Jeepney, Church, Rainbow and mountain

Conrad Stevens
Consisting of 7,107 islands (1,000 inhabited), 97 ethnic groups and 101 dialects/languages, the Philippines is known as "The Smile of Asia", due to its people's hospitality and many festivities or 'fiestas'. Spanish and American influences are strongly evident in its culture. Many tourists have described it as 'a slice of Latin America in Asia', or 'the most westernized Asian country'. Stop by and you will never know a more hospitable and friendly place to vacation.

The archipelago is famous for the contrast between huge and modern metropolis like Manila or Cebu, the primitive tribal territories, the deserted islands, the clear sea waters and the smooth white coral sand.

The Philippines is a nice and friendly place to visit. The people speak English, as it is an official language.

The capital city Manila is noisy, gritty, and tough--yet very charming, cosmopolitan, vibrant and exciting (very New York City). Malling is a favorite Philippine pastime as many shopping centers dot the metropolis. The old seedy image of Manila nightlife has been replaced with classy restaurants, quaint hole-in-the-wall yet must-see spots, "it" bars, and cozy cafes (very strong cafe culture in the past few years, a night out or "gimmick" usually ends with a coffee nightcap at Figaro, Coffee Bean, Segafredo or the ubiquitous Starbucks). As in most major cities, urban poverty is evident in Manila with its shanties and streetchildren.

Be sure to visit Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines. A long yet smooth 6-7 hour drive from Manila, Baguio boasts of a cool climate (peculiar in the Philippines as it is a tropical country), a lot of sights to visit (Mines View Park, Baguio Botanical Gardens, just to name a few) and lots of stuffs to buy (silvercrafts, plants -- that don't live beyond Baguio's cool confines -- vintage clothes, handicrafts, among others)

You can't visit the Philippines without visiting the beach. Whether it's the wild (and slightly seedy) beaches of Puerto Galera, exotic Amanpulo and El Nido in Palawan, relaxing Bohol, Sajorda River Park in Iba, Zambales and its coastal white fine sand & crystal clear water or the place-to-be Boracay, the Philippines has a beach that suits your budget, style, and personality. Because of the extensive road network and cheap airline fares, going to these places is fairly easy.

As what they say about the Philippines, "If you dont like Boracay island, you still have 7,107 left to choose from".

History

The history of the Philippines may be divided into four distinct phases: the pre-Spanish period (before 1521); the Spanish period (1521-1898); the American period (1898-1946); and the years since independence (1946-present).

Pre-Spanish Period

The first people in the Philippines the Negritos are believed to have come to the islands 30 000 years ago from Borneo and Sumatra making their way across then-existing land bridges. Subsequently people of Malay stock came from the south in successive waves the earliest by land bridges and later in boats called barangays. The Malays settled in scattered communities also called barangays which were ruled by chieftains known as datus. Chinese merchants and traders arrived and settled in the ninth century A.D. In the 14th century Arabs arrived introducing Islam in the south and extending some influence even into Luzon. The Malays however remained the dominant group until the Spanish arrived in the 16th century.

Spanish Period

Ferdinand Magellan, a portuguese, claimed the Philippines for Spain in 1521 and for the next 377 years the islands were under Spanish rule. This period was the era of conversion to Roman Catholicism. A Spanish colonial social system was developed complete with a strong centralized government and considerable clerical influence. The Filipinos were restive under the Spanish and this long period was marked by numerous uprisings. The most important of these began in 1896 under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo and continued until the Americans defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay on May 1 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain on June 12 1898.

____________Getting Around

Asia's First Airline

Asia's First Airline
The Philippines' national airline is Philippine Airlines (PR).

Take Note but THINK POSITIVE

The period over Easter from Good Friday to the following Bank holiday (and sometimes beyond) as are major holiday in the Philippines as is Christmas and New Year. There may be some difficulty booking a flight during these periods. But I always have told our guests NEVER pay any attention to an airlines' reply "Sorry We're fully Booked" Since there are several airlines available you can check with more than one . And you can buy a ticket with the next departing flight, get a "chance passenger number" and if you don't get on the first flight to a popular destintion you WILL get on the second flight. Also you can refund that ticket if you do not get on, walk a few steps to the next airline office and try again. Think Positive and Smile! Don't Worry Be Happy!

Approximate flight times

From Manila to London is 14 hours 25 minutes; to Paris is 13 hours 20 minutes; to Los Angeles is 11 hours 25 minutes; to New York is 14 hours 30 minutes; to Singapore is 3 hours; to Hong Kong is 1 hour 40 minutes; to Bangkok is 2 hours 35 minutes; to Tokyo is 5 hours 15 minutes and to Sydney is 8 hours.

International airports

Ninoy Aquino (MNL) is 10km (6 miles) south of Rizal Park and the center of Manila. Airport facilities include banks, post office, medical clinic, baggage deposit area, duty-free shops and car hire. Taxi services are available to the city (travel time – 30 minutes or more because of traffic). Bill and Lorna's Townhouse Hotel Manila is 2-1/2 km (1-1/2 miles ) from the airports and offers a airport pickup service from 6AM to 6PM , Monday to Saturday.

Mactan International Airport (NOP) (Cebu Island) is 45km (28 miles) from the city centre. Hotels and tour operators provide their own coaches; taxis can be hired.

Departure tax

P500 for international departures. Anyone who overstays their 21 day arrival permit up to 59 days total can pay U$50 upon departure. Proceed to the left side of the immigration booths, look for the booth just behind which has "Cashier" sign, pay there and you'll be given a receipt. Often it's faster than waiting in line. Children under two years of age and transit passengers are exempt.

Sea

Manila is a major seaport a crossroads of trade in the Asia-Pacific region. Shipping lines which call at Manila include American President Lines Anline Ben Line Container Ltd Everett Lines Hapag-Lloyd 'K' Line Knutsen Line Lykes Orient Line Orient Overseas Container Line Scandutch Sealand United States Line and the Waterman Line. Schedules and rates are listed in the shipping pages of daily newspapers. Very few people arrive in the Philippines by sea but traveling around the islands once you have arrived is a great experience. It is possible now to take a ship once a week from Davaoin Mindanao to a port near Manado in Sulwesi, Indonesia. Occasionally ships travel between Zamboanga and Sabah, Malaysia but no dependable schedule is available.

Island Hopping By Ship

Passenger shipping in the Philippines has improved drastically in the past three years and I'd recommend it to people with plenty of time or with low travel budgets. All of the ships arrive and depart from Manila's North Harbor from Pier 2 to Pier 14. WG&A Passenger Lines formerly three family owned lines, William, Gothong and Aboitiz has combined to provide best and the largest fleet, known as the SuperFerry and maintains a website with schedules and prices. Another is Ramblon Lines at Pier 8 going to Boracay Island with departs Monday and Friday at 5PM.In the Manila Bulletin newspaper is a list of ships' departure. Most destinations by ship take from 14 to 24 hours after departing Manila. The price range starts with economy at an average of U$10 to US15, to tourist class at U$12 to U$18 and cabin class (4 to 6 beds) at U$18 to U$30 to most island towns. At some places in the islands are Banca, large, local outriggers which ferry passengers short distances like between Roxas on Mindoro Island to Boracay Island ( 6 hours)and from Coron in northern Palawan to El Nido (8 to 10 hours)

Ground Transport-Bus, Jeepney and Renting Cars

Jeepneys are unique to the Philippines so you shouldn't leave the Philippines without using them usually for short distance around a city. Often Jeepneys are used in place of buses in the provinces. In Metro-Manila the fare starts at P4 to P6+ but usually follow the most congested routes with traffic moving at a snail's pace. Take Care when riding jeepneys in Manila or the larger cities not to wear gold chain necklaces or bracelets which are the most common "grab and run" targets for petty thieves. Bus travel in the Philippines is very cheap and usually quite comfortable with fares of 60 to 70 U$ cents, 1DM, or P30 / hour. So a 5 hour trip would cost U$3+. Driving in an undeveloped country is a real challenge for most people from Europe, the States, or any developed country so I would not recommend it unless you have experience. Renting late model Japanese cars are best done by the week since often there's a one day discount so cost U$250 / week.

Asean Airpass

6 Asian companies have joined forces in an effort to turn off crisis in tourism industry, and they are now offering an "Asian Airpass". Companies participating include Thai Airways,Garuda, Singapore Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Philippine Airways and Malaysian. The deal is the following: You have to fly from your home to any Asian destination with one of the carriers. You could f.i. fly to Singapore or Bangkok.

