Mistaken
Identity
Having confirmed her place in history as one Australia's
most successful and popular singer/songwriters, Delta
Goodrem returns with her second studio album 'Mistaken
Identity' - the highly-anticipated follow-up to her 14 x
Platinum 2003 debut 'Innocent Eyes', which found its way
into over a million homes, and hearts, around the nation.
'Mistaken Identity' is available in both a standard
version and a beautifuly presented limited edition CD/DVD
package that includes the video for 'Out Of The Blue',
plus behind the scenes footage for the video shoot,
footage from Delta's recent European promotional tour,
behind the scenes footage of the making of 'Mistaken
Identity' and Delta's own track by track rundown of the
songs on the album.
Deeper and more intense than her debut, 'Mistaken
Identity' is the emotional and inspirational multi-layered
product of the past 12 months of Delta life. Every note,
every lyric and emotion has been placed on the album
precisely that way for a reason: plenty of outsiders have
told their side of Delta's story - this is hers.
"It's a more grown up album," Delta says.
"My music changed because my life had changed; the
whole world around me had changed. My music had to
reflect that."
The first single to be released from the album, 'Out Of
The Blue', debuted at #1 on the Australian charts and
instantly became the most added and most played song on
Australian radio. The gorgeous and uplifting song is just
one of several key tracks on the album co-written by
Delta and Guy Chambers - the British songwriter/producer
whose CV includes co-writes on most of Robbie Williams'
hits.
In addition to Chambers, other songwriters Delta co-wrote
with include Billy Mann on Mistaken Identity and Last
Night On Earth, Cathy Dennis (who co-wrote Innocent Eyes'
Throw It Away) on Sanctuary, Matthew Gerard (who wrote
Delta's second #1 Lost Without You) on the emotional Be
Strong, Gary Barlow and Elliot Kennedy (who co-wrote Not
Me Not I) and Delta's close friend Vince Pizzinga (co-author
of Innocent Eyes) on Extraordinary Day.
The album also includes her eagerly-anticipated first
duet, (Only) Almost Here, with former Westlife singer
Brian McFadden.
Overall, 'Mistaken Identity' is the ultimate statement on
the highs - and lows - of the last two years of Delta
Goodrem's life. Get ready to listen, learn and fall in
love with Delta all over again.

Mistaken Identity
MUSIC has always been there for the good times in Delta
Goodrem's life.
And it was music that was there yet again during the bad
times. Indeed, music was one of the main comforts for
Delta during the most testing period of her life.
Songs kept whizzing around in her head: melodies,
harmonies, lyrics - many deeper and darker than those
that helped her debut, Innocent Eyes, find its way into
over a million homes - and hearts - in Australia.
Her second album, Mistaken Identity, is the multi-layered
product of that well-documented year.
"It's a more grown up album," Delta, notes.
"My music changed because my life had changed; the
whole world around me had changed. My music had to
reflect that."
The childlike fantasies that fuelled Innocent Eyes were
replaced by a new and often harsh reality that provided
endless fuel for lyrical inspiration.
?Extraordinary Day' (July 8) freeze-frames the day Delta
was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma ("who would
have thought when chance came calling that this would be
my defining story"), ?The Analyst' captures the
hours of self-analysis the singer conducted ("trying
to make sense of her life, digging round in the dirt,
she's a slave to the work"), ?Be Strong' is a
rallying call for confidence while ?Mistaken Identity' is
Delta stating for the record exactly where her head is at.
"There are a lot of lyrics I wouldn't have used on
the first album," Delta admits.
"In ?Mistaken Identity' I sing 'I played the role of
the nice girl next door who gets cut like a knife', I
mention 'emotional suicide' in Electrical Storm: there's
some intense lyrics in there. It was an intense year. I
mean, it wouldn't be right if I didn't acknowledge what
went on; everyone knows what went on. I feel like I know
people personally - even though I don't, but I feel I had
to go into depth; get things out of the way, go through
the journey and end with ?You Are My Rock', which is a
thank you song."
Every note, every lyric and emotion has been placed on
the album precisely that way for a reason: plenty of
outsiders have told their side of Delta's story - this is
hers.
