Another name for Wallachia is Vechiul Regat- The Old Kingdom, as its history indicates it as one of the first regions where royal dinasties set foot. It is part of Arges County, situated next to Pitesti, on the bank of river Arges. Arges is a river of Southern Romania, which rises from the Fagaras Mountains, in the Carpathians and flows into the Danube.It was known in antiquity as Argessos, Ardeiscus or Ordessus river. |

part of the Romanian Carpathians and it is also near to Transfagarasan
Highway. The Fagaras Mountains are a very popular hiking, trekking and
skiing destination in Romania. Population: 32.500(2004) In the town, you can visit the History Museum,which hosts some of the oldest artefacts in the history of the place, from antiquity to the First World War. Only 150 km away from Bucharest, near the Carpathians, Curtea de Arges has been the first capital of the country in 1330 and holds valuable art monuments, like a living museum of Romanian history. The Royal Church, built by Basarab royal family in the XVIth century is a classic Byzantine church, an art monument and a sample of medieval Romanian architecture. The first Romanian queen was Queen Elizabeth 1 (29 dec. 1843 - 18 feb. 1916), wife of King Carol I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Built in early 16th century, it is one of the most famous buildings in Romania, and stands in the grounds of a monastery, 1 1/2 m north of Curtea de Arges. One tablet records that the founder was Prince Neagoe Basarab ( 1512- 1521); another that Prince Ioan Radu completed the work in 1526; a third describes the repairs executed in 1681 by Prince Serban Cantacuzino; a fourth, the restoration, in 1804, by Joseph, the first bishop. Placed in a beautiful scenery, lies the lonely fortress built by Vlad Tepes, the fierce Romanian ruler that inspired many local legends and also the book of Bram Stoker. The fortress it is supposed to have been built by some treacherous noblemen for Vald Tepes' court, that tried to betray him. The area was inhabited by the argessenses, a Dacian tribe. The first documents to prove the existence of Curtea de Arges are dated from the 14th century A.D., when old maps ( such as Latinus Parisimus Code,1396) showed a small fortress called Argis. A very famous historical moment is that of the Posada battle, between the Romanian ruler, Basarab and the Hungarian soldiers of Carol Robert de Anjou. ___________Getting There Edit This by car Bucharest - Pitesti - Curtea de Arges: 150 km away from Bucharest and about 38 km from Pitesti. To get there, you only need two hours driving if you choose highway Bucharest-Pitesti (110 Km), and then follow the national road 7c (DN 7c), which connects Pitesti to Curtea de Arges. No matter if you have your own car or choose the public transportation, either from Bucharest (Autogara Militari) or Pitesti (Bascov Station). The public transportation is provided by private companies but there aren't always the best conditions you can get. Ramnicu Valcea - Curtea de Arges: about 40 km in about 40 minutes. At the exit from Ramnicul Valcea there are 2 options: follow the European Road 7 (E 7), to get Pitesti (60 km),or go dirrectly to Curtea de Arges, on national road 73c (DN 73c)- almost the same duration. ____________People Edit This Some of the famous people native from Curtea de Arges are: Urmuz, avant-garde short-story writer, born in the last half of the 19th century. Urmuz was the pen name of Demetru Dem. Demetrescu-Buzau ( March 17, 1883, Curtea de Arges— November 23, 1923, Bucharest), was a Romanian writer of absurdist and avant-garde prose. Also in the 19th century, Constantin Dobrescu-Arges, known as a politician, journalist, teacher and law specialist. Elisabeta Rizea (1912-2003), a woman from a small mountain village near Curtea de Arges, called Nucsoara. Her lifestory entered in the contemporary history books due to her courage and perseverence. This simple woman was a partisan who helped in the fight against communist terror and political oppression. She is one of the most famous Romanian women and an example of dedication and bravery.
