery by the river was converted into the duke's castle. On the other side of the river a new part of the town was built to house all the people who worked for the court. It was called "Calenberger Neustadt". In 1714 the duke left Hannover to became King of England. And again - few changes occured during the time of the personal union with England. After the Seven Years War the embankments were pulled down and the city started growing again. In the place of the large embankments two boulevards were built, the Georgstraße and the Friedrichstraße (today Friedrichswall). In the 19th century, after the Napoleonic Age was over, Hannover became a kingdom and when the union with England was finished it had its own king, Ernst August, whose monument now stands in front of the Central Station. At that time G.F. Laves, a well-known architect of the time, worked in Hannover by appointment of the king. A lot of important buildings in Hannover are based on his plans, like the Leineschloß, the Castle of Herrenhausen (destroyed in the war), the opera house, Waterloo Square and the Central Station. Between the station and the old town the Ernst-August Stadt was built, new trades and companies were established there, so in the course the city centre moved from the old town to Ernst-August Stadt. In the 19th century the city really started growing. Villages on the fringe were incorporated, but industralization did not get going before 1866, when the Kingdom of Hannover was annexed by the Prussians. Before that the king did not want any smelly, dirty and noisy industry in his city. So Hannover's industrial develoment started in the village of Linden, which was incorporated into Hannover in 1920. After 1866, during the "Gründerzeit", Hannover's industry boomed. The Mittellandkanal and the motorway connected the growing city to the modern traffic network. The Second World War dealt a heavy blow to Hannover's economy. Almost two thirds of the buildings were destroyed or burnt out and a lot of people lost their homes. Also a large number of refugees from the East had to be accommodated. It was a hard life, but after 6.3 million cubic metres of rubble were removed, the rebuilding of Hannover began. ___________Getting Around Edit This x Suburban Railway: Hannover, like all mayor German cities, has extensive public transport system with trams busses and metro lines. They make it very easy to reach most destinations within the city and it’s surroundings without the trouble of having to find and pay for parking places The suburban railway system was finished just before the 2000 World expo so it now is one of the most modern in Europe. Small, but beautiful - in an ordinary residential building in the Friesenstraße you find a highlight of Hannover's bar scene. The owner used to work as an interior designer - you got it? He really had his fling here. With a lot of care for details and decoration - it's just unbeatable. In this Mexican atmosphere you can sit, listen to folklore and sip one of the seventy cocktails you can find in the list of beverages. And if further wishes more.. type: Bars & Pubs World66 rating: [rate it] address: Friesenstraße 52, 30161 Hannover tel: +49-0511/ 394 60 80 openings: Mo-Thu 19:30-1, Fr-Su 20-? Sempre Edit This x A bar? A cafe? Or a cocktailbar? What is it then? The answer is: a little bit of everything. "Sempre" means "always". The name stands for the idea of the Sempre. Any time of day the guest can expect culinaric delicacies, taken by the word well late into the night. The interior was designed by Italian designer Duccio Ducci: He played with colours, shapes and materials in a very unconventional way. But he was not allowed to alter the facade, because the building is a historic monument. The guest love the Italian cuisine, but also cocktails are "sempre" popular. In Sempre one more.. type: Bars & Pubs World66 rating: [rate it] address: Karmarschstraße 50, 30159 Hannover tel: +49-0511/ 306 80 80-1 openings: Mo-Su from 8h Spaghetti-Palast Edit This x As the name tells you: The Spaghett Palast's attraction is the large variety of pasta (and pizza). But not only the friend of Italian cuisine like it in Spaghett Palast. At an American bar on the ground floor in its classical style you can meet your friend for a nice drink. There is a large selection of international draught and bottled beers, but the barkeeper will be pleased to mix a cocktail for you, not only during "Happy" and "Blue Hour". As the Spaghett Palast is very centrally situated, it is rather busy here , especially when the shops close in the evening. Be it as the starting point for expeditions through the nearby clubs or for the "last for the road" - nobody can avoid the "Tex". With a large selection of 250 cocktails, the most popular being the Margheritas and Caipirinhas, there is a large colourful crowd of guests to be found in the three-storey- bar. The upper floor decorated with a large aztec figure offers good seating facilities. There you can sit, sip your cocktails and enjoy a Mexican snack. Palm leafs, straw mats and as a gag oil barrels which serve as tables spread the flair of Southern Islands and give you the feeling of holidays. Reggae and steel drum sounds in the background make you want a cool drink - so ask for a cocktail or a bottle of Mexican beer. Sometimes especially after cinema in the neary Cinemaxx the place