"There are dark songs on there like ?Extraordinary
Day', but if I'd brought out an album that was all happy
and had only songs about how great life was people would
think 'What is she talking about?' It wouldn't make any
sense.
"But while there are some intense tracks on there
it's still a very listenable record. There are some
really relaxed songs on there, some motivational songs
and there's some really heart-wrenching music that still
makes me cry when they come on. And there's songs that
make you want to get up and dance around. I think there's
a really nice mix. I'm really proud of the record."
It was a record whose gestation was completely different
to Innocent Eyes.
In those days, Delta would film Neighbours from early
morning to late at night, then zoom into a studio from 9pm
to 4am to get those songs out of her head and onto a CD.
This time around Delta had nothing but time. Her illness
and subsequent recovery cleared out a ridiculously busy
schedule. She could concentrate on her first love: music.
"This time around I had time to think 'What kind of
song do I want to create here?'," Delta says.
"I really felt the sky was the limit with this
record, you could do anything in a song. I didn't feel
limited at all. There were a lot more options, a lot more
paths I could go down, more directions I could choose.
"
One of the key changes in the songwriting personnel was
Delta meeting Guy Chambers; the British songwriter/producer
behind most of Robbie Williams' best songs. He's also
worked with everyone from Jewel to Charlotte Church to
Andrea Bocelli.
Chambers had been keeping an eye on Delta's career -
impressed with her songwriting skills and heartfelt
vocals. The partnership resulted in several of Mistaken
Identity's key tracks - including the No.1 hit ?Out Of
The Blue'.
"'It's really unusual to work with somebody so
talented, young, and brave. Who's not scared to take
risks and who has the most emotional voice in pop music,"
Chambers says. "You cannot help but believe every
word Delta sings."
"Guy's such a classy producer," Delta says.
"He was such an inspiration to work with. I felt we
had a really good connection on a musical level; he does
a lot of classical music as well. We tried to make sure
we found a sound together, to find what we could both
bring out of each other to create something unique and
special. Once we had ?Out Of The Blue' we knew we'd found
it and we took it from there and wrote ?Sanctuary' and
?Electric Storm'."
Other songwriters Delta co-wrote with include Billy Mann
on ?Mistaken Identity' and ?Last Night On Earth', Cathy
Dennis (who co-wrote Innocent Eyes' Throw It Away) on
?Sanctuary', Matthew Gerard (who wrote Delta's second No.1
Lost Without You) on the emotional ?Be Strong', Gary
Barlow and Elliot Kennedy (who co-wrote Not Me Not I) and
Delta's close friend Vince Pizzinga (co-author of
Innocent Eyes) on ?Extraordinary Day'.
"This album has more different colours and shades,
it's got more colours of me than the first album did,"
Delta says.
It also houses her first duet: (Only) ?Almost Here', with
former Westlife singer Brian McFadden. "I loved
singing that," Delta says. "It's a break-up
song where we're talking to each other - the girl's
saying when she's with him he's almost there and that's
not enough. I just loved that song. I think it's a really
important element to have on the record."
Overall, Mistaken Identity is the ultimate statement on
the highs - and lows - of the last two years of Delta
Goodrem's charmed life.
"There's a definite story in the tracklisting,"
Delta says. "I felt I had to be really honest. Songs
that people could still relate to but songs that also
confronted issues. This past chapter of my life has been
such an intense one and I wanted people to know my
thoughts."
Get ready to listen, learn and fall in love with Delta
all over again.
Innocent Eyes
It's just the beginning, is something that Delta Goodrem
says all the time. But what a beginning - Born To Try,
the first single from Delta's debut album, took the
Australian charts by storm, going to number one just
after Delta's 18th birthday. It stayed in the Top 5 for
more than three months, going triple platinum for sales
of more than 210,000 copies.
"I love how Born To Try connected with people,"
Delta says. "I've had all sorts of people come up to
me, from all age groups who tell me, 'I play this at home
all the time.'"
But Delta's right - it is just the beginning. Now she has
delivered Innocent Eyes, her stunning debut album. With a
voice that soars, this is a young pop discovery, brimming
with youthful zest, energy and innocence. And it's an
album full of surprises. As Delta sings in Running Away:
"Running away from predictable, Miss Reliable, so
methodical/Be individual, an original". This is no
manufactured star straight off the pop production line.
