Cornwall is the westernmost part of England. It is a beautiful peninsula where you will find dramatic countryside dotted with ancient stone walls and granite-built farmhouses framed against a colourful canvas of gorse and verdant countryside dropping sharply down rugged cliffs to the sea below. Sea is all around and there are many beach resort in Cornwall.

Derelict mine engine houses can be seen throughout the Cornish landscape from Land's End to Gunnislake. These are witnesses to a time when the hills echoed to the din of an industry which drove the industrial revolution, and once dominated the tin and copper markets of the world. Innovators Richard Trevithick, Humphrey Davy, Goldworthy Gurney and numerous others gave the world everything from the railway engine to the safety lamp at this glorious point in Cornish history.

On the A39 in North Cornwall and only 4 to 5 hours drive from London and the Midlands. Airports at Exeter Newquay and Bristol. One hour from the Eden Project in St Austell. Cornwall has miles of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and is great for surfers, walkers families and couples.

The Eden project, close to Mevagissey, is proof that not all millenium projects in England were as doomed as the Dome. This project would seem to have been an overwhelming success.

Put very briefly two huge domes were erected on what had previously been a china clay works and an imense work combining education and plants was started. However if you have even the slightest interest, you should go immediately to the website which gives some idea of the imagination, creativity and scope of the project.

Lost Gardens of Heligan Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see
These gardens were literally lost, after supplying all the food needs of the big house and a large amount of pleasure for many years. The gardeners left to serve in WW1 and did not return. The story of the reclamation of the gardens is told by a book entitled 'The Lost Gardens of Heligan,' prior reading of which contributes much to the enjoyment of a visit.

There are pleasure gardens, veg, gardens and an area aptly called 'the Jungle.' There is also a lovely walk along the adjacent valley and the home farm has been opened up for visits more recently.

heligan is near Megavissey but http://www.heligan.com/home/home.html will provide precise information.

Newquay, the surf Capital of England, witnessed this year its best surf ever recorded. People come from South Africa and Australia, surfers paradise, to ride on the 8 foot waves. Annual international surfing competitions are held here attracting thoudsands to come and see the likes of Kelly Slater in action. Every summer the population of Newquay increases by 20% due to its youthful, vibrant atmosphere attracting budding surfers down to its many hundreds of surfing lodges during the summer sun. Away from the sea, Newquay is vastly historical and the countryside of Cornwall is second to none. The best time to visit Newquay is most definitely during the summer but from a surfers point of view September-October is the time to catch the best waves. Hotels and lodges near the sea front are cheap and there are also many well equipped campsites within 500m of the sea. Newquays versatility is astounding and continues to amaze its many thousands of visitors each year.

Nothing whatsoever to do with that awful puzzle about the man with seven wives - that one is in Huntingdonshire. The one in Cornwall is an attractive seaside resort that has for many years been a haunt of artists. Now it is one of the very few places in England to have its own Tate Gallery. On both sides are fine stretches of coast.

You may well prefer this out of the main season because it does attract immense crowds.

St Just in Penwith is one of at least three St Justs in Cornwall. It's the most westerly town in England, historically geared to tin mines, as is much of north-west Cornwall.

As yet it has not fallen victim to the trend of so many English towns to look identical with the same shops. It has a number of 'real' shops, a post office and several pubs.

This is an area of granite churches and that of St Just is typical in some ways but it has the distinguishing feature of two medieval wall paintings, which were discovered when plaster was stripped during restoration works.

It is a great centre for a holiday with good bus services, beaches, cliff walks, prehistoric remains and fine churches readily accessible.

Prehistoric remains

Using a large scale Ordnance Survey map you should be able to find any or all of Carn Euny, Men-an-Toll, Chysauster, Bollawal Round Barrow, the Nine Maidens and Lanyon Quoit. There are a lot of other remains as well if you study the map carefully.

Zennor is a small village between St Ives and St Just in Penwith with a fine headland, a really good pub with imaginative and freshly prepared food and a church with a good sundial, an ancient font, a noted 'mermaid bench' and a squint.
