Street in Dubrovnik

Street in Dubrovnik

www.dubrovnikapartment-center.com
Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities on the Croatian coast. In the Middle Ages the Republic of Dubrovik was an important rival of Venice. Many buildings in the old city center testify of this glorious past and to its venetian influence.

The walls of Dubrovnik girdle a perfectly preserved complex of public and private, sacral and secular buildings representing all periods of the city’s history, beginning with its founding in the 7th century. Particular mention should be made of the city’s main street, Stradun, the Prince's Palace, the church of St Vlaho, the Cathedral, three large monasteries, the Custom's Office and the City Hall. The Republic of Dubrovnik was the centre of a separate political and territorial entity, and was proud of its culture, its achievements in commerce and especially of its freedom, preserved down so many tempestuous centuries.

Today, Dubrovnik is also a very lively city, with many things to do, both at day and night times. The coast nearby offers all sorts of activities and the town has many restaurants, bars and nightclubs. It has definitely been discovered by tourists, so be ready for the crowds, but you have to be a deeply jaded traveller not to appreciate it despite the crowds.

There are couple of great night clubs right next to the entrance to the old city, just remember that the buses stop running at about 2.38am.

If arriving by cruise ship, a popular way to visit Dubrovnik, be aware that there is no cruise terminal. There is very limited space in the harbour and therefore tenders from the ships have limited time and space to bring you ashore and return you to your ship.

The harbour is located around 20 metres from the main street and the Rectors Palace.

Whilst local currency is appreciated the Euro is widely accepted.

__________History

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik

f
Dubrovnik (or the official italian, latin and formarly english name since 1909 is “Ragusa”) is a historic city on the Adriatic coast in the extreme south of Croatia.
1918, when the City was incorporated into the then called “Kingdom of Yugoslavia” the name was officially changed from “Ragusa” to “Dubrovnik”
.
Dubrovnik is a city of a unique political and cultural history. It is a home to many remarkably poets, painters, mathematicans, physicists and other scholars…and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Adriatic-Sea coast.

1979, the historic centre of Dubrovnik has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

There are a lot of famous buildings like Duke`s Palace, a lot of museums, cloisters, churches and some very old buildings, like the Arboretum Trsteno, the oldest arboretum in the world built in 1492,or the third oldest pharmacy in Europe which date is going back to 1317.

The patron of the city is Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise). You can see statues and paintings of him around the city. The city`s cathedral is named after him “Saint Blaise”.
The habitants of Dubrovnik are even organizing a feast in honour of Saint Blaise every February 3??.
They celebrate these festivities with Mass, parades and they last several days.

The most important event in the cultural life of the city is the annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
It is a traditional festival where all doors are open for artists to entertain the habitans of Dubrovnik and their guests with games, theatre and concerts (classical & folk music) between 10th of July and 25th of August, since 1950.

The Dubrovnik Summer Festival has been awarded with its first Gold International Trophy for Quality in 2007 and it is signed in the calender of world festivals as one of the most famous cultural festivals in the world since 1956.

Dubrovnik has an international airport and a harbour of its own. The airport is located approx. 20km (12.5 mi) from Dubrovnik city center, near Cilipi.
Buses connect the airport with the main-bus-station in Dubrovnik. In addition, modern, local buses connects all Dubrovnik neighborhoods running frequently from dawn to midnight.

You have also, beside the interesting festival you shouldn`t miss, a lot of offered activities for younger and older generations, trips to numerous beautiful islands or to the holy place Medjugorje in Bosnia-Hercegovina or Montenegro, which is only an our away by bus.
If you want to, you can also make a one-day-trip to Makarska-Riviera or Split, which are 3-4 h away by car.

AND don`t miss a walk on the stonewall around Dubrovnik where you have phantastic views on the city, the Adriatic sea and some islands!!!

The climate is a typical Mediterranean one, with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers.

__________Getting Around
Edit This
The old city of Dubrovnik is really so small, walking is the only way to get around. Cars are not even allowed within the city walls.

Outside of the city walls, busses will get you relatively easy around. At daytime busses run every twenty minutes and a single fare cost about 1 dollar if bought from a new stand, slightly more if bought directly from the driver.

Taxis are expensive, figure about 10 dollars for a short ride.

Jadrolinija ferries

Many people take the ferry to Dubrovnik, which is probably more comfortable and more affordable than the bus. The largest Croatian company is Jadrolinija which has lines that hop from Rijeka to Zadar to Split, Hvar and then Dubrovnik throughout the year. There is also a good link to Italian ports (Bari and Ancona)if you want to cross over to Italy or v.v. For timetables and other booking information visit www.viamare.com

Apparently arriving at Dubrovnik by air is not the easiest thing in the world to do, nor the cheapest. One suggestion that seems to work very well, if coordinating separate tickets doesn't scare you, is to book a flight from your departure city to either London or Frankfurt. British Air, Lufthansa, and Croatia Airlines use these cities as hubs and it is rather difficult to get most American airlines to partner with them for easy ticketing. Separate booking, however, gives *much* more flexibility and often a lower price.

________Beaches
Edit This
Stikovica is a magical spot, fantastic scenery and the real deal compared to the touristic Dubrovnik. It's a small beach where the locals hang out, very friendly and welcoming and a great bar right on the beach. Not a wild spot, but somewhere to go if you feel like rubbing shoulders with the locals. The bar doubles as a restaurant as well and the french fish there is amazing and excellent value.

______Nightlife and Entertainment
Edit This
i

There are a lot of little bars and cafes scattered around the old town. Try to stay away from those places that are located on the main strips in the old town, their drinks are very expensive. Venture out in the side streets there are a few places I found on my trip to be great places where you can have a good time, enjoy good music, friendly atmosfere, and good drinks without gettin ripped off. Here are a couple of them: Fresh*, Caffe Bar Rio, Galleria, Trokadero.

Discos are usually located out of the city gates and if you are over the age of 18 I wouldn't reccommend even going. It is overly crowded filled with teenagers, you can cut the smoke with a knife and the music is so loud your ears ring for a week.

Irish Pub Gaffe
Edit This

Irish pub Gaffe has a potential to be a kool spot, but it needs staff to make it.

Current staff are plain rude. When I went to watch footie they advertised, they swithched channels mid way thru the game, and when I complained, a care free waiter explained: I dont give a f**k about england or english footbal.

I could not believe it.

We spent 3 nights in Dubrovnik but only found Fresh on our last night. It was a great place to end our trip and we are sorry that we didn't discover it earlier. It's a new cocktail bar with an awesome vibe and great music. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere is different than anywhere else we'd been. If you are looking for somewhere to drink gigantic beer and cocktail towers, and meet other travelers, you won't be disappointed.

It's a bit hard to find but worth it. Located just off Stradun (the main street) between Netcafe and OTP bank.

Becketts Irish Bar

This lovely little gem is located 10 mins outside the old town of Dubrovnik, and is a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the town and enjoy a pint. They have a large terrace and you can sit under a 100 year old olive tree and watch the world go by. And as they are outside the walled town they stay open much later. I watched the english FA cup final here and the atmosphere was electric. A good mix of tourists and locals, and the Irish owners were there to ensure good craic was had by all. Smashing pint of Guinness too.
