Terraces at Poelestraat in spring

HollandTraveler
Groningen-city is the northernmost big city of the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province that's also called Groningen. You'll find quite a charming city here, although the historic centre area was rather scarred both in the second World War and in the various rebuilding processes that followed.

The Grote Markt is the dazzling heart of the centre area. Nowhere in town you'll find so many pavement terraces, inviting you for a drink and a pleasant chat from early spring to late autumn. The Martini Church, with its famous Martinitower, dates from the 12th century but most of what you see now is from the 16th century. Another big attraction in Groningen is the Groningen Museum (by Mendini), a spectacular example of modern architecture with a fine collection of 17th century paintings.

One of the best things of Groningen is its nightlife. The city being an important university town, the many Dutch and international students guarantee that there is always something going on. And you'll find lots of pubs, cafes and small (student) restaurants in the centre area. Check out [Eating Out] and [Bars & Cafes].

Groningen is also a host for several festivals for music, art, film and theatre, like Noorderzon, Noorderslag, Eurosonic, International Film Festival Rotterdam in Groningen, Atelierroute and Swingin' Groningen.

This large cafe is split up into 12 smaller cafes and dancing areas, every area has its own name. All of these areas are interconnected. When here for the first time, it’s like a labyrinth. In ‘The 3 Gezusters’, for every different person there's a place he or she will like. Some of the cafes are small and cozy but other places are crowded and noisy. There are also 4 dancing areas more..

cosiest cafe in Groningen!!

This attractive watering hole furnished in tropical style is more and more known for its "skihut" music with all kind of additional bells and whistles.... On Thursdays and Saturdays you may find it a bit difficult to move around in the masses, but this is of course part of the positive ambiance. Tip: There is a nice, more or less "hidden", small bar somewhere at the back of the cafe... try to find it, it's very cosy.

Below the first floor of the ‘3 Gezusters’ is another small cafe: De Tapperij. This cafe is very popular with local students. Throug the cafe is a narrow path, so when it’s crowded it’s difficult to have a undisturbed drink. But when you can get a place at the bar you will have a pleasant night. Feestcafé Shooters
Edit This

‘Feestcafé Shooters’ is a small but enjoyable party cafe. When you come in you have to climb a dangerously steep stair. But it's worth it because when you are upstairs you'll have a lot of fun. The music is a variety of 70's, 80’s and 90’s (Dutch) party music (skihut music) up to the most recent music. The barmen are all boys and they do show’s on the bar to enjoy everybody. It’s a small (dancing) cafe but one of the largest for fun in Groningen.

___________Bars and Cafes
Edit This
i

At the Grote Markt, in the Peperstraat/Poelestraat, in the Zwanestraat/Kromme Elleboog and somewhat out of the center area, at the Gedempte Zuiderdiep and Kattendiep (across the street where the Casino is located), you'll find lots of pubs and cafes.
Below is a listing of suggestions. Main night to go out: Thursday night (Friday night is another option).

Groningen is known, also in the rest of the country, to be a haven for women wanting to go out on their own: they can go and drink a coffee or a beer single-handedly without so much as being bothered by men or the specific looks.

When you visit Groningen, you should check Rumba in the Poelestraat 20, known for it's latin music, cocktails and beautiful & trendy people. Very good Caipirinha's. Most of the international students pop in here, especially during happy hours on monday, tuesday and wednesday. It's so popular there's a waiting line in the weekends, so try to be there before 00.00.....& dress to impress

Rumba Cafe - Lounge & Club

Latin vibes here! In my opinion the coolest place in Groningen. The place has two stories and has just been expanded. Downstairs you'll find the dancefloor and huge cocktail bar, upstairs there's the lounge & V.I.P. room, champagne, fine cocktails & cigar room. In the summer they have a super terrace at the back with lounge chairs & hammocks! Great interior & furniture. Great ambiance, music and cool people. Tight security, dress well to enter in weekends. Must visit !!
