| Croatia Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Monument of Grgur Ninski in Split Monument of Grgur Ninski in Split Bozo Dujmovic Croatia is a beautiful small country situated on the Adriatic coast. It is first country in the world that offers to all visitors and tourist possibility of having free and comprehensive Croatia travel guide on mobile phone called mobiEXPLORE Croatia. It is available prior to your arrival in Croatia from official web site mobiexplore.com. You can search among plenty useful info about history, culture, gastro offer, accommodation and shopping offer, daily weather forecast and events in cities, interactive detail city maps with street indexes for easier search, audio guides for major attractions,...and much more. It is available like Flash application for symbiam phones and even over mobile portal (Wap) - in this second case you have to write in browser mxcroatia.com and use it online. If you have Flash compatible mobile phone you can download it and use more frequently. Besides its natural beauty, it also offers: a unique history, a unique mixture of cuisines, many internationally recognised hotels and helpful individuals. Zagreb is the capital of the country. It may not attract as many visitors as the coastal towns of Rijeka or Split or Zadar or Dubrovnik but is well worth a visit. There are many museums in town and at night there are lots of things going on. The Croatian coast is among the most beautiful in the world. It has unique cities like Split with its Diocletian palace or Dubrovnik which was the rival of Venice for centuries, great beaches and more than 1001 islands to choose from. By one hour ferry from Split, you can reach the island of Hvar - the sunniest island of the Adriatic, which has also been elected one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world by traveller (edition 1997). Don't forget a visit to Cavtat and the Koravle Valley. Cavtat is an ancient Epidaurum city just south of Dubrovnik, near the airport. Stone houses go up from the picturesque bay. A great place to base your trip to Croatia. Koravle Valley is rich in farming and folk culture. Sundays are a chance to visit the village of Cilipi, renowned for their traditional folk dances. Plitvice is Croatia's most famous National Park. Its many lakes and waterfalls are ideal for hiking or trekking around. The Dalmatia region is full of untouched nature and thousands of islands. The island of Ciovo is only 25 kilometers from Split and is connected with a bridge to Trogir, a small town under the protection of UNESCO. You might wish to visit this fantastic town, as many celebrities did before you (Bernie Ecclestone, Albert Grinaldi, Gwyneth Paltrow, Armani and many others). Don't forget Fazana and the islands of Brioni! Just a bit north of Pula... You may not see them on a map, but it was the summer home of Tito (his choice of all Yugoslavia) and farther back the Caesars during the Roman empire (even farther back, stone age man and before him dinosaurs. You can still see the footprints in stone!) Think about it... with all of Italy why choose to live here? From the later Stone Age period, there is material proof of the existence of a pre-Illyrian culture and civilisation in the area. In the older Bronze Age, there is evidence of Illyrian tribes. It is also the jumping-off point for exploration of the coast and islands of the beautiful Croatian Adriatic. The site was first settled when, at the end of the third century AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace here. The importance of Diocletian’s Palace far transcends local significance because of its level of preservation and the buildings of succeeding historical periods built within its walls, which today form the very heart of old Split. Split’s growth became particularly rapid in the 7th century, when the inhabitants of the destroyed Greek and Roman metropolis Salonae (present-day Solin) took refuge within its walls. The economy emerged from a mild recession in 2000 with tourism, banking, and public investments leading the way. Unemployment remains high, at about 18%, with structural factors slowing its decline. While macroeconomic stabilization has largely been achieved, structural reforms lag because of deep resistance on the part of the public and lack of strong support from politicians. Growth, while impressive at about 3% to 4% for the last several years, has been stimulated, in part, through high fiscal deficits and rapid credit growth. The EU accession process should accelerate fiscal and structural reform. GDP: purchasing power parity—$55.76 billion (2005 est.) GDP—real growth rate: 4% (2005 est.) Even on the clothed beaches in the area, it is common to see nude use. Brac is the highest and third largest island in the Adriatic. Pine forests, olive groves, and vineyards are plentiful. Traditional seaside pleasures are to be found in the numerous bays, on sandy and gravel beaches that form the long and well-indented coast of Brac. The beaches have something special, particularly the Zlatni Rat beach - their gravel promontory shifts from side to side as the wind and waves constantly change their shapes. Interesting note: The white stone of Brac has been used in many famous buildings, including the White House in Washington, DC. On the southern side of the island, near the village of Bol, world famous sandy beach "Zlatni Rat"( Golden Horn ) is located. In the near coves and bays many sandy and pebbled beaches can be found. One of the most known is Paklina FKK beach. It is located at the western end of the famous "Golden Horn". Snacks and drinks at the textile beach (approx. 