gets really busy and the bar keeper is on the verge of rotating. But he'll manage with Carribean coolness, because the daily routine and rat race has to be kept out! It's where the beautiful and the in-people of the town meet, mainly in the early hours of the morning to dance into the brand new day. The DJs have a colouful mix of music from House to the charts and care for a good party atmosphere. And when the first rays of early morning sunshine peak through the large windows the bar keepers are still happily handling their shakers and creating cocktails for the still thirsty guests. One thing everybody knows is that it's the very place to go. Therefore you need a club card - to get hold of the masses of youngsters. Happy are those who've got the card! The "Zino" is especially popular with the "Thirty-Somethings". Roman columns, a lot of marble and a well-wipes bar seem rather cool at first, but the atmosphere is certainly different at party time every night. People go on celebrating all night. But there was no success. Meanwhile Ferry Foulandian, a character of Hannover's bar scene has seen to it and changed the Victor's into a restaurant with french cuisine and a bar. Candle light creates a warm atmosphere and Ferry cares for even small details like ash trays and candle holders. The guest is the "king" and service is everthing. Very convenient: when you feel like dacing after the meal you can do it here. Those who have managed to get past the doormen (no trainers please!) find themselves in an old vault. The small dancing area, surrounded by mirrors, is the place for the in-people who like the latest and hottest House trends. Two bars offer refreshments like classical cocktails and long drinks and also drinks to cheer you up: cocktails based on energy drinks. They keep you fit! Although this part of the town is not really one of the first addresses - the "Nordstadt" with the notorious Sprengel grounds and memories of "chaos days" - the Lunablu is something special. There are delicious snacks and international dishes on the menu, which taste even better when eaten outside on the terrace. But it's also rather nice inside. Guide Hanover Travel Guide and Hanover Travel Information - TravelPuppy.com Hanover may have been a bit of late starter, with the city not founded until the 12th century and not coming to prominence until the 17th, but it has more than made up for lost time and today it is one of Germany’s richest cities. The story starts back in the days of the Hanseatic League, when this north German city used its proximity to the Baltic Sea to emerge as a serious economic player. The golden age came in the 17th century, when a complex interweaving of marriages and political machinations in England, to avoid a Scottish Catholic monarch taking the throne, resulted in Hanover’s royalty holding sway of Britain. Hanoverian George I became the British king, despite the fact that he could not speak English and chose to spend much of his time holed up back in his native city. By the 20th century, the British royal connection had been long since cut and British bombers returned in World War II, to mete out a severe beating – over 80per cent of the city centre was flattened. Today, a painstaking reconstruction programme, somewhat ironically instigated by the occupying Allied forces in the post-war years, has brought back a sense of grandeur, although there are few of the fine architectural set pieces that grace many other German cities. What Hanover does have, however, are first rate shopping opportunities, excellent examples of Hanseatic red-brick churches, a brace of interesting museums, a sprinkling of atmospheric beer halls and a string of relaxing civic parks – the highlight of which is the Herrenhäuser Gärten, a fittingly grandiose and expansive legacy of its days as a royal city. The city is well geared toward tourists and visiting businessmen alike, with an array of hotels, an integrated public transport system and the ‘Red Thread’ – a 4-kilometre (3 -mile) red line that traces the way to most of Hanover’s main attractions, with an informative handbook on sale to fill in the blanks. The city’s economy is dominated by the Messegelände to the southeast, Germany’s largest, and one of Europe’s most high-tech, show and exhibition grounds, which hauls in millions of visitors every year, who attend the various business and leisure events. This vast area was also home to Expo 2000, the first World Expo ever to be held on German soil. Compared to Lisbon 1998, the Expo was an unmitigated disaster, with visitor numbers a fraction of those anticipated and a welter of negative publicity. But a few years further on, it appears that the local authorities may have been shrewd by attracting the massive state funding that went with the project. Hanover’s main railway station has been rejuvenated, the city was put firmly on the map and the Expo site has become a permanent asset, as well as another potential conference venue. The Expo site, like the rest of Hanover, is at its best in the summer months, when the city can see as much as seven hours of sunshine per day, with an average temperature of 21ºC. Nevertheless, this drops to as little as one hour of sunshine in the depths of winter and a chilly average temperature of only 3ºC but perfect weather for seeking refuge in the beer halls and cosy restaurants. |