You need to buy the pass at home for 270 US$. This entitles you to 3 flights within Asia with one of these carriers. This pass has to be bought at the same time you purchase your international flight, and it has to be booked outside Asean countries. Open jaws are not permitted, except within 1 country. So travel must be contiguous.

Domestic flights are permitted except in Vietnam and the Philippines.

Maximum stay is two months.

Extra flights can be purchased at 90 US$ for one.

You cannot do the same trip twice (f.i. Singapore-BKK-Singapore-BKK)!!

Domestic Flights Under U$50

Most domestic flights in the Philippines cost between U$35 to U$50 one way and can be purchased from any one of the several airlines, all with offices walking distance from the Manila domestic airport. They include: Air Philippines, Asian Spirit, Cebu Pacific, Pacific Air (small planes) Philippine Airlines (now with their own terminal for both domestic and international flights ), SeAir, Soriano Air( only one beyond walking distance at a private terminal)and Star Asia.Sometimes, Philippine Airlines offer specials which include several flights.

________Economy

Economy—overview: In 1997 the Philippine economy primarily a mixture of agriculture and light industry continued its fifth year of positive economic growth led by expansion of exports and investment. The government expects growth to slow to about 3% in 1998 due to spillover effects of the financial crisis in East Asia. The government has promised to continue its economic reforms to help the Philippines match the pace of development in the newly industrialized countries of East Asia. The strategy includes improving infrastructure overhauling the tax system to bolster government revenues and moving toward further deregulation and privatization of the economy.

Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Most persons who acquire acute HCV infection either have no symptoms or have a mild clinical illness. However, chronic HCV infection develops in 75%–85% of those acutely infected, with active liver disease developing in 60%–70% of chronically infected persons.

Malaria in humans is caused by one of five protozoan species of the genus Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, or P. malariae. People of the Philippines

How best to describe some of the warmest, friendly and informal people in the world? As with most predominantly Roman Catholic cultures religious traditions and customs help define the daily lives of the people, family values and their view of the world. Since arriving in the Philippines in 1980 I have felt more comfortable and at "home" than any of the more than 20 countries I have visited. My warm feeling is a direct result of the happy go lucky, easy going Filipino people all over the islands. Though over 70 language dialects, three major island regions and many of the 77 provinces lacking infrastructure help to divide Filipinos in many ways one thing they share is their love of life shown by their smiles and sense of humor. Three million Filipinos have emmigrated or work a large part of their lives outside the country but their great talent with learning and speaking different languages help make them disappear and be absorbed into every country they have gone. The many overseas Chinese worldwide also the Koreans and Japanese in North America are easiliy recognized living together in areas referred to as Chinatown, Koreatown or Japantown and introducing their cuisine wherever they go. Since the Philippines is such a "melting pot," Filipinos often are identified as Asians and/or Pacific Islanders; however, it truly depends on who you are asking. Living in the Philippines through the years I have experienced many emotions regarding the Filipino people, concerning both their strengths and their weaknesses. It took moving back to my own country before my view of Filipinos seasoned and matured with age and distance. I love and appreciate the Filipino people more than my own and will always consider it "home".

They live for TODAY, work to live, NEVER live to work as in many developed countries, take care of their elderly personally and as they struggle with incredible poverty remain good natured finding the simple joys of life enough to smile. So when visiting the Philippines, do as they they do SMILE, it's a beautiful life. DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY! Below are some statistics for those of you interested.

Population: 77 725 862 (July 1998 est.)

Age structure:

0-14 years: 38% (male 14 867 972; female 14 379 722)

15-64 years: 59% (male 22 582 178; female 23 136 055)

65 years and over: 3% (male 1 232 813; female 1 527 122) (July 1998 est.)

Almost half of the Philippine population is under 25 years old.

Population growth rate: 2.09% (1998 est.)

Population statistics gathered in the Philippines and other undeveloped countries could be disputed for several reasons. One reason is the lack of computer recorded births and deaths with many still giving birth outside hospitals. I have read about incredible population growth predicted to reach 100 million by 2020! I know that among most of the Filipino men in the provinces that I have encountered they refer to the term "family planning" by saying "family planting" followed by laughter.

Birth rate: 28.43 births/1 000 population (1998 est.)

Death rate: 6.52 deaths/1 000 population (1998 est.)

Net migration rate: -1.04 migrant(s)/1 000 population (1998 est.)

Sex ratio:

at birth: 1.05 male(s)/female

15-64 years: 0.98 male(s)/female

65 years and over: 0.81 male(s)/female (1998 est.)

Aklan is said to be the oldest province in the Philippines, organized in 1213 by settlers from Borneo as the Minuro it Akean to include what is now the province of Capiz. It was inaugurated as an independent province on November 8, 1956.

Aklan encompasses the northeastern portion of Panay Island and nearby Boracay Island, both situated within the Visayas island group. Cadastrally located between 12 degrees N, 11 degrees and 19 minutes S and between 121 degrees and 50 minutes W, 122 degrees and 35 minutes E, the province is bordered by the Sulu Sea on the northwest, the Sibuyan Sea on the northeast and the east, by the Province of Antique on the west, and by the province of Capiz on the south.

Baguio City
One of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country, Baguio is made for sightseeing. And for strolls and boat rides and gentle trots around the park. And for golf. Kennon Road, completed in 1905, opened Baguio to tourism. The zigzagging path previews the scenic highlights of the city. Along the 32-kilometer highway are the Bridal Veil and Colorado waterfalls.

Synonymous with Baguio is Burnham Park. Located in the heart of the city, the park's features include a man-made lagoon ideal for boat rides, a skating rink, an athletic field and stadium, basketball and tennis courts, a biking zone, tree-and-flower lined promenades, and a plant market.

A popular golfing destination, the city takes pride in its Baguio Country Club and Camp John Hay. What used to be the rest-and-recreation base of American military personnel, the Camp is being transformed into a world-class resort and is also Baguio's biggest pine tree conservation area. Its newly refurbished 18-hole golf course rivals that of the Country Club which has pretty garden-patched cottages surrounding its fairways.

Boracay Island combines crystal clear waters, sugary beaches and lush landscapes into an idyllic tourist haven that is guaranteed to fascinate and lull visitors into tranquil harmony with its simplistic beauty. Travellers commonly refer to Boracay as a heart stomping, unbelievably magical Island in the middle of the Philippines. A paradise set in the South China Sea.

The small island, only seven kilometers long and one kilometer wide at its narrowest point, is located just off the northern tip of Panay Island. The northern and southern parts of the island rise with elevations of 100 meters above sea level. The Island has numerous scattered villages interconnected by a maze of intriguing jungle pathways.

Boracay boasts the world's finest beaches - a broad 3.5 kilometer stretch of sun-drenched sand, washed by perpetually turquoise-ish water, a nature worshipper's heaven on earth.

White Beach runs almost the entire length of the western side of the island. During the peak season (December till July) White Beach is ideal for day frolics in its warm water, to cool off from those sweaty summer's tropical heat. During this period the opposite, eastern side, forms the windward shore, with almost continuous onshore winds and protective reef that are ideal for both the Scuba divers and Surfers. The eastern shore also contains numerous shelter homes, rewarding the ardent student-backpackers with many great scenic spots.

The main beaches are dotted with water sports outlets, offering the latest equipment for rental and expert instruction at reasonable prices for Scuba Diving, Wind Surfing. Boracay is becoming Asia's most popular to-go area with good shallow coral dives and nightlife within easy reach.

For more leisurely pursuits, many local hotels and holiday resorts offer all-day around the island trips by motorized bangkas and paraws (native sailing boats), with stop-offs at the northern caves, near Yapak, home of Boracay's giant fruit bats, locally called "Flying Foxes" and the 'Kar-tir' Sea Shell Museum with Filipino shells on displays in Ilig-Iligan.

The island's center extends a natural invitation to hike or mountain bike its many trails, criss-crossing its gently hilly slopes, while offering occasional glimpses of far-off sandy coves, fringed by palm trees....really...it sounds so exciting, I could come in there right now.

Your hike could extend to Puka Shell Beach, located on the Island's northern tip, facing Carabao Island. Puka Beach is the home of Boracay's famous and at one time plentiful Puka shells.

At sunset, a walk along the length of White Beach attracts many early evening walkers, before the serenity of the ocean views are over-taken by the awakening of Boracay's night life, offering numerous economically priced restaurants, discos, and bars that add an international affair to the evening.

At the end of the day, watch the spectacular sunsets from the beachfront bars which offer expertly mixed tropical cocktails to titillate your early evening loins.