Delta's worked with a stellar cast, including the True
North production and songwriting team (Gary Barlow and
Eliot Kennedy), Ric Wake (the producer who has worked
with Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey),
Matthew Gerrard (Mandy Moore, BB Mak), Vince Pizzinga (Midnight
Oil, Danielle Spencer), David Nicholas (INXS, Elton John,
George), The Rembrandts and Mark Holden.
But this is Delta's story. She's forging her own path,
creating her own history. Much of Innocent Eyes sounds
like pages ripped from her diary. She wrote or co-wrote
nearly all the tracks. The album's striking opening line
is, "Doing everything that I believe in".
"Every song holds a significant memory" Delta
explains. "wanted to make an album that reflected
these times in my life".
Innocent Eyes is an album that heralds the arrival of a
major new talent. An artist who's doing things her way.
Grounded, focused and ambitious. "In my own time,"
Delta sings on one of Innocent Eyes' many standout
tracks, "it'll be mine."
"Do you remember when you were 15. And the kids at
school called you a fool. Because you took the chance to
dream?"
Delta Goodrem is no newcomer. She started in the
entertainment business at the age of seven, acting in TV
commercials and Australian television shows such as Hey
Dad, A Country Practice and Police Rescue. Delta loved
sports, particularly basketball and skiing, but music is
her passion so Delta saved her acting money to make a
demo CD.
At the age of 12, Delta recorded her demo CD, with five
songs she'd written. She included her version of the
Australian national anthem because she dreamed of one day
singing at a game for her football team - the Sydney
Swans. "Anyone's allowed to dream, I say,"
Delta says.
Delta sent the CD to the Swans and they sent it on to one
of the club's biggest supporters - the legendary
Australian manager Glenn Wheatley, the man who guided the
Little River Band and John Farnham to mega success.
Seeing a red and white envelope in his letterbox, Glenn
ripped open the package to find Delta's songs.
Over
the next two years, Glenn helped Delta develop her
career, before Sony signed her at the age of 15.
Inspired by everything from Silverchair to Incubus to
Jeff Buckley and "the Diva Girls" - Mariah and
Celine; at first, Delta struggled to find her own
direction. Then she discovered her mantra: Just have fun
and sing from the heart.
"No point in talking what you should have been. And
regretting the things that went on. Life's full of
mistakes, destinies and fate. Remove the clouds, look at
the bigger picture".
The title-track of Delta's debut album is her story.
"I really wanted a song with a bit of a classical
feel because I've been doing classical piano for 10
years," she explains. "This song is about
looking at the world with innocent eyes, that enthusiasm,
which I never want to lose."
In 2002, Delta landed a role on the Australian television
institution Neighbours, a show that started on air just a
few months after Delta was born. Playing the shy singing
schoolgirl Nina Tucker, Delta got to debut Born To Try on
the show. Though she's always getting into trouble for
singing on the set, Delta says, "Neighbours has been
fantastic."
Now, the girl who plays piano barefoot wants to take her
music to the world.
"I love performing. I do this so I can get up and
sing for people. It's a big world and there's so much to
work for. I do have a lot of goals. I want to take my
music to people and tell my story, perhaps one day be
singing at the Grammys and the Brits and the ARIAs. Just
world domination, I'm not asking for much." She
laughs, before adding: "It's just the beginning."
Delta smiles, those innocent eyes sparkling.
Track By Track - Innocent Eyes
BORN TO TRY
"Doing everything that I believe in"
There were lots of changes happening in my life when I
wrote Born To Try. I had just got the Neighbours job and
I was moving to Melbourne. Before I left, I had two days
songwriting with Audius, who came to my place. We wrote
three songs before Born To Try and we thought, "Do
we write one more or go for a swim?" Fortunately, we
wrote another song. I knew it was something special when
we wrote it. It was a song I simply loved singing.
Lyrically, it sums me up. I might not have been born to
win, I wasn't born to lose, I was born to give life a
good shot. Audius is such a special person. I hope we
work together again.
