| Gioia Tauro Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see gioia tauro - piano delle fosse - scala gioia tauro - piano delle fosse - scala micheal castaldo - AkA MC Cell Gioia Tauro (Metauros – formally a Greek city during the Magna Graecia era) is a growing village by the sea in the province of Reggio Calabria. Gioia Tauro is located between Naples and Palermo, the next closest town is Palmi which is 7 Km due south. Palmi was "discovered" at the turn of the century by the English aristocracy and today is considered the "jewel" of the Costa Viola for its trendy shopping and sandy beaches. Gioia Tauro is located in the gulf of Gioia, (it holds the second largest port in Europe… after Rotterdam). On a clear day, you can see Sicily and the Aeolian islands AKA Lipari Islands, from the Costa Viola. The “Cittadella” is the oldest part of Gioia Tauro where you can find St. Antonio’s Church and several baroque style buildings with beautiful portals; you can see the ruins of the necropolis in the “contrada Petra” (Petra’s Quarter) and the ruins of a roman villa. In Gioia Tauro Marina along the lungo mare is the century old Gaslini citrus plant. ________History Edit This Gioia Tauro - Viale Don Struzo Gioia Tauro - Viale Don Struzo micheal castaldo - AkA MC Cell Gioia Tauro is not a fad; Like mythological cities of the past, it does not let go of those who see it. Its sea, its shores, its history, its inhabitants form a whole, influencing travelers and rendering their life experience… utterly blissful. For the traveler that yearns for the off the beaten path of the unexplored village, we believe Gioia Tauro represents much of what is valuable about this region of Calabria. Kind people, wonderful food, and the vast history that lies dormant in its tiny twisting streets. Once the hot summer months of July & August pass, with northern Italian vacationers long gone, it gladly returns to it's more quiet nature...although the Gioia Tauro Porto never let’s things remain too quiet. The Porto actually has kept Gioia Tauro thriving. They have a wonderful relationship with the Porto and we believe it keeps their civic leaders fresh and enthusiastic. The Gioia Tauro Porto also brings a lot of $$ to the town that no doubt brings many improvements to the town. However, improvements in Calabria can be very slow…which explains the reason why it’s the final frontier of Italian tourism. Exceptional beauty, no, Gioia Tauro doesn't really hold a candle to many more picturesque towns. But it does have a certain “presence”. Our love of Gioia Tauro lies in it's people and yet these wonderful Calabrian qualities can be found in numerous places...one just needs to slow down and let life happen...Open your own door, rather that running past all the closed ones on your way to the next museum. Gioia Tauro is not only a town by the sea, but a way of life, a love. Gioia Tauro charms anyone who goes there with the color of its sea, the greens of its shores and the warmth of its inhabitants. It is a place that has a miraculously positive and uplifting effect on those who are struggling with the constant demands of everyday life. From artists to businessmen, Italians to Americans, Germans and other Europeans, this Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean part of Italy is for not for ‘everyone’ but for those who come from cold, or warm lands… all have undergone an invigorating metamorphosis when staying … in Gioia Tauro. It is 2 km in from A3 - the major Autostrada from Salerno to Reggio. It’s 7 km distant from SS106 the other major roadway that cuts through the Aspromonte mountains and connects the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts in less than 35 minutes.