Boracay offers an ideal escape from civilised civilization, but if one needs to remain in contact with the rest of the world, international phone, fax and e-mail services are always available.

Boracay is on the brink of a worldwide epidemic, which within the next five years will probably convert its current tranquillity into the hub-bub of a major commercialized venues.

BUTUAN CITY GENERAL INFORMATION

BY Melfrank A. Lugod, Bit-os, Butuan

“In the beginning, there was no Philippines but there was BUTUAN”

Located at the Northeastern part of Agusan Valley sprawling across the Agusan River is Butuan City, known for its colorful history and culture. BUTUAN is a term believed to have originated from the sour fruit “Batuan”. Others opined, it came from a certain “Datu Buntuan”, a chieftain who once ruled Butuan. Scholars believed, it came from the word “But-an”, which literally means a person who has sound and discerning disposition. Whichever theories appear credible depends on the kind of people residing in Butuan, for whatever is said about them, Butuan continues to live on.
Butuan’s history, culture, arts and people date back to the 4th century as showcased in museums which makes Butuan an exciting source of cultural artifacts in Mindanao.

As early as the 10th century, according to the Chinese Song Shi (history), people from Butuan had already established trading relations with the kingdom of Champa in what is now South Vietnam.

By the 11th century, Butuan was the center of trade and commerce in the Philippines. The best evidence to prove this fact is the discovery of 9 balangays (The BUTUAN BOAT) and other archeological finds in the vicinities of Butuan City, particularly in Ambangan, Libertad near the old EL RIO de BUTUAN and MASAO River.

Welcome to a City that has seen over 1,683 years of recorded history! The original site of the First Easter Mass in Philippine Soil, here, the present nurtures the past and vice-versa. While the future waits promisingly in the wings. Come up close!

Brief History (Geography)

Butuan City was originally located in Pinamanculan by the banks of the Masao River, a kilometer away from barrio of Libertad. Finding the Place less ideal because of the Flood, the people moved to Baug, now the municipality of Magallanes, at the mouth of the Agusan River. They again transferred to Lapaca, now known as Linungsuan in Barrio Banza about five kilometers inland of Agusan River. Still troubled by floods, the people once more settled, this time in the present site of the city proper.

A description of Butuan is not complete without infusing it with the significance of the Agusan River and its tributaries that provide the valley with rich soil from periodic floods. Its serpentine route through the city and two Agusan provinces provided the people with easy means of transportation for trade and commerce encouraged settlement along its banks. The Agusan River greatly helped the booming of the “Logging Industry” which earned Butuan the name “Timber City of the South.”

Butuan City sprawls across the Agusan River nine kilometers from its mount. Towards this, to the north and seaward, run fertile Ricelands. Halfway around the city to the southwest, roll the gently sloping hills over Mount Mayapay. To the east, the majestic Hilong-Hilong and Diwata mountain ranges protect the entire valley from fierce Pacific storms.

It is very difficult to pinpoint the exact time when the name Butuan first emerged. Certainly, the name Agusan came into being upon the creation of the province in 1914. Before this, the entire area had been known as BUTUAN, as can be born out by old historical records.

Calbayog City is a 1st class city in the province of Samar, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 147,187 people.

The whole of Samar island has been cited by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) together with Palawan as a global 200 Eco-region. It is one of the 18 centers of plant diversity in the country, with 2,400 species of flowering plants including the rafflesia manillana, the second largest flower in the world.

Samar might not be a very popular tourist destination but for those who want to try the off-beaten track, the province, specifically Calbayog, might just be the place you're destined to be enjoying this summer. An overnight boat trip from Cebu, will bring travelers to the port of Calbayog early the following morning. One can also take a flight from Manila to Calbayog by availing of the Asian Spirit flights thrice weekly. By land buses, take the Philtranco bus from Manila enroute to Tacloban.

A few pension houses are available for accommodation. But if you are the tent and sleeping bag type, then you'll find lots of interesting spots to pitch that tent
:::::::::Caloocan Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see

Caloocan City is one of the 14 municipalities within Metro Manila, and located on the northern part.

I spent 6 months in Caloocan September '06 - March '07. I found it to be over-populated (as are most Metro Manila area cities), polluted in every way (ditto), and very poor.

No parks, no decent libraries (books in bookstores are as expensive as in the USA), simply crossing the street on foot is putting your life at risk.

Recreation consists of children playing in the street, blaring noise (sometimes 24/7), from horns, motorcycles and the Third World's all time favorite, Kareoke.

There is no privacy, even in an apartment you may rent. The neighbors will walk past and stare in your windows to see what you are doing and what you have inside.

Living is relatively cheap; rent, food, clothing, beer, cigarettes, transportation; because most people are so poor, the costs must remain low. Quality follows the cost of most things, as anyplace else. Most all products, if not imported from the west, come from SEAsia and are cheaply made and usually have little if any warranty because you will be lucky to get it home without it's breaking.

Most anyplace you go in Caloocan is crowded and you must be constantly watching for pickpocket/snatching attempts. You can identify where the jeepney and trike drivers hang out by the smell of urine. Urinating on a wall or sidewalk next to the street is common.

The people I met were all very friendly and helpful. One of the first questions I would usually get was "Why would you want to come to Caloocan?" My plan was to see if I could live in the Philippines on my retirement income, and to learn the transportation system, how to use the ATMs and where they were, what kinds of foods were available and some of the language. I did all this within a month and was ready to leave. My only drawback was I did not know anyone in the provinces to visit. Hotels and resorts are not cheap, especially if you look like a white foreigner, as I do.

There are two prices wherever you go there...one for the local native Filipino and one for the foreigner. In Filipinos eyes "all foreigners are rich". It is not unusual to be charged 3 times the local rate if you are deemed a foreigner.

I felt like I could live anywhere for 6 months, and it was true. But it would take a lot for me to return and stay anywhere in the Manila Metro area for 6 months. I'd be much more comfortable in a trailer home in Arkansas watching tv than Caloocan.

I make friends easily and made several while there. I miss them, but I do not miss the filth and air/water/noise pollution.

But even though it's this bad, there are other things which I'm sure will interest you in Caloocan. People are very courteous and polite. Not all people there are full of hatred. There are nice sights, nice buildings, nice natives, excellent food and best of all, great culture.

A small island off the northern tip of Mindanao. It has seven volcanoes, two hot springs and very nice caves (one is right off the national highway). There's also a nice little island offshore called White Island. It's one of my favorite places there. In addition there is a dense rainforest area right in the middle of the island which is good for hiking or horseback riding. The island has 5 towns and several barangays. A lot of nice resorts are available for evey taste. This remains to date one of Philippines' best secrets to date. At the moment many foriegners are slowly discovering this wonderful paradise. Hopefully more will soon come to discover the richness that is here as well. It's also the safest island in the chain. I lived here for a year. And will be going back again.

My wife and I travelled to Camiguin Island with our two teenage daughters in July 2007. We stayed in the Golden Sunset Beach Club, formerly known as the Camiguin Island Beach Club. The new owners have certainly made their mark on the Club. The rooms are exceptionally well presented, clean, comfortable and tastefully furnished. The swiming pool is well maintained and the compound is beautifully laid out in flowers and greenery. We were pleasantly surprised by the food - not only delicious, but hot, which is not always the case in the Philippines, and we could say exciting. The management really make an effort to ensure that the guests have a pleasant and memorable stay. One real surprise was the beach, which is adjacent to the club. It provides some of the best snorkelling we have experienced in Asia, with myriad fish species and multi coloured starfish, octopus and other beautiful sea creatures. The day trip to Mantigue Island added to the highs of our holiday. Our only regret was that we had only given ourselves four days on Camiguin. We shall put that right for our next visit there, which is already too far away.

Caramoan Peninsula

Melo Villareal
The name Caramoan has been officially adapted since 1619, the year it was founded by a zealous missionary, the venerable Spanish friar Francisco De La Cruz Y Oropesa. This 60-year old priest penetrated the thick virgin forest of the Caramoan Peninsula and found a small settlement in a place called Baluarte. Later on, this settlement was turned over to the administration of the Holy Bishopric in 1696.

The small town of Caramoan was then located at the tip of Caramoan Peninsula, a rugged place of land extending into the waters of the Maqueda Channel on the North and East and Lagonoy Gulf on the South.

It was determined that the first name given to this place was Guta de Leche by the Dutch traders who operated a gold mine in Lahuy Island and frequented the area to trade with the natives, prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. The name was perhaps derived from the milkdrop stalagmites found among the rocks of Guta Port. But upon the arrival of the Spaniards, the place came to be called "Carahan" for the sea turtle, which was at that time to be found in great number along the shores of the Peninsula.

