| Fethiye Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Great location with the best views overlooking fethiye bay www.duygupension.com Great location with the best views overlooking fethiye bay www.duygupension.com Fethiye is a very pretty town at the hillsides of the Mount Mendos, the part of the Tourus Mountain chains, and surrounds the bay to which it gave its name. |
|
| The high mountain range formed by rises and falls of the crust during the
Tertiary Geological Period, and hundreds of bays lying at the mountainside
seem to embrace each other along the Fethiye shore line. This limestone
mountain range (it was called the Kragos and Antikragos in the antique
period) with an altitude of more than 6560 feet (2000m.) forms the southwest
end of the Toros (Taurus) chain and lies parallel to the shore without a
single passage to the inner regions. On a warm and sunny winter day, peculiar to the Mediterranean climate while you are sipping at your Turkish tea or Turkish coffee, at one of the local tea gardens, along the coast, these mountains with pine trees at their skirts, white snow and mist on their summits will once more welcome you to heaven. Dry, long, hot summers and short, warm, rainy winters are climatic characteristics of Fethiye . The temperature which is around 86-105 F (30-40 C) during the summer, is usually above 50 F (10 C) in the winter. Considering the fact that in these turquoise-colored seas that in no season falls below 60 F (16 C) swimming is possible for nine months of the year, we might as well conclude that there are only two seasons in Fethiye : Spring and Summer! Due to the prevailing climatic conditions in the region, pine forests consisting of silver fir, Scotch fir, and Norway spruce cover the place. Olive, laurel, myrtle, acacia, plane tree, and popular trees are some other types that you can find in this rich flora. The frankincense tree (Liquidamber Orientalis) which is the source of myrrh widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, is among the rare species in the world. You could have a comfortable journey to Fethiye by the three highways through the pine forests, with connections to Mugla, Antalya and Burdur. Scheduled bus trips in all three directions provide the link between Fethiye and other cities. The nearest center for air travel is the Dalaman Airport 31 miles (50 kms.) to Fethiye. In addition to the year round Istanbul - Izmir - Ankara and Antalya connected flights of Turkish Airlines, there are direct flights to all major cities in Europe, Asia and America. During the touristic season, Fethiye's having the fourth largest seaport after Iskenderun, Mersin and Antalya provides great ease of marine travel. The naturally protected harbour is a drop-by place for all yacht crews. Fethiye is also famous for paragliding from Baba Mountain nearby. The parachuters land the Olü Deniz ( Dead Sea). the best beach of Turkey. The area is also famous for carved tombs in the mountain. _________Sights Edit This Lycene Tombs Lycene Tombs S.M.Armstrong Fethiye is steeped in history with ancient Lycian and Roman sites. The Lycian civilisation left it's mark as carved rock tombs in Fethiye's cliffs and in the centre of town you can see the Roman Amphitheatre. Nearby the ghost town of Kaya Koy which was once home to the Greeks lays empty and is well worth a visit. The lovely Marina and water front area a hive of activity with sleek yachts, traditional Turkish Gulets and pleasure craft that mingle in Fethiye and around the 12 Islands of the bay. Tuesday see's the bustling weekly street market where the area's fresh produce can be seen in all its colourful glory. Of-course there are the stalls catering for the tourist with their "genuine" fake designer fashion clothes, leather items, lace and all the usual items but what is really nice is to sit under the shade of open air caf'e tent with a cool drink or a traditional Turkish coffee and just people watch! You will see the throng of tourist bargain hunters and the locals alike, all going about their morning at the large street market. As for me I'm off to get my beautiful vegetables and some fruit for my lunch at my holiday apartment, Marina View Apartment in Karagozlar. Another fresh produce market is located in the fish market in the centre of Fethiye. There you will see a range of both small and large sea and fresh water fish and seafood. A great tip is to buy some fresh fish from a stall holder and then ask one of the restaurants that fringe the fish market to prepare and cook it for you. The restaurants will do this, simply ask them how much to do this before you buy your fish and then sit back and watch them prepare it, cook it and serve with the usual salad and potatoes. The nearby of bay area of Karagozlar has an interesting and traditional boat building yard where parked up are nearly completed and finish traditional wooden Turkish (Gulets) boats. It is very interesting to see the various components, wooden hulls and sails that make up these very lovely ships. Karagozlar is a short walk from Palm Island along the Fethiye waterfront. The nearby beach of Olu Deniz is very famous as it is probably the most photographed beach in Turkey if not Europe. The beach can be seen in many of travel brochures and adverts for Turkey holidays. It's famous "Blue Lagoon" where the waters for bathing are absolutely beautiful. Olu Deniz is a short hop away by the Dolmus bus from Fehtiye. _________Day Trips Edit This Blue Cruise Tours - Fethiye to Olympos Turkey, Blue Cruise Fethiye to Olympos - 3 Night / 4 Days holiday package - available daily more details http://www.turkeytravelservice.com Contributors September 26, 2008 new by turkeytravelservice [Add Day Trip] Blue Cruise Fethiye to Olympos Edit This DAY 01 Departure from Fethiye (Fethiye harbour) Departure from Fethiye Harbour between 11 and 12 a.m. to Samanlik Bay for swimming & lunch or depending on the sea conditions to Butterfly Valley for lunch, a swim & optional visit of this natural reserve, hosting 136 kinds of different butterflies and moths.