INNOCENT EYES
"I got lost in fantasies"
I wrote this with Vince Pizzinga, who I've been working
with for a long time. He's such a talented and beautiful
human being. I brought this to him and said, "I want
to do something a bit quirkier." The lyrics are
autobiographical. I was rehearsing to do a performance of
Born To Try and I looked up to see my mum crying. I said,
"Mum, what's wrong?" She said: "I'm just
so proud of you." Then I was performing in front of
thousands of people and I looked out to see that mum was
still there. She's always there for me. This is a song
for my family.
NOT ME, NOT I
"I won't cry, no, not me, not I"
This is one of my favorite songs on the album. An
autobiographical track, I wrote it after a relationship
breakup, my first heartbreak. I had a piano piece and I
took it to songwriter Kara DioGuardi. I was pretty upset
and Kara said, "You've got to write a song about it."
It's a song I love to sing because it's got such a
dynamic, real highs and lows. When I sing it, it makes me
feel much better!"
THROW IT AWAY
"You wouldn't know what love is if it hit you like a
rock"
I drove my record company crazy because I kept writing
new songs and adding them to the album ? they thought it
would never be finished! Then my A&R guy Michael came
to me with this song. I said, "If I'm not allowed to
put more songs on the album then you're not either!"
But this is such a great song. Gary Barlow and Eliot
Kennedy had written for me with Cathy Dennis, who was a
pop star in the '80s. Now she's a big songwriter ? she co-wrote
Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head. I don't mind
recording someone else's song, especially when it's
written for me and as long as it's good and it suits me
and my album. People hear Throw It Away and say, "That's
a Delta song", which is cool.
LOST WITHOUT YOU
"I know I can be a little stubborn sometimes"
My second single! When I heard this, I just fell in love
with it. It's not dark, but it's got a moodier feel to it.
It was written by Matthew Gerrard and Bridget Benenate.
Matthew has worked with Nick Carter and BB Mak, and he
also produced the track. A lot of artists wanted to
record this song, so I was lucky to get it. I love the
video. I made it in the UK. Someone asked if the opening
line, "I know I can be a little stubborn sometimes",
could be applied to me. "Maybe it can, but no more
than anyone else" she laughs.
PREDICTABLE
"I want you to know I know your game"
I can't wait to do this song live. The other tracks might
be "nice Delta", but this one is a bit tougher,
with more of an edge. This is another song I wrote with
Kara, who came to Australia to work with me. John Fields
produced it. He's great. He's very quirky and he's worked
with a lot of rock bands, so he knew how to create
something edgier.
BUTTERFLY
"Sometimes you just want to spread your wings and
fly"
I went to work with the True North team at their place in
Manchester. True North is a writing and production team
featuring Gary Barlow (who used to be in Take That),
Eliot Kennedy and Tim Woodcock. They're all amazing
people, really inspirational. To be able to work with
them was a real privilege. Butterfly was the first song
we did together. It was such a beautiful song - I
couldn't wait to record it.
IN MY OWN TIME
"So much is happening to me"
This is the song that got me out of my writer's block!
I'd been busy learning all my Neighbours scripts and I
hadn't been able to write a song in nearly three months.
This is a song about everything that was happening to me.
It started with the line: "My head is spinning
around and it's making me dizzy." There was so much
going on, but the song is about me realizing that you
can't force things - they will happen in their own time.
MY BIG MISTAKE
"Amazing fairytale that had come true"
This is another song I did with the True North team. The
album really picks up with this song because it's so up-tempo.
All the instruments are recorded live on the album, which
is great. True North got an orchestra in, which makes
this track come to life. Lyrically, it's not really about
me. That's one of the good things about co-writing - you
can let go of your own thing and take something else and
make it your own. That makes it really fun and
interesting.
THIS IS NOT ME
"Do I stand alone?"
This was one of the first songs I wrote for the album. It
came at a time when I was struggling to find my direction.
It's a song about taking a step back, having a look
around, and sticking to your guns. It's a really
significant song to me.
RUNNING AWAY
"Running away from predictable, Miss Reliable, so
methodical/Be individual, an original"
I can't wait to do this live with a band. We had so much
fun recording this track. This is the song on the album
where you get the hairbrush and sing in front of the
mirror - well, that's what I do, anyway! It's a bit of a
lighter lyric, but it's about growing up and not putting
any limitations on yourself.