Caramoan is one of the thirty-five municipalities of the Province of Camarines Sur and is situated at the heart of the Caramoan Peninsula at the southernmost tip of Luzon. It occupies the lower eastern portion of the Province of Camarines Sur. It is bounded on the north by the town of Garchitorena and the Pacific Ocean; on the northeast by the island province of Catanduanes; on the south by Lagonoy Gulf; on the east by the Maqueda Channel and on the west by the municipality of Presentacion.

The municipality is situated between east longitude 124o59" and 13o46" north latitude. It covers approximately 27,741 square kilometers with approximately 71 kilometers of irregular coastline surrounded by the vast ocean, bay, seas and swamps. It is approximately 501 kilometers away from Metro Manila; 95 kilometers from the municipality of Pili, where the seat of the provincial government and the Pili Domestic Airport are located; and 110 kilometers away from Naga City, the heart of Bicol.

Composed of 49 barangays, the municipality has a total of 134 sitios.

Cebu's colon street

Cebu's colon street
Cebu is the Queen City of the South and the country's oldest city dating back to Magellan's arrival in 1521. Growth was slow until the mid-19th century, when increasing trade caused rapid development. Today Metropolitan Cebu extends over 350 square kilometers, with five cities and municipalities and a population of more than 1 million.

Cebu (Sugbo) is the name given to the city, the metropolis, the island, the province. Cebu Province is made up of 48 municipalities and 5 cities - Cebu, Danao, Lapu-lapu, Mandaue and Toledo - with Cebu City as its capital. Cebu Island is a sliver of an island centrally located in the Visayas region of the Philippine archipelago, 365 miles south of Manila. Metropolitan Cebu is a complex of 3 cities and 6 municipalities with a population of over 1 million. Cebu City is the oldest Philippine city, and is also called the "Queen City of the South". As the first Spanish settlement, it was called Ciudad del Santissimo Nombre de Jesus.

The entire province has a total land area of 508,844 hectares, and its temperature averages 27 ° C all year round. The languages/dialects spoken are Cebuano Tagalog and English.

Cebu is also the diving center of the Philippines with magnificent coral formations, spectacular marine life and drop-offs plunging to blue nothingness. Fine weather all year round makes Cebu a favorite for water sports. Swim, snorkel & dive; windsurf, sail or ski; ride the waves, stroll along the beach, get a glorious tan. Revel in Cebu's sun, sand, sea & sky!

Language: The locals speak Cebuano - a dialect common in Visayas and Mindanao region. Pilipino (also known as Tagalog) is the national language, however English is widely used.

Carcar town, just south of Cebu City, has many preserved Castillian houses, gardens, and churches.

The Chapel of the Last Supper in Mandaue City, just off north of Cebu City, features hand-carved life-size statues of Christ and his apostles dating back to Spanish times.

The Magellan Monument in Mactan Island was raised in 1886 to mark the spot where Magellan died, who was killed in the fierce battle of Mactan. Datu Lapu-lapu, the chieftain in Mactan, who refused to submit to the Spanish Conquistadoris. There is also a Monument of Datu Lapu-lapu honoring him as the first Filipino patriot to repel the first European aggression. Maribago is the center of the region's guitar making industry. As well as many histrorical sites there are popular hotels, beach clubs and resorts.

Cebuanos are very proud of their local cuisine and so they should be. Whether it is tender calamari frittos that simply melt in your mouth, a tasty lechon manok (charcoal grilled chicken), or a grilled tuna belly garnished with calamansi juice, you will be spoiled for choice with the array and assortment of culinary delights on offer.

Whilst we don't claim to be experts, having traveled extensively around the world, we do know what's good and what's not! We have made some suggestions below which we suggest you check-out. One should definitely experience some of the sugba or sinugba (barbecue) restaurants or stalls.

Grills, Grills and More Grills

One that comes to mind is Tsibogs (prounouced - Chee boogs). Its famous, mouth-watering BBQ (to be washed down with lots of ice cold San Miguels...) will certainly keep you coming back. Another of the more famous is Larsians on Fuente Osmena – probably not the most hygienic place on earth but the food is good. Neo Neo on Mactan Island (just past the old bridge) is a clean, spacious and fun place to hang-out and enjoy high-quality grilled food. For those who love lechon baboy, (roast pig) most good grills serve it and the above establishments all
do.

I Want My Chicks For Free and My MTV...(a royalty cheque would be a bonus)

If you prefer fancier, more upscale dining, there are a number of modern international restaurants.

For the finest local seafood offerings and a location to die for, head straight for the Shangri-La on Mactan. Ponder: A chilled buttery chardonnay, coupled with fresh lobster - devine. Throw in a couple of million stars delightfully twinkling above you, the soft beats of some ultra chic lounge music, the gentle sound of the sea lapping at the rocks below and your partner's glowing smile; divine intervention...

An interesting establishment that has opened in Mactan Island is Vine City Wine Bar and Restaurant (032 342 8927). Situated on the main highway, 50 metres past Marina Mall heading towards the new bridge. Delightful staff serve simple but high quality (pastas, steaks, salads etc.) fare and a reasonable selection of wines. Tastefully decorated, this is just what the doctor prescribes; if you wish to chill out after a hectic day.

Now if you want some real upscale food, in a trendy outlet, head off to Olio. They have some super dishes. Try the scallop with caviar, or the aubergine with mozzerella and anchovies... mmm! Olio Bar and Restaurant, conveniently located at Crossroads, Banilad.

Ginza is another place where you will dine in style with food to match. This establishment is 26 years old and still counting. Stood the test of time with much aplomb and with the recently decorated interiors slides effortlessly into yet another gear. The food is contemporary Japanese. Signature dish is the Pork teppanyaki. Slithers of tender pork, served with a hybrid mayo wasabe sauce. Ginza: Old Banilad Road, Banilad, Cebu City (231 4612)

Just down the road from Olio, near the entrance to Maria Luisa Estate; just off Banilad Road is Guiseppe. This fantastic restaurant serves; in my humble opinion the very best pizzas in Cebu. In addition to the pizzas, you will find sumptuous pasta offerings with the freshest of fresh ingredients; home style Italian at its best. A laid back atmosphere radiates from this establishment. Run by ex: Shangri-La regional chef, Guiseppe's restaurant is a must do whilst in Cebu. Guiseppe's, Maria Luisa Park Road Cebu City. (343 9901)

If you have no time to dine in, and want something quick: there is always Davinci's Pizza in Mactan, famous for the white sauce pizza - err at least that's what they claim. (420 8888)

Hamburgers To Die For...

If a simple burger’s what’s your hungering for, fret not. Cebuanos more than proud of their tantalizing grills have come up with burgers that make the more common brands pale in comparison. Noteworthy are Flame it and Burger Joint. Don't go there thinking your in for a light snack. The Flame It 1/2 pounder - is just that. Half 1/2 a pound of magic primetime beef. Yep, primetime! The real deal; no Holyfield...Juicy and marinated for who knows how long and with who knows what, it is nothing but sensational for any burger lover. Burger Joint is a similar concept. Eat in both and you will shun going back to those "other" more famous international brands.

Another favorite of Mactan residents is the French cafe at Marina Mall, Cafe de France. Freshly baked pastries, some excellent clones of croque monsieur's, pig in a blanket, and an assortment of freshly baked pastry delights. As it is a cafe, one can wash down these delights with copious amounts of strong coffee. Definitely, a winning combination!

Clubbing Like There's No Tomorrow!

Nightlife in Cebu is lively and really starts rocking after 8pm. The seedier go-go dance places are concentrated on Mango Avenue (now General Maxilom) with establishments like Viking, Papillon and Blackhole. Arena. The latter is a larger place filled with more scantily-clad dancers who will come up and ask the S.O.P., "helloooo sirrrrrr, wear rrrrrrrrr yoooooooo froooooom, sirrrrr?" Not too far from Mango Avenue is Jaguar KTV and go-go dance place. This is located in a plush theatre.

The Live Wire

If you prefer a more sophisticated ambience with world-class music, look no further than Jazz n Bluz. This slick restaurant bar - which could double as a Blue Note anywhere in the world - usually has two bands performing and doesn't close until the last customer leaves. Despite the name, you will find Jazz, a little Blues and a lot of easy-listening music.

Sinners and Saints Resto Bar on Banilad Road is also a fun place to hang-out. With their barmen and bargirls dressed up as devils and angels respectively and a host of good local live music is on display. Ratskys in Ayala, Papa Roast and Seafood Resto Bar and Kaona Grill also have their fair share of good live music to complement the food.

Spinners Inc.

If you prefer to hear DJ's, the Crossroads complex on Banilad Road which houses small intimate clubs such as Vudu (house & techno music) and Cafe Teatro which also has a DJ on most nights playing faves from the 70's, 80's and some Latin beats. Teatro is run by an attractive Cebuana appropriately named Queenie, who is a wonderful host. Further down the (Banilad) road you will find Cielo, which after dinner, transforms into a cool club with a DJ who plays mainly house and some lighter techno music. While Cielo is a fun place to hang-out, be seen and dance, it should not be overlooked as a dining experience. My personal favorites include: penne rustica and chicken parmigiana. Be warned, the portions are not small. For updated information on where to eat, drink and stay, we suggest: http://www.cebulifestyles.com

Disco Duck...

Both Nasa and Sunflower Discos are large clubs/ discos, with big thumping sounds systems and lots of lights. The latter attracts its fair share of the tourist trade. Not really the ed's scene so we unfortunately can't shed much more light on them!

Real Pubs!

Noteworthy on the sports bar side is Badgers. An appealing sports bar with lots of plasma TV's, live coverage of most worldwide sporting events, deco that could be from any North American bar and the has some decent pub food on offer. It is also one of the few, if not the only bar that sells Guiness stout and one of the few that sells real Aussie meat pies.

Magellan's Landing at Marina Mall (three of their ever smiling staff pictured above) is also a great place to hang-out, enjoy a coldie and kick back. They serve some excellent pub-grub there and the clientele is an eclectic mix of foreigners and locals. Be sure to try the steak and mushroom pie, or cajun chicken dishes.

Kimchi Anyone?

With burgeoning Korean tourist influx, we are now witnessing the growth of KTV places (Karaoke TV) popping up all over the place. Small wonder then that karaoke parlors everywhere have prominent signs posted for (GROs) or guest relations officers. These very nimble ladies can have quite an impact on your wallet if you’re not eagle-eyed. Two of the larger and more upmarket KTV's are located in Mactan. The White Castle on Airport Road and another in the Waterfront Airport Hotel.

If you’re passionate about music and looking for a comprehensive list of bands in Cebu go to the band directory.

If you have some favorite places to hang-out or to eat in or wish your establishment to be listed, be sure to let us know. We'll quickly mobilize our wonderful editor to check it out. Palawan

Gregg Butensky - madnomad.com
Palawan is a lush green island with some of the best spots to dive in the country. The dive sites as well as the luxury resorts are located at El Nido at the north end of the island. Go there for seashells butterflies jungle walks and the Tabon Caves an ancient burial site.

Palawan is 500 km southwest of Manila. The capital of Palawan is Puerto Princessa, here is also a cute airport. If you drive ca 100 km north by main road and then 50 km west (this trip takes appr 3-4 hours), you will find yourself in Port Barton village. If you want to be secluded from the civil world, this is the place to be. I loved the village! The electricity is there only from 6-11PM, but I havn't seen more happy people. We stayed in Greenviews resort www.palawandg.clara.net, I would highly recommend this place due to fiendly staff and the beauty around the place.

If you are keen on wreck diving be sure to visit Busuanga island north of El Nido. In the midst of the second World War the American army decided to heavily damage the Japanese Imperial supply lines, which they did in the bay of Busuanga island. Nowadays a dozen or so of Japanese warships and supply ships litter the seabottom in this bay. All these ships are accesible to wreckdivers, an absolute must as far as I am concerned. Whilst in this particular area (Busuanga island) don't miss out on the stunning lakes on Coron island, which lies right next to Busuanga. Don't forget to bring insect repellent when visiting the Coron lakes! You can also cruise around the Coron Islands on the 7107 Islands Cruise Ship http://travel.groovenet.ph/cruises

Furthermore the island of Palawan remains a tropical paradise, it's rather cheap, lush, densely populated and lacks the effects of mass-tourism. For me it was only possible to take money out of the ATM in Puerto princesa (Palawan's capital), so when travelling from Puerto Princesa up North don't forget to stock cash. Palawan is a last frontier, especially for people that don't like meeting heeps of backpackers/ other tourists.

i
Lucena was first known as "Buenavista" which means beautiful scenic spots. Later, the name "Buenavista" was changed to "Oroqieta" in honor of the Spanish Governor General Oroqieta. Then the place was called "Cotta" meaning a strong port. Pursuant to an "Orden Real Supper Civil" promulgated on November 5, 1879 the name Lucena was given to the community to tribute to the late Reverrend Mariano Granja, a Franciscan prelate of the town of Lucena, Province of Andalucia, Spain. Before Lucena became a municipality on June 23, 1880, it was a barrio of the town of Tayabas, then the capital of the Province of Tayabas (now Quezon Province. During World War II, Lucena experienced some grim realities of war in the hands of the Japanese military forces. Fortunately, the city was not devastated by the war. By vitue of Republic Act No. 3271 Lucena became a chartered city. Congressman Manuel S. Enverga of the first district of Quezon and Congressman Pascual Espinosa sponsored the bill creating the city of Lucena. It passed both houses of Congress on March 7, 1961. The City of Lucena was inaugurated on august 19, 1962 on the occassion of the 84th Birth Anniversaary of the late President Manuel L. Quezon

River running through Catarman

River running through Catarman

The Phillipine archipelago comprises over 7,000 islands and Samar is the third-largest one, connected to Leyte_island on the southwestern side and bordering on the Pacific Ocean on the eastern side. The island has beautiful beaches, hot springs and an impressive natural park.

The Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park is located in the southern tip of the province and was founded to preserve the caves and rainforest. Near Gandara, one can visit the Blanca Aurora Waterfalls. The capital Catarman is the largest of the 25 towns on the islands.

Catarman area is unspoilt by tourism, and has few tourist amenities. Small friendly pension houses are the norm. Caterman has good market and provincial shopping, and is recovering very well from major fire that devestated central area.

Airport is very basic, making flights in and out interesting, as flight path is out to sea, with runway starting at beach, and road runs right through centre of runway!

Beatiful countryside, and small villages. Very clean beaches, but limited development (hunt out the few resorts).

Advised to travel only with local guide for safety, and to apreciate what this area offers.

Subic Bay Golf Course

Subic Bay Golf Course

Subic Bay is a bay on the west coast of the island of Luzon in the Philippines, about 100km northwest of Manila Bay. Formerly the site of a major United States Navy base, it is now the location of an industrial and commercial area known as the Subic Bay Freeport Zone under the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.

Subic Bay is surrounded by Olongapo City, the town of Subic and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, both in the province of Zambales. Also in the bay was Cubi Point Naval Air Station and Grande Island, once home to Fort Wint and later turned into a military resort. Development of Olongapo City was largely tied to the presence of the United States Navy base at Subic Bay, once the largest U.S. military base in Asia. An arsenal and ship-repair facility was established at Subic Bay in 1885 by the then colonial power, Spain. Following the Spanish-American war of 1898–1899, Subic Bay became a U.S. Navy and Marine base, and grew to be a major facility.

In 1991, the Philippine Senate rejected terms for renewal of the lease of the base. After nearby Mount Pinatubo erupted, the base closed and the last ships left in 1992. The residents of nearby Olongapo City that hosted US Naval military presence for 94 years under the leadership of their mayor, Richard J. Gordon, some 8,000 people volunteered to protect and preserve for posterity the US $8 Billion worth of facilities and property from looting and destruction.

Subic has since been transformed and became a model for bases conversion into commercial use after the Cold War with blue chip companies pumping in over $3 billion of investments creating 70,000 jobs in the first four years. It was host to the 4th APEC Leaders' Summit in November 24, 1996. Federal Express's Asia Pacific hub, Asia-One, is at Subic Bay.

In addition to commercial use, Subic Bay is also a popular destination for weekend visitors from Manila. Attractions include several small beaches, an underwater aquarium, jungle survival tours, and duty-free shopping centers

Founded by Recollect priests in 1611, the village of Paynawen moved from one place to another until it settled permanently along the banks of Bancal River, where a fort was built as a defense against pirates who constantly molested the region. In 1860, the How the town got this name became a legend, that has been told, retold and handed down from generation to generation. The story happened during the early days of Spanish colonization. It was told, that while most of the Spaniards were busy establishing the pueblo, one of their men sneaked out from the group and curiously wandered around the village of the natives. Along the way, he saw a group of people, who incidentally were eating a certain kind of soft fruit. This particular Spaniard, being stranger to the place, approached them and asked the name of the place, but because of language differences, the natives thought, he was asking the name of the fruit they were eating, immediately, they replied “Iba . ., Iba . ., Iba . . “ from then on, this small pueblo was named Iba. The early formation of Iba was attributed to the Zambals, an ethnic group who belonged to the Malay race. They originated from the Celebes. They pushed the dwarfish, kinky haired Negritoes or Aetas eastward to the hinterlands. These Zambals eventually established their settlements on what is now the Municipality of Iba.Through the course of time, other ethnic groups like the Tagalog and Ilocanos migrated, occupied and formed their settlements on the southern portion of the province. They later on inter married with the Zambals and became the ancestors of these present generation. At various points in history, the capital of the province shifted from each of the three towns earlier established by the Spanish colonizers, namely, Masinloc, Sta. Several history milestones had swept over the Municipality during the early days. One of which was during the declaration of the establishment of the Zambales province on August 28,1901, by the second Philippine Commission, headed by William Howard Taft at St. Augustine Cathedral - a church built in 1700 out of coral and limestone. Another memorable event was when WWII broke out, the Japanese invading forces conducted a devastating bombing ran on Dec. 08, 1941 at Iba Airfield which resulted to the annihilation of both civilians and US forces stationed in the area. The Japanese Imperial Army later on, established their garrison at Poblacion, Iba. Originally, the municipality comprised of forty- five (45) sitios, eight (8) barrios and one (1) poblacion. FORT PILAR

FORT PILAR

The city is melting pot of cultures. Major proofs for that are the colorful vinta sails and the imposing stoneworks of Fort Pilar. Fort Pilar was built in 1635 by a Jesuit priest engineer and Spanish authorities to ward off attacks from Moros and foreign invaders. The fort was eventually converted to a shrine and miraculous powers are attributed to the statue of Our Lady of the Pillar. Other highlights to see are Plaza Pershing and the island of Great Santa Cruz. Plaza Pershing is a quaint remnant of a typical Spanish square, renamed in honor of a former American Governor of the Moro Province. Pettit Barracks was established by U.S. Occupation Forces in 1899 and named after its commanding officer. The major natural attraction is Great Santa Cruz Island, which is known for its pinkish sand beach. On the island is a fishing village, a lagoon and an old Muslim burial ground. Important notice: Mindanao and especially the city of Zamboanga experienced some kidnapping incidents. Please do not walk around during night-time and do not leave the city centre.

Davao City

Davao City
Davao City is located deep in the heart of the Philippines' exotic south, in the southeastern portion of Mindanao Island. It is a highly urbanized city that serves as the major economic, financial, and educational centre of the entire island. The city which falls nominally under the province of Davao del Sur Province, is bounded on the north by Davao and Compostela Valley provinces, on the east by Davao Gulf, on the south by Davao del Sur, and on the west by North Cotabato province.

Davao serves as the gateway to the island of Mindanao, being serviced by several national as well as international air and sea carriers. The brand new Davao International Airport (the busiest on the island) now handles international flights to Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and the Republic of Palau (Micronesia). The seaport meanwhile handles a sizable traffic of goods bound for Japan, China, the USA and the Middle East.

Considered one of the largest cities in the world in terms of land area, Davao now boasts of a population of close to 1.4 million (2005 census). People from all over the country have come here to explore all the possibilities that this city has to offer. In addition, the city and region also have a number of indigenous tribes that add colour and uniqueness to the area; like the Bagobo, Manobo, Mandaya, and Bilaan tribes.

To this day, Davao City continues to straddle two worlds - the new and the old. Part of it is a flourishing metropolis of business districts, mechanized farms and cosmopolitan villages where "instant millionaires" live. And the other part is a rural landscape of hills that roll down into fertile valleys, dominated by Mount Apo, the grandfather of all Philippine mountains.

There are lots of things for travellers to do. Tourists can try climbing Mount Apo, the country's tallest peak; nature trekking or hiking at Eden Nature Park; exploring the numerous pineapple, banana and other fruit plantations of which the region is known for; kayaking, sailing or just lazing around at any of the numerous beach resorts, including white sand resorts on nearby Samal Island. A must-see is the Philippine Eagle Centre in Malagos which artificially breeds the Philippine Eagle in captivity. For the more adventurous, there's white-water rafting and rappelling on the Davao River. Then there's Kadayawan sa Davao, a grand fiesta that happens every third week of August. Come to this fiesta and see indigenous tribes dancing to ancient rhythms, horse-fighting shows, floral float displays, and other fun-filled activities.

Being the center of employment and commerce as well being the host of major educational institutions, the population of Iba almost doubles during the daytime.Traders, market buyers, students, government and private employees flock to Iba in the daytime and return to their respective towns in the evening.
The Municipality of Iba had registered a population of 34,678 persons during the NSO Population Census 2000 and posted a population growth rate of 1.86 percent for the last five (5) years. This will likewise translate to a dependency ratio of 72 persons (young and old) for every 100 working-age persons.

At present, the population density of Iba is approximately 248 persons per square kilometers. Lesser concentration of people are noted in the Poblacion compared to out-lying rural rural barangay. Based from 2000 NSO Survey, registered household reached 7,260, equivalent to 4.78 persons for every household. At present, there are 7,961 households. The prevailing demographic structure of the town is considered to be relatively young so there is the greater possibility that population will accelerate growth over the coming years

Being the capital town and the seat of Provincial Government, it is about 210 km. away northwest of Manila, 83 km. north of Olongapo City and 85 km. south of Infanta, Pangasinan.

The Municipality of Iba spans a total land area of 15,338 hectares . Bounded on the north by the Municipality of Palauig , on the east by the Province of Tarlac , on the south by the Municipality of Botolan and on the west by the vast South China Sea , Iba occupies an area of 153.38 square kilometers . The Poblacion, where Central Business Districts are located, constitutes 1.06% or about 0.85 square kilometers of habitable area. Coastal villages of rural barangays, along the 12 kilometer stretch of pristine beaches, adjacent to a breathtaking scenery of 180 square kilometer of municipal fishing ground, are founded in a relatively gently sloping flat land, elevated to about 5 to 10 meters above the main sea level. But some 7 kilometers further eastward are the panoramic view of undulating to abruptly sloping terrain of hills, with elevation ranging from 200 to 600 meters. Mount Iba, considered to be the highest point in this Municipality, is estimated to be 1,670 meters above the main sea level, and straddles between the boundary of Iba and the Province of Tarlac.

Several natural drainage channels of the town originate from mountain slopes, flow westward towards the South China Sea. These long and winding rivers not only provide irrigation supply within the vast expanse of agricultural lands but also serve as outlet of flood waters accumulated in the low lying areas of the Municipality. Most notable among them are the Bancal River , Tacar River , Bagsit River and Marangla River .

Barbara farmers. Tambac River is a source of livelihood for the people in the sitio where small fishes and shrimps abound.

Fishing and Agriculture

Iba may not be a vegetable or rice valley like other towns but certainly, it boasts of being endowed with productive fishing grounds, rice lands, and vegetable plantations. Coastal barangays of Iba such as Lipay-Dingin, Sto. Rosario, Bangantalinga, Amungan and San Agustin provides fishermen and fish dealers with a stable source of income with their daily healthy catch of different species of fish from the rich sea such as tuna, tulingan, lapu-lapu, alumahan, pusit, and others while several fishponds yield hundreds of kilos of bangus, tilapia and sugpo.

Lush vegetables and ricelands are familiar sights in San Agustin, Amungan, Bangantalinga, Sta. Barbara, Dirita-Baloguen and Palanginan where vegetables like ampalaya, okra, eggplant, tomato and others fill the farm after harvest time. Like other towns of Zambales, Iba has two (2) types of water: the fresh and the salty or brackish. A dark crystalline soil (black soil), which indicates the presence of chromite , is found in barangay Sta. Barbara. Physical Features

Iba is centrally located in the province. Although the town is located in the low area, destructive floods seldom ravage the place. It is however, prone to typhoons because of its geographical location. The western section of the Municipality of Iba is a gentle sloping coastline plain with elevations of 5-10 meters above the main sea level. Some 7 kilometers farther east, abrupt increases in elevation maybe seen. Hills and mountains with elevations ranging from 20-600 meters occupy this municipality.

Meteorology and Rainfall

The town, like any other town of the province, is blessed with a mild climate of two types: the rainy and the dry season. Iba’s climate is no different from the other towns where rainy season begins from June and ends in September, while the dry season is from October to May. An average of 43.15 centimeters deep is noted with a temperature of 22 degrees centigrade is observed during rainfalls. The highest temperature experienced during this season is 24 degrees centigrade while the lowest is 19.18 degrees centigrade. A temperature as high as 35 degrees centigrade characterizes Iba.

