Nueva Delhi India Asia

Qutub Minar

Qutub Minar

S. Basu

Delhi is the best tourist place in india. For many travellers, the first experiences in Delhi set the tone for their judgement of the city. Delhi is best known for tourist place as well as historical place.

Located on the banks of river Yamuna, Delhi consists of New Delhi (the national capital) and Old Delhi. It is home to over 15 million of people and India’s third largest city after Kolkata and Mumbai .
New Delhi was built by the British and that is reflected in its architecture. All roads in New Delhi lead to the India Gate which is a memorial to the unknown soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. Towards and along Janpath, you’ll see the international and 5star hotels, impressive buildings built to house the governmental departments, the foreign embassies and museums such as the famous National Museum and the Nehru Museum and also famous for the place Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah.
New Delhi is also the place where the new big international businesses are concentrated and extended spacious residential areas are located as contrasted with the swarming life in Old Delhi.

The southern parts of Delhi i.e. South and South West Delhi, are the most up-coming and prosperous areas in Delhi. The Qutub Minar and Siri Fort besides many a ancient monuments and Gumbads are there in South Delhi. The Humayun’s tomb which is adjacent to the South Delhi though is in the New Delhi area is very much there in Delhi. The wife of Humayun built the tomb for her husband and it is and it served as inspiration for the Taj Mahal in Agra that was built later. It can easily take up to four days when you want to see all the sights of Delhi.

Main market, near the Delhi railway station is the perfect example of this dualistic nature. On the one hand it is prepared for travellers and offering western life in a nutshell when it comes down to shops, pubs, royal accommodation and nightlife facilities. On the other hand, it still has its street vendors, beggars and pollution.

Old Delhi is over 2500 years old and was the captial city of the Mughal empire. It is dominated by the grand bazaar of Chandni Chowk and by the Jama Masjid which is the largest mosque in India. You will be impressed by the stillness of this place as soon as you leave the ant-hill of narrow streets, vendor stalls and rickshaws and carriages fighting for a place on the road behind. It offers some excellent views of the city as well. Another popular sight is the Old Red Fort that dominates the horizon with its minarets. Although it is in a rather neglected state, it still is an excellent place to wander around and breath in the atmosphere of the old emperor’s days.

Most people arrive at Delhi Airport that is still quite some distance away from Main Bazaar, the main budget accommodation area in New Delhi. Make sure you take the travel time in consideration when you have to catch a plane. It can be reached easily by taxi but roads can be very crowded during daytime. Delhi is connected perfectly to all other major cities in India and trains run pretty much on time. At the train station, there is a special office for foreigners upstairs to make reservations. The staff make is accurate, friendly and quick and this is certainly a smart idea when you’re planning to make one of these at-least-taking-twenty-hours train trips.

For traveling in Delhi though had created a furore in many a route and their commuters but gradually the same problem is being adhered to by different government agencies. The introduction of the Metro Rail is a dream come true for many a commuters for many a routes. Though it will take some more time to come out totally to save on the traveling times, but as on date the people in the city roads travel much faster than any other metropolitan city in India.

For any traveller to Delhi he can opt the Metro Rail to cover a lots of distance per day. The individual can board the metro rail from the India Railway's network at New Delhi or Delhi Railway station. One can visit Connaught place, Delhi University, Shahdara, Rohini, Dwarka, Chandni Chowk, Pragati Maidan, Karol Bagh, Raja Garden like central areas. In the near future the Delhites can commute from any part of Delhi to the other. Courtesy : Prasanta Varma, Delhi. Besides the Metro, the MRTS and other ways of commuting are coming to Delhi.

In New Delhi, you’ll see the overt remnants of the former colonial power. Wide streets, big squares, spacious parks and ornamental and bombastic governmental buildings. This is also the part of Delhi where you can visit Gandhi’s memorial. Old Delhi is quite the opposite. It makes you think you’ve ended up in a beehive. Small narrow alleys, little shops and a bustling daily life. This is also the area where you’ll find, amidst all the hectic daily practices, serenity and quietness when you enter the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque) and have a look over Delhi’s outskirts and visit the Red Fort. Besides that, there are several good museums and interesting sights dispersed over the rest of Delhi and its vicinity, such as the National Museum and Humayun’s Tomb.

The Lotus Temple is a spectacular and colourful sight. Visited by more than 4 million people annually, it recieves more visitors than the Taj Mahal. It is the main temple of the Bahai's in Delhi. Located in Kalkaji in the south of Delhi, it is lotus shaped and has rightly been given the name. It is open to all faiths and is an ideal place for meditation and obtaining peace and tranqillity. Justin : I visited the Lotus temple as part of a bus tour through town and I can't say I found it very 'genuine'. It is pretty colourful though...

