ed
Dusseldorf, better Duesseldorf, is one of the nicest towns in Germany. It is a handsome and elegant, modern city on the banks of the Rhine River. Düsseldorf is a city where everything is close together: just near the wellknown shoppingstreet Konigsalley is the Oudstad, the old quarter of the city. With its 260 cosy pubs and home-brew taverns it is well known as “the longest bar in the world”.

A little further on in your trip, you can find renewed proof that the citizens of Düsseldorf love to promenade, go for walks,: the traditional Nö has recently acquired a new companion promenade, which is even two kilometers long. Now that the new Rhine embankment tunnel has diverted the through traffic, the Altstadt has taken back its traditional place by the Rhine. While the traffic races along underground, strollers on the Rhine embankment promenade can admire the outlook over the Rhine and the art nouveau facades of Oberkassel. The view swings to the Rhine tower, which rises above the North Rhine-Westphalia government building. From a bird’s-eye perspective you can see the city, the countryside, the industrialized river. You can enjoy a romantic view of the city by exploring it from one of the many white pleasure steamers´of the "Weisse Flotte" (the "white fleet").

A trip northwards will take you to Kaiserswerth, following Barbarossa’s tracks to the medieval ruins of his castle, picturesque houses, idyllic places, in the typical Lower Rhine countryside.

The city parks provide a pleasant haven when your feet get weary. End your wanderings in Old Town (adjacent to downtown), which has been turned into a large open-air pedestrian mall with restaurants clubs and stores. Dusseldorf is also home to the largest Japanese population in Europe and boasts a number of excellent Japanese restaurants and shops and a striking Buddhist temple. There are several old castles and churches in the area. They can be visited as daytrips. Another very interesting daytrip can be made to Museum Insel Insel Hombroich.

Rheinuferpromenade Düsseldorf

Rheinuferpromenade Düsseldorf

reisetipp-duesseldorf.de
Dusseldorf offers its guests a lot to see: world famous museums like the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, jewels of baroque-style buildings like St. Andreas, the Burgplatz, which has received an award as one of the finest German squares from the post-war years, opens up to the Rhine with the old castle tower, within whose walls 2000 years of sailing romance are revived. Right next to it is the Radschlägerbrunnen and Düsseldorf’s symbolic city founder’s monument in the shadow of St. Lambertus, whose crooked, twisted tower still leads to speculations even today. Only a few steps away, Elector Jan Wellem greets you seated high on his horse in front of the old city hall.

Famous Germans were at home in Düsseldorf, as institutions like the Goethe-Museum (in Jägerhof Palace), the Heinrich-Heine-Institut, the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule remind us. Eighteen museums, the late-Baroque Benrath Palace, more than 20 theatres, the opera, many concert halls, about a hundred galleries and regular art exhibitions of international standing make Düsseldorf a major centre of art and culture. The museums in the Altstadt form what has been christened an "art axis" which runs parallel to the Rhine, making it easy for the city visitor to find the ones he is interested in. The Opera House, the Tonhalle (concert hall) and many theatres are also to be found within the city centre, tempting even the most impulsive of people to enjoy some culture.

Altstadt

The Altstadt has made Düsseldorf world-famous. But it's not just the tempting array of food and drink, which gives this picturesque quarter its special flavour; the Altstadt also has a few churches that are worth a visit.

There's the Neanderkirche (1683 - 87), the Bergerkirche (1683 - 87), the Kreuzherrenkirche - a 15th-century double-nave Gothic hall church – and St. Lambertus which dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest parish churches. Lovers of painting will be more than rewarded at this collection. The Kunstsammlung NRW is housed in an ultramodern gallery in Grabbeplatz. The collection began with an act of contrition: in atonement for the dismissal of Paul Klee from his professorship at the Düsseldorf Academy in the Nazi purges of 1933, around 90 of his works were bought by the city in 1960. Klee remains the big attraction, but later acquisitions have turned the museum into a who's who of modern painting.

The Kunstsammlung is now known as K20 (20th century art), since it opened an impressive home more..

In the south of Düsseldorf there is a very special sight: the important late-Baroque pleasure palace and park, unaltered original environment uniquely preserved. The castle was built over 200 years ago as a summer residence and hunting lodge for the Elector Karl Theodor. The unique ensemble of castle and park is one of the most significant of its type. Nicolas de Pigage built the castle between 1755 and 1773. The design of the chateau goes wonderfully well with its surrounding gardens and.

__________Getting Around
Edit This
Local Public Transport in dusseldorf and surrounding are run by the Rheinbahn. The Rheinbahn, operating the tram, bus and underground services in Düsseldorf, covers a network of over 1.400 km. The U-Bahn (underground) covers the distance from the main railwaystation to the Altstadt in just three minutes. Düsseldorf's incorporation in the Rhine-Ruhr Conurbation Transport Association (VRR) means that it shares a uniform fare scale with the other operators of the wider region. It also means that the Trade Fair Grounds and the Airport can be reached comfortably and quickly without traffic-jams. Information on the Rheinbahn's public transport routes Tel. +49 (0)211 5 82 28

The Rheinbahn offers interesting tram tours with various destinations such as a brewery tour (to the local altbier brewery schloesser, short guided tour included) a wine tour to the winehouse Lamm (with tasting on board) or a tour with a historic tram through the city centre. Reservation strictly recommended. For detailed information and reservation, see Rheinbahn Charter or send an email

St. Martin’s Evening
Edit This

November 10th remembers St. Martin, the Roman legionary who, as legend has it, shared his coat with a beggar who was cold. At nightfall, hundreds of children all over town join in torchlight processions, when the streets of the city are lit up by the usually home-made lanterns. Highlight of each procession is the sharing of the coat, enacted in a particularly impressive way in front of the town hall in the old town. As for the grown-ups, their special treat during these days is the traditional dinner of ‘Martinsgans’ (roast goose).

Torinthinis
Very unique museum where you can enjoy nature and art at the same time. There are no descriptions about the art they exhibit, and no fixed rule (historical order, categorization by area, year, etc.) for exhibition. You can also enjoy German farmer's traditional breakfast at the cafeteria free of charge!
