| Georgia Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see i Georgia is an old state in the Caucasus, with a beautiful coast, great mountain scenery and towns. Due to civil problems following independence after the break up of the Soviet Union, Georgia has suffered a lot. The infrastructure has taken a severe blow; parts of the "Georgian Riviera" are hard to access as a result. Still, Georgia makes a great destination for the resourceful traveler. Since Georgia claims to be the oldest Christian nation, there are many impressive churches and cathedrals dating back to a time when most of Western Europe was still pagan. The capital Tbilisi and nearby Mtskheta are nice cities with many important monuments. The Gelati Monastery is unique in its kind. In Vardzia you will also find interesting examples of Christian art. Set at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Georgia 's fabulous variety of landscape and culture has attracted adventurers and traders from the dawn of time. Here the present coexists with the past, and modernity is fused with tradition. According to Greek legend Jason and his Argonauts came here in search of the Golden Fleece. Today, Georgia is a country strongly connected to tradition, at the same time as being a modern, democratic state embodying western values. Throughout the 20 th century, Georgia has been famous as a holiday destination - a combined Switzerland and Rivera - for citizens of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union . They came for high mountains, sunny beaches and a unique cuisine. With the fall of the Soviet Union, Georgia 's beauty is now open to any traveller thirsting for new sights, sounds, smells and an ancient and rich culture. From the shores of the Black Sea to the soaring peaks of the Caucasus - from rich vineyards in eastern Georgia to semi-arid deserts, Georgia 's natural beauty and extraordinary diversity makes a visit truly unique. In this small country travelers of all kinds can find what they seek and return home full of the most unforgettable impressions. Part or or all of this text stems from the original article at: www.tourism.gov.ge __________History Edit This i Georgian history dates back more than 2 500 years and Georgian is one of the oldest living languages in the world. Tbilisi located in a picturesque valley divided by the Mtkvari River is more than 1 500 years old. Much of Georgia's territory was besieged by its Persian and Turkish neighbors along with Arabs and Mongols over the course of the 7th to the 18th centuries. After 11 centuries of mixed fortunes of various Georgian kingdoms including a golden age from the 11th to 12th centuries Georgia turned to Russia for protection. Russia essentially annexed Georgia and exiled the royalty in 1801. Pockets of Georgian resistance to foreign rule continued and the first Republic of Georgia was established on May 26 1918 after the collapse of Tsarist Russia. By March 1921 the Red army had reoccupied the country and Georgia became part of the Soviet Union. On April 9 1991 the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia declared independence from the U.S.S.R. Beset by ethnic and civil strife from independence in 1991 Georgia began to stabilize in 1995. However more than 230 000 internally displaced persons present an enormous strain on local politics. Peace in the separatist areas of Abkhazia and south Ossetia overseen by Russian peacekeepers and international organizations will continue to be fragile requiring years of economic development and negotiation to overcome local enmities. Considerable progress has been made in negotiations on the Ossetian-Georgian conflict and negotiations are continuing in the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict. The Georgian Government is committed to economic reform in cooperation with the IMF and World Bank and stakes much of its future on the revival of the ancient Silk Road as the Eurasian corridor using Georgia's geography as a bridge for transit of goods between Europe and Asia. Georgians are renowned for their hospitality and artistry in dance theater music and design. _______Practical Information Edit This Hello in Georgian is "gamarjobat" Goodbye in Georgian is "nahxamdis" Thank you in Georgian is "gmadlobt" "I love you" in Georgian is "me shen mikvarxar" "How are you?" in Georgian is "rogor xar?" "Fine thank you" in Georgian is "gmadlobt kargad" "beautiful lady" _________Economy Edit This Georgia's economy has revolved around Black Sea tourism; cultivation of citrus fruits tea and grapes; mining of manganese and copper; and output of a small industrial sector producing wine metals machinery chemicals and textiles. The country imports the bulk of its energy needs including natural gas and oil products. Its only sizable internal energy resource is hydropower. Despite the severe damage the economy has suffered due to civil strife Georgia with the help of the IMF and World Bank has made substantial economic gains in 1995-97 increasing GDP growth and slashing inflation. Georgia still suffers from energy shortages although energy deliveries are steadily improving. Georgia is pinning its hopes for long- term recovery on the development of an international transportation corridor through the key Black Sea ports of P'ot'i and Bat'umi. The construction of a Caspian oil pipeline through Georgia—scheduled to open in early 1999—should spur greater western investment in the economy. A growing trade deficit continuing problems with corruption and political uncertainties cloud the short-term economic picture. It grows a lot of crops. _____________People Edit This Boy from Sachkhere Boy from Sachkhere Christine Palowitch Population: 5 108 527 (July 1998 est.) It's