The monument is located along the river Yamuna as an irregular octagon. The main entrance is the Lahori Gate, a former royal market. The Qutab Minar is a tall Mosque tower. The tower is 72.5 metres high. In front of the imposing structure is an iron pillar believed to have been built in the 5th century A.D. It's uniqueness lies in the fact that it has not caught rust ever since it was built. Tourists are not permitted to climb the tower. Justin : It's okay but not spectacular. _______Festivals in Delhi:

________Festivals in Delhi

Delhi's festival calendar begins with the Republic Day parade on 26th January. It is the most colorful of the city's festivals events and also the biggest crowd-puller. Hundreds of thousands people line the route from Rajpath to the Red Fort to watch the pageant of solders, camel crops, armored regiments, brass bands, folk dancers, school children, war veterans and elaborate floats representing the cultural diversity of India. The two hour long parade is usually rounded off with a much-awaited spectacular fly - passed presented by Air Force squadrons. A special display of folk dances also takes place at the Talkatora Stadium. Three days later the Beating of the Retreat takes place at Vijay Chowk. Various bands of the armed forces set the pace for marching troops against the grand backdrop of Rashtrapati Bhawan.

In a much lighter vein, winter also witnesses the Vintage Car Rally when the 'grand old ladies', sprucedup for the occasion, make the long haul from Delhi to Sohna. Winter is also the time for the popular Balloon Mela, the Surajkund Crafts Mela on the outskirts of Delhi, and Delhi Tourism's Gardens Festivals. The latter is a visual feast, for Delhi a blaze with flowers in the month of February Delhi Tourism also organizes cultural performances during the Garden Festivals.

Holi, the festivals of colors, marks the onset of spring. In August, the festival Janamashtami, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Ballets in the Kathak dance style depict the life of Lord Krishna.

In early October, a festival specific to Mehrauli, in Delhi, takes place. This the Phulwalon - Ki - Sair or the Flower sellers Procession, which originated in the 16th century. The highlight is a prossional of people carrying decorated floral fans, which are blessed at the shrine of the 13th -century Sufi saint, Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtyar Kaki and at the hindu temple of Jogmaya, both in Mehrauli. The procession ends with a formal ceremony at the Jahaz Mahal, a 16th - century pleasure resort by the side of a lake.

Also in October is Dussehra, commemorating the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king, Ravana. A month - long Ram Lila dance festival is organized by the Bhartiya Kala Kendra, depicting seens from the epic Ramayana, while on Dussehara evening itself, gigantic effigies of Ravana are set a fire. The biggest venue for this event is the Ram Lila ground, of Asaf Ali Road. Delhi Tourism organizes the popular Qutab Festival in October. Musicians and dancers performs at night by the city's 12th -century land mark, the Qutab Minar.

Diwali, the festivals of lights is preceded by several Diwali Melas, where food, handicrafts and a variety of earthern lamps and candles are sold. Large communities of Indians from different states reside in Delhi. As a result, regional festivals are also celebrated in the capital.

Delhi's bus system is for thrillseekers anthropologists and those with time on their hands. Buses are generally crowded and driven by maniacs. Avoid them altogether during rush hours; otherwise try boarding or leaving at the beginning or end of a route because there's more chance of a seat and less chance of being trampled to death. There are some seats reserved for women on the left-hand side of the bus.

There are plenty of metered yellow-and-black taxis but invariably the meters are out of date not working or the drivers will simply refuse to use them. Negotiate a fare before you set out. Auto-rickshaws are generally faster than taxis on short trips and cost half the price. Negotiate a fare before you board and make sure your will is in order. Six-seater motorcycle rickshaws run fixed routes at fixed prices and are good value during rush hours. Cycle rickshaws are banned from New Delhi itself but can be handy for travelling around 'Old' Delhi.

Although clubs and bars are multiplying in Delhi, you still have to look hard for them. Whenever you feel like dancing, the best option probably is to go to one of the big hotels that presumably has a private club and bar. It is quite likely that you end up watching a Hindi film or a traditional dance performance, finished off with a beer or lassi and an early night of sleep. After all, it's going to be a busy day again tomorrow.

On the other hand the night life had transformed so much in delhi over the recent years. So many lounge bars have come up in Delhi and they seem to be very popular amongst the people.Low seating and ambient music has become the trend setter.

Finally..delhites are transforming from clubbers to chillers!!!.

Pay attention: Delhi nightlife can be pretty unsafe.

This is the place to be seen. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the best day to go there. On Saturday come early, as u might have to wait to get in. Quite expensive, but good live bands that change every three months. Just recently they hosted even a great Latin band...

Edit This
Delhi's festival calendar begins with the Republic Day parade on 26th January.