Prevailing Winds

The northeast, southeast monsoon prevails over the municipality when intensified during period of typhoon, storm. Because of the exposure of the town to the vast China Sea, winds become distructive during strong typhoons. However, because of the presence of towering mountains on the eastern side, winds are controlled.

TOURISM

Tourism is one of the major economic activity in Iba during the summer period. Iba has become known to be a destination for beach activities and vacationing. In response to the growing number of both local and foreign visitors, investments in beach resorts have increased in the last fifteen years. Today there are about 50 beach resorts in Iba..

Iba is only 200 kilometers or a 4-hour drive from Manila. One will pass the new North Luzon Expressway with scenics like ricelands and rural living. The NLE exits at San Fernando Pampanga, a city that is fast developing. The road going to Iba passes the small portion of Bataan Province before reaching the road entrances to SBMA. One may find some extra time to isit SBMA and see the development of this tourism and industrial complex. It would take another one hour to reach Iba.

Except for Sand Valley Beach Resort which was established in the late 60's, Iba's beaches where not given attention. It was only in the 80's that many of each resorts cropped up as tourists began looking for pristine beaches and peaceful vacationing places. Today, Iba's coastline is dotted with beach resorts of all kinds. Iba's beach resorts pride their being clean and have the safe waters for swimming. It very fortunate that because there are no industrial activities in Iba, its waters have remained pollution-free.

Iba is endowed with resources that appeal to tourists and vacationists. The well-knoiwn Zambales mangoes are plentiful in summer. The distinct taste and texture of the mango make one's palate crave for more. Other delicacies that visitors bring for "pasalubomgs" are the Pastillas from carabao milk, linga candy bars, suman, puto, kutsinta, bibingka and fruits like duhat or lomboy, kaimito and many others.

A glance of the Philippine map will easily reveal the similarity of the physiography of Kalinga to that of a bust of a man akin to former President Ferdinand E. Marcos. The province’s geographic feature is charcterized in the western portion by sharp crested interlinking peaks of the steep slope, isolated flat lands, plateaus, and valleys. The eastern portion has generally rolling, gradually sloping foothills. With interlocking wide tracks of flat lands and flood plains along its main drainage system, this rare geography interposes a great role expected of the province in national development pursuits.

Brief History

The name Kalinga is derived from the Ibanag and Gaddang word that means “headhunters.” In the past, headhunting was considered noble and symbolized bravery. Tattoos, a status symbol that men respected and women admired, were given to mingols (warriors) as reward.

The bodong (or peace pact) is an indigenous socio-political system that defines intertribal relationships to the Kalingas. It was developed to minimize traditional warfare and headhunting, and served as an institutional renewal, maintenance, and reinforcement of social ties. Recently, the bodong was expanded into a multi-lateral peace pact providing a means of strengthening unity in some parts of the Cordilleras.

During the short-lived Philippine Republic, President Emilio Aguinaldo in his flight to Palanan, Isabela crossed the upper Kalinga areas in his vain attempt to elude his American pursuers. On March 18, 1900, he established his headquarters at Lubuagan where he stayed for 35 days until he learned that his pursuers were sighted at Mabongtot. He escaped northwards towards Tabuk in the historic last leg of his flight to Palanan where he was later captured.

On June 18, 1966, Republic Act No. 4695 was enacted creating from the old Mountain Province five separate and independent provinces: Benguet, Ifugao, Mountain Province (Bonito), and Kalinga-Apayao. On March 26, 1967, President Ferdinand E. Marcos administered the oath of office to the new officials of the four newly born provinces.

Presently, Kalinga is fast emerging as the “Land of Living Waters” following its operation as a regular and separate province on February 14, 1996.

The word Kalinga means a “highlander”, “headhunter”, “enemy” or “war”. All of these indicate a wildness of the place where the people of Kalinga lived. The province is surrounded by the provinces of Apayao in the north, Cagayan in the east, Isabela in the south and Abra in the west. Characterized by a rugged terrain that reaches the northern part of the Cordillera scale.
The modern-day Kalingas and Apayaos are said to be the ancestors of Indonesian immigrants that came to Luzon thousands of years ago. During the Spanish regime, they have established military and missionary post around town near the Pacil River. Then again, when the Philippine Revolution broke loose both the Spanish soldiers and missionaries abandoned the Cordillera Mountain. On February 14,1995 the province of Kalinga and Apayao was changed into two regular provinces. Kalinga • Related Websites • Provincial Newspapers • Banks • Zip Codes • Area Codes • Hotels/Resorts • Restaurants • Emergency Numbers The natives of the province form the largest ethnic linguist group in the region. They speak the same language but are divided into different tribal groups, the northern and southern cultural factions. The northern Kalingas believed to be the most colorful and vividly attired, in addition to the most heavily ornamented. They are also the most serious rice farmers of all the Cordillera community. Kalingas are also skillful in pottery making, basket weaving and metal works. The province’s rich land makes it very fitting for agricultural production. A rich harvest of rice, corn, cassava, coffee, mangoes, pineapples and legumes are their main crops. They also have massive grassland that sustains cattle and livestock. Deposits of gold, copper, sulfur, phosphate and guano are some of their mineral resources. Now being promoted as a new business frontier in the Cordilleras, the province is pushing for the organization of the Regional Agro-Industrial Center. The province of Kalinga can be reach via two routes. One is via Tuguegarao in the Cagayan Province where there is a domestic airport that provides the closest air link, and the other is through Bontoc, Mountain Province going to Tinghayan in the southern part of Kalinga. A very good tourist destination, Kalinga boasts of their rich cultural heritage, which has remained unspoiled by westernization and also, their natural attractions ideal for cultural and ecological tourism challenges.

The settlement of Koronadal and its creation as a municipality by virtue of Executive Order No. 82 dated August 18, 1947 was marked by a rapid initial development, so that when the province of South Cotabato was created under Republic Act No. 4849 on July 18, 1966, it easily became the capital town. In the past, the place was populated by B'laans and Maguindanaos. The word Koronadal is believed to have been derived from two B'laan words- koron or kolon meaning cogon grass and nadal or datal meaning plain which optly described the place to the natives. On the other hand, Marbel, which is another name for the poblacion, is a B'laan term "Marb-El" which means "murky waters" (it is possible that name was first used to) referring to a river, now called Marbel River. Koronadal used to comprise the area extending from the banks of Buluan Lake to the north to Barangay Polonoling in the municipality of Tupi to the south from Quezon mountain range to the northeast to the municipality of T'Boli to the southeast.
It was in August 18, 1947 when President Manuel Roxas signed the Executive Order creating the municipalities in the entire province of South Cotabato, one of which was Koronadal. The same executive order likewise mandated the official function of the municipal government which began after the qualification and election of the first set of municipal officials. Elected were Datu Kudanding Kamsa, Municipal Mayor, Perfecto Sueno Sr., Vice Mayor; Councilors: Porferio Cuenca, Felix Suscano, Alejandro Poticar, Gregorio Hechanova, Zacarias Cadule, and Dencio Sarate. The first Municipal Judge was Braulio Hurtado and the first Health Officer was Dr. Felimon de Jesus, Cornelio Mariveles became the Chief of Police and Godofredo Gazo, the Municipal Secretary.

The municipal government of Koronadal began its official function on January 1, 1948 with an approved Annual Estimated Budget of P30,000.00. The land area of the municipality by then was comparable with the Province of Bata-an embracing the present municipalities of Tampakan, Tupi, Banga, Lake Sebu, Surallah, T'Boli, Sto. Niño, Norala, and Isulan. Municipal Council Resolution No. 32, Series of 1948 mandated and proclaimed January 10 of each year as the Municipal Town Fiesta commemorating the foundation of Marbel Settlement District of the National Land Settlement Koronadal was converted into a component city of South Cotabato now known as the City of Koronadal by virtue of Republic Act 8803 on October 8, 2000. At present, Koronadal is a fast developing growth center composed of twenty seven (27) barangays including the four (4) zones in the poblacion. Being the capital town of South Cotabato, it is the center of the province in terms of political, cultural and socio-economic activities. Business firms and other establishments sprout in Koronadal. Identified also as the Provincial Agri-industrial Center of South Cotabato. Koronadal boasts of its favorable geographical location, rich human and natural resources, and potentials conducive for trade business and industry. The country's premier city, Makati offers a lifestyle of comfort and relaxation, wholesome environment, deluxe class hotels and restaurants as well as various places of interests.

