| Connecticut Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see One of Yale's impressive gateways One of Yale's impressive gateways Joseph Hollick Connecticut is located in the Northeast of the US and is one of the six states that make up New England. It borders New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It's a small state but with many attractions. Small New England towns that seem to have lagged behind a century or so dot the countryside. Connecticut has a variety of destinations including the beautiful Litchfield Hills, Housatonic River and Connecticut River Valley; cities with history such as Hartford, New Haven, Danbury, Mystic Seaport Museum and New London are important destinations. The Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley in northeastern Connecticut has been called "the last green valley" in the Boston-to-Washington megalopolis. Close to Hartford, Providence, and Worcester but far enough away to avoid urban sprawl, this 850 square mile region remains predominately rural. Roadways winding through rolling hills link the region’s many small towns, villages, farmlands and forests. Old mills dot the lowlands along the Quinebaug and Shetucket rivers and their tributaries. The park is best reached through Putnam. |

The town was founded in 1638, and became the first planned city in the United States, with a Nine-Square Grid Plan that has been recognized as a National Historic Planning Landmark by the AICP. The central "square" of the Nine Squares is the expansive and historic New Haven Green, which has not changed in appearance for centuries. New Haven is best known as one of the world's greatest seats of higher learning, as it has been home to Yale University for the past 300 years. The Green is a good starting point for seeing the sights. It is the town square and is surrounded by historic buildings. Form there it's a short walk to the Yale University campus with its many museums. The University Art Gallery is a must as is the University’s Center for British Art. The University’s Beinecke Rare Book Library is great as well. Vermont marble panels line the walls of the Beinecke Library and on the outside they appear almost white in color, however on the inside these panels are translucent and allow subdued light to come in (see two photos in Photo Section). A tour is recommended of Yale University as it allows you to see inside many buildings that otherwise you would not see. The hamburger is claimed to have been invented in New Haven at Louis Lunch in 1895. Normally at lunch time it is a half hour wait for it as they cook the hamburgers their way, on toast, but it is worth waiting to try this unique hamburger. The city is also known for its pizza, and has several of the oldest (and best-regarded) pizza parlors in the United States, which people travel to from hundreds of kilometers around. Since these are so popular, plan to wait up to 3 hours to receive your pizza. New Haven has several parks worth a visit: Lighthouse Point Park, a recreation area and nature preserve along Long Island Sound, and East Rock Park and West Rock Ridge State Park, which are two traprock ridge formations located in city neighborhoods about a 10 minute drive from the downtown. New Haven is also a unique place to see theatre plays. Venues include the Yale Repertory Theater and the Long Wharf Theater (both in New Haven) and the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam (specializing in musicals, both new and revivals). |

Il Connecticut è uno dei 50 stati che compongono gli Stati Uniti d'America, situato sulla costa nord-orientale, nella regione del New England, è bagnato a Sud dall'oceano Atlantico e confina a nord col Massachusetts, a ovest con lo Stato di New York, e a est con il Rhode Island. La capitale è Hartford. La popolazione al 2000 risulta essere di 3.405.565 persone. Il nome dello stato deriva dal nome indiano del fiume omonimo, quinnitukq-ut che significa "Sul lungo fiume delle maree".
[modifica] StoriaIl territorio del Connecticut fu colonizzato dagli olandesi nel 1633 e successivamente divenne colonia inglese. Il Connecticut è stata una delle tredici colonie che nel 1776 dichiararono l'indipendenza