a pleasant city with a good but stony beach. The center is quite small and can be covered on foot. There are no real monuments, but quite a few houses that are worth a look; they mostly date back to the 19-th century when Batumi was an important border town in the Russian defence against the Turks. The Russian orthodox cathedral unfortunately hasn't made it to present day. In the communist days it has been replaced by the Intourist hotel. The Gelati Monastery , once a major centre of enlightenment in Georgia for many long centuries, was a repository of many outstanding monuments of art, and still is even today. The monastery was founded by King David the Builder in 1106. As a result of the progressive policy he pursued as well as a favourable international situation, Georgia became a powerful feudal monarchal state which subordinated neighbouring countries to its influence and sought to play a leading role among all those of the Near East. Wishing to establish in his homeland a center of enlightenment which would be in no way inferior to any of the renowned hearts of culture in Byzantium or in cuontries of the Near East, King David the Builder founded an academy at the Gelati Monastery and invited to teach there the most outstanding Georgian theologians, philosophers and doctors of law, many of whom had previously been active at various monasteries abroad or at the Mangan Academy in Constantinople. Mosaic presenting the Virgin with Archangels (1125-1130) About 200 metres north-west of the Gelati ensemble, lie the ruins called Sokhasteri (hermits' dwelling place). The cleaning and research carried out on this spot showed that once a hospital was sited there and, according to the chronicle, David the Builder had erected it and personally supervised the care of the patients. Portrait of King David the Builder with a model of the Cathedral in his hand (16th cent) The Gelati Monastery has preserved a great number of murals dating back to the 12th-18th centuries. They adorn both the main Cathedral consecrated to the Nativity of the Virgin and the Church of St. George. The murals in the main structure combine two kinds of monumental medium-mosaic and frasco. The mosaic occupies a small yet the most important place in the overall mural, while the rest is done in fresco technique. The latest renovations were done in oils in the 19th century. Apostles and the Church Fathers(13th cent) However, the refined "psychological" type, common for Byzantine and Georgian art alike, reveals certain features, sometimes very subtle, typical of the local national type. Apostles Receiving the Eucharist (16th cent) The murals of the late 12th century and early 13th, which without doubt once adorned the Gelati Monastery (specifically the Church of St. George), have not survived. Today the second chronological layer of the Gelati murals is represented by the 13th-century frescos (c. 1291-1293) that adorn the east compartment of the main Cathedral's south chapel. In its time the chapel served as the burial vault of King David VI (Narin), the son of Rusudan. Our Lady's Day (16th cent) This mural is notable for its highly developed paleologue style which is quite unexpected for work done at the end of the 13th century. The third chronological layer of the Gelati murals is represented by surviving fragments in the south chapel. Judging by the portrait of King Bagrat V, they date from the last quarter of the 14th century St. Constantine and St. Helen (16th cent) Frescos of the 14th century have also been preserved in a few other parts of the Cathedral. The portrait of Bagrat V is the last of the surviving representations of kings of a united Georgia. All the portraits of later dates show kings of West Georgia, i.e. sovereigns of Imeretia Fresco (16th cent) The next chronological layer is represented by a double portrait exposed recently from beneath a 16th-century mural in the central part of the north chapel. The Nativity (17th cent) In 1510, following a surprise attack on West Georgia, the Turks seized Kutaisi, looting and burning the Gelati Monastery. It is supposed that the ancient burial vaults of the Georgian kings were ravaged. The murals, without doubt, might also have suffered from a fire. The Entry into Ierusalem (17th cent) At any rate, it is quite obvious that the murals in the central part of the main Cathedral, as well as those in the Church of St. George, suffered most, for they were all painted over in the 16th century. The Descent of the Holy Spirit (17th cent) The paintings in the Cathedral cupola were executed by an artist named Tevdore, apparently in the 17th century. Until recent times the gelati Monastery housed ancient manuscripts and unique examples of embossed precious metal. The Ascension (17th cent) Some of the latter are embellished with enamel as, for instance, the superb casing for the Khakhuli icon made in the second half of the 12th century. This icon had been moved to Gelati from the Khakhuli Monastery. In Gelati a casing was made for it, the central part being of gold, and the lateral wings of silver gilt. The inscription on the icon mentions King David the Builder and his son Demetre. ::::::::::::Gonio Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Kvariati Kvariati Nika, EXOTOUR Located just a few kilometers south of Batumi, Gonio has one sight worth visiting, the old Roman Byzantine fort - Gonio-Apsaros. It turned out to be impossible to get the robe off the dead woman, so they burried her with the robe. From the grave a tree sprung. Later, when builders tried to cut the tree, it would not fall. Saint Nino to whom the oldest church here is dedicated, prayed and the tree was healed again. Not only that, a healing oil started to flow from the tree.