Brief History

The history of Makati dates as far back as the time when Don Miguel Lopez de Legaspi first set foot on it and gave it its present name, as derived from the Tagalog phrase meaning "ebbing tide". Of course Makati had been in existence even before that, but all we know about it is that it was then part of the territory ruled by a chieftain called Lakan Tagkan and his wife, Bouan, who were living in Namayan, now part of Sta. Ana, Manila.

In 1589, when a permanent seat in the city corporation was put up for sale at a public auction in accordance with the custom of the period, Captain Pedro de Brito, then aside to the Spanish Army of Staff and chief constable of the Audencia, purchased the property which included the territory now occupied by Makati, for 1,400 pesos.

The House of Probation and its adjoining church were to be built on a hill called Buenavista, within the confines of a cattle ranch which the founders owned in a district called Makati. the church was to be placed under the patronage of Saint Peter. (This condition probably accounts for the prefixing of San Pedro to the name "Makati", which later on also came to be called "Sampiro").

Three centuries later in 1914, by Act No. 2390 of the Philippine Legislature, the name "San Pedro de Makati" was changed to "Makati" which has remained its official name today

Geography

Makati is located within the quadrangle of One Hundred Twenty degrees (120) latitude north and One Hundred Forty Three degrees (143) longitude east. It is bounded on the north by the Pasig River facing the city Mandaluyong, on the east by the Municipality of Pateros and on the northwest by Manila and on the south and southwest by the city of Pasay.

Political Subdivision

Makati is one of the eight (8) cities of the National Capital Region. The city is composed of two (2) districts further subdivided into thirty two (32) barangays the biggest of which is Forbes Park with 8.5 percent while the smallest is Kasilawan with 0.3 percent of the area.

Climate

Like anywhere else in the country, Makati has no pronounced seasons: the dry summer months from November to May and rainy months from June to October.

Language

Filipino is commonly used being the national language. English is also widely spoken and the second language is for commercial and legal translation.

Manila Harbor

Manila Harbor
Metropolitan Manila on the whole has officially 6 million inhabitants (unofficially 9 million) and it is one of the most exhausting cities in Southeast Asia. Don't expect to get any rest, for that kind of thing you need to take a plane or shuttle boat from manila Bay to one of the smaller islands.

Manila is the capital of the Philippines and was founded on June 24th, 1571 on the harbor now known as Manila Bay on the east coast of Luzon, the Philippines largest and most northerly island. It is the second largest city in the country with a population of 1,581,000 trailing second behind Quezon City with 2,173,000. Manila started out as a humble village and has grown to become the governmental, commercial and educational center of the nation.

The heart of old Manila can be found inside Intramuros - meaning "within the walls," a well cared for 15th century original Spanish settlement. The fort and St. Augustine Church still are good examples of colonial architecture. Old ruins damaged by WWII still stand across the landscape while modern edifices dart the distant skyline. An outstanding example of colonial architecture is the Manila Cathedral, the third to be built on site and whose tower and dome can be seen miles away. Eateries specializing in savory local cuisine as well as international tastes are conveniently located within the walls. While a golf course encircles the entire ancient settlement.

The Sunset at Manila Bay is also one of the most spectacular in the world. It can be enjoyed along Roxas Boulevard where one can take a leisurely stroll and arrive at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Here Fine Art, Western and Eastern music and dance meet in the likes of the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, Ballet Philippines, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. There are convenient trains called the LRT, LRT2 and MRT railways for people to get around the entirety of Metro Manila, or try your luck like a local and enjoy the adventure, history and thrill of a Jeepney - the quintessential Filipino transportation.

Negros Island, the fourth biggest island in the Philippine archipelago, lies near the central part of the country. Negros Occidental, in the western side of the island, is one of the 6 provinces comprising Region VI, Western Visayas.

It has a total land area of nearly 8 thousand square kilometers and a coastline stretching 800 kilometers. The province is composed of 13 cities and 19 municipalities with Bacolod City as its capital.

Parts of the province are largely level plains and gently rolling slopes separated from its neighboring province of Negros Oriental by mountain ranges. The most famous of these mountain ranges is Mount Kanlaon.

541 thousand hectares of Negros Occidental’s land area are alienable and disposable. The rest are forestlands.

98% of the alienable and disposable lands are agricultural areas, including built-up spaces. The remaining 2% are fishponds.

The province is blessed with generally pleasant climate with an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. It has two pronounced seasons: dry season from December to May and rainy season from June to November.

Negros Occidental has a population of about 2.6 million. It is the fourth most populous province in the Philippines with 54% of its people living in rural areas.

Hiligaynon is the widely used dialect. However, most of its people are proficient in Pilipino, the national language, and English. Negros Occidental has a high literacy rate of 91% and employment rate of 89%.

The Negrenses, as the people of the province are called, are regarded as affectionate, fun loving, highly educated, skilled, and entrepreneurial individuals.

The economy of the province is principally driven by agriculture. Land is where the wealth of the province originated and continues to emanate.

Of the agricultural areas, sugarcane occupied 161 thousand hectares, followed by rice with 113 thousand hectares, and the remaining spaces devoted to corn, coconut, fruit and vegetable crops, including built-up spaces.

Over 143 thousand hectares of agricultural lands have been distributed to more than 104 thousand farmer-beneficiaries as of August 2004 under the land reform program.

Sugarcane has been cultivated in the province since the mid 18th hundreds and has been the key factor in bringing material growth to Negros Occidental.

Today, it still dominates the economy and the landscape of the province.

Negros Occidental’s output of more than 1 million metric tons for crop year 2002-2003 accounts for nearly half of the country’s sugar production in an industry that generates an estimated annual revenue of more than P18 Billion.

There are 12 sugar mills in the province, of which only 10 are presently operational. Victorias Milling Company has the highest rated capacity with 15,000 tonnes cane per day.

However, the volatility of the sugar industry forced the province to shift, albeit slowly, to other high value crops and alternative industries. The diversification has proven to be successful.

Production of rice, the basic commodity for food security, has been increasing. By 2003, annual output of 437 thousand metric tons of palay was 33% better than two years ago. This allowed the province to significantly raise its sufficiency level from 65% to more than 84%. The improvement could be attributed to the introduction and promotion of hybrid rice, which increased rice yields to 3.8 metric tons per hectare. Because of the success of the program, area planted to hybrid rice has increased nearly five-fold. The highest hybrid yield was recorded at 10.3 tons per hectare.

Corn also registered increasing gains. Production for 2003 of 42 thousand metric tons outperformed 2001 output by 18%. Average yield per hectare has also grown by 18%.

Other fruit and vegetable crops, except for banana and cassava, likewise improved their harvest.

Harvested coconut was placed at 139 million nuts, while production of banana; fruit and vegetable crops totaled 110 million kilograms.

Livestock and poultry are industries where Negros Occidental has strongly diversified.

With the province successfully quarantined from the dreaded Foot & Mouth Disease and the Bird Flu, and with other endemic diseases under control, total production of livestock and poultry in 2003 of 49 thousand metric tons exceeded estimated local demand by 18%.

Fishing is likewise an industry where the province has remained focused. After all, 9 of its cities and 16 of its municipalities are located along the coast and a great portion of the population depends on fishing for their livelihood.

The area for exploitation by this industry is huge covering most of the coastal areas and the rich fishing grounds of the Visayan Sea on the north, Sulu Sea on the south, Tañon Strait on the east, Guimaras Strait and Panay Gulf at the southern portion of the province. These rich coastal areas and fishing grounds continue to be generous to the people of Negros Occidental.

In 2003, products from deep-sea fishing, municipal marine and inland waters, and aquaculture reached 87 thousand metric tons, 30% better than 2001 production.

The province is rich in mineral deposits. Minerals that abound in the province are primary copper with estimated reserve of 591 million metric tons and gold ore with estimated reserve of 25 million tons.

Silver and molybdenum deposits are also abundant, as well as non-metallic minerals suitable for agricultural and industrial uses.

Notwithstanding its great potential, the mining industry in Negros Occidental has remained virtually dormant since the biggest copper mine in Sipalay suspended its operation.

Another industry being pushed by the province is tourism. It has a high synergy with other industries and a multiplier effect on consumption and services. In 2003, tourist arrivals totaled nearly 141 thousand with foreigners comprising only 1%. However, local tourism in Negros is very strong.

Negros Occidental is endowed with beautiful natural scenery and attractions, rich historical and cultural heritage as well as festivals and events that make it an attractive tourist destination.