200 meters). Both, the naturist and the textile beach are well attended in the high season. Naturist section is pebbled and if you like more private places, keep walking to the west where some nice small pebble and rocky coves can be found. Because of the winds, Bol is famous for windsurfing, so if you are a windsurfing fan, this could be the place for you. Other naturist beaches on the island can be found on the east coast, between Supetar and Sumartin. Along the coast between Postire and Sutivan villages, on the northern side of the Brac island, you can find dozens of small bays and coves with beautiful scenery and natural beaches. One of them, little and hidden cove called "Mutnik", not far from a small village Mirca, is reserved for naturist sunbathers and it is a genuine tourist diamond. It is easy accessible by car since there is a 23km long road between Postire and Sutivan. Nature hike or drive to its highest peak, Bokoj. The effort is rewarded by a stunning view of the Dinaric Alps to the east, and a myriad of tiny Kornati islands to the west. This is a tourist oasis of untouched beauty, full of history and wild mountain scenery, crisscrossed with donkey tracks. Vis produces some of the best olives, figs, almonds, lemons in Croatia, and can rival anywhere in the Mediterranean for it's tasty fish and lobster, prepared the same way as the ancient Vis fishermen used to do. There are also many vineyards (some of which were first planted by the Greeks as early as the 4th century), which produce some popular Croatian wine; Plavac is a strong heavy red and Vugava a rather rich white wine. Komiža - is the island's main fishing port, a compact and intimate town with a palm-fringed seafront on one side and a ring of mountains on the other. Dominating the southern end of the harbour is the Kastel, a stubby sixteenth-century fortress which now holds a Fishing Museum . Rearing up above KomiÏa to the southeast is Mount Hum , at 587m Vis 's highest point. There's a wonderful view of the Adriatic from the top, with the pale grey stripe of the Italian coastline far away to the west, and the mountains of the Croatian mainland to the east. From noon onwards (when the sun gets hot) some of the water particles being hurdled into the air vaporise putting a lid of mist on top of the valley making it a pleasant shade-like feeling to be there. Getting tired of relaxing on the sandy beach you can head out into the pool of water which is also covered by a sandy bottom. If you are up to it you can swim across the pool (notice how the water gets colder and colder), climb the rocks and jump. This is what the local teenagers do to impress one another (and perhaps the girls as well). The trade routes have gone through Neretva Valley since prehistoric time. Those who controlled the valley and its many robbers and pirates could control the trade for all of presentday Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Neretva River emerges beneath Zelengora Mountain in eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina. Through canyons, cliffs and hollows in its upper and middle courses, it forces its way through the Dinaric Alps to spread downstream of the village of Pocitelj in Hercegovina over a vast wetland valley and to flow through its large delta into the Adriatic Sea. Neretva is this largest river of the eastern part of the Adriatic Basin . It has been harnessed and controlled to a large extent by several hydroelectric power-plants and their storage lakes, but it still remains unique in its beauty and the diversity of its landscape. The Lower Neretva valley contains the largest and the most valuable remnants of the Mediterranean wetlands on the eastern Adriatic coast and one of the few areas of this kind remaining in Europe . The valley has a rich monumental heritage witnessing the presence of man in this area for thousands of years. Turning of wetland into fertile land and establishment of transportation routes to the hinterland created the conditions for the development of settlements. Many prehistorical fortifications and settlements are scattered on high and low grounds along the Neretva River . This area seems to have been inhabited by Illyrian tribes as far back as in the Iron Age. In the 4th century B.C., the Greeks founded an emporium (port) here, which developed into the well known market town Narona, today Vid near Metkovic. All over the delta around Narona there were suburbs and estates the remnants of which are now covered by the marsh and deposited sediments. Many monuments from the Roman time are present, too, such as city walls with towers, Roman villas, mosaics, epitaphs. The medieval monuments are few. During the Turkish invasion at the end of the 1400’s, several churches were destroyed and the memory of those times is kept alive by the fortress Norinska Kula situated at the mouth of the small Norin River into the Neretva River . Due to frequent wars in this area, no significant monuments from the time of the City/State of Venice have been left. Throughout history, Zadar was the center of important cultural events, such as the establishment of the first Croatian university (1396), the writing of the first Croatian novel (1536) and the publication of the first Croatian newspaper. The world famous Permanent Exhibition of Sacral Art and the traditional St. Donatus Musical Evenings represent only a small part of numerous cultural events and manifestations that Zadar offers to its visitors. The waterfront is an ideal place to admire a beautiful sunset or to visit its rich and colorful green fish markets, which are always bustling with life. Zadar region is also know for the nearby islands beginning with the largest: Pag, Dugi Otok, Ugljan, Pasman, leading to the smaller ones: Silba, Molat, Olib, Premuda, Iz, Vrgada, Sestrunj. ::::::::::: Zivogosce Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see photo Zivogosce-Natural beauties of olive groves and pine woods hovering over small pebbled beaches that are 6 km long, clean and unpolluted sea, all in the foothill of a big mountain (hilltop Sutvid – 1155 m) and all giving tourists a special lure and pleasure of stay. |