A YEAR AGO TODAY
"You went away, a year ago today"
This is a very special track to me. It's dedicated to my
Aunty Sandra, who was such a wonderful influence in my
life. It's also about a very close friend's mum's passing.
I wrote this with Paul Wiltshire and Mark Holden, who's
been a big help to me.
LONGER
"If only we had just a minute longer"
You know those times when you see someone but only
briefly? It could turn out differently - if only you had
just a minute longer! I love the lyrics and when I hear
it, I can visualise all those moments when I thought if
only I had a little longer. This is another song I'm
really looking forward to performing live.
WILL YOU FALL FOR ME?
"My head's full of thoughts"
This is a song I've performed live a lot. I would play
this before doing Born To Try. I wrote it after meeting
someone. It's not me demanding, "Love me back!"
I'm just wondering: "Will you fall for me the way
I've fallen for you?" We also tried it with a full
band, but I think it works better done very simply, which
is why I produced it this way.
Lost Without You
March 2003
How do you follow up the biggest Australian single of the
past year?
With a song just as strong and just as captivating.
Delta Goodrem released 'Born To Try' two days after her
18th birthday. It entered the charts at number three. A
week later, it hit number two. Then, a week after that,
it reached number one.
'Born To Try' stayed in the Top 5 for three months, being
the most played song on Australian radio for more than
two months. It went on to go triple platinum, for sales
of more than 210,000 copies.
Now, Delta releases 'Lost Without You', the second single
from her upcoming debut album, Innocent Eyes.
"Built around an inescapable chorus that rivals
'Born To Try' in its anthemic, soaring nature, 'Lost
Without You' is mature, adult pop that will continue
Delta's connection with radio listeners young and old ...
a rich production carries this mid-tempo ballad whose
starring element is Delta's unfaltering voice that
reveals a true talent." (The Music Network - Feb '03)
'Lost Without You' is a song that showcases Delta's
compelling voice and piano playing. Delta says "I
love the track and I love the melody changes in it. It's
a bit darker than 'Born To Try', a bit moodier, and I
like that." Delta loves the video too, which she
made in England with director Katie Bell, who has worked
with Atomic Kitten, Liberty X and Emma Bunton.
'Lost Without You' comes with a striking lyric. Could the
opening line - "I know I can be a little stubborn
sometimes" - apply to Delta?
"Maybe it can, but no more than anyone else"
she laughs.
Born To Try
November 2002
Delta Goodrem was already working on her debut album when
the producers of the Ten Network's long-running nightly
program 'Neighbours' approached her to fill the role of
Nina Tucker.
Nina is the painfully shy new girl at Erinsborough High
who has an amazing voice but is too afraid to sing in
front of anyone. So she practices at night and finally
decides to record a demo of her song, 'Born To Try'.
Delta wrote the song with Selwyn's producer and co-writer
Audius after a frenzied one-day writing session at her
Sydney home. When the script called for Nina to record a
demo she presented the show's producers with 'Born To
Try'. "Everything fit, in terms of the music and the
lyrics, with what I'd heard they wanted to do with the
character," Delta explained.
The 17-year-old pianist, who has been writing for the
past five years, met Audius almost a year ago. "Audius
and I got on really, really well and someone at the
record company suggested we write together. He came out
to our house, mum made some lunch and we wrote four songs.
'Born To Try' was the last one. "We just naturally
clicked and there was no pressure so it was just music
for music's sake."
Delta's love of singing permeates her long days on the
Neighbours set, often to the amusement of the crew.
"I always gets into trouble from the audio people
for singing too much," she laughed. "I get told
to be quiet all the time."
Her nights are spent at the studio, recording the songs
which will feature on her debut album which will be
released in 2003. "The album changes every day. It's
kind of a process of elimination at the moment," she
said. "Juggling Neighbours and recording isn't a
problem because they are both so important to me and I
want to take the opportunities and the experience. "I'll
sleep next week."
Nina debuts 'Born To Try' on Neighbours on October 11 and
is released by Sony on November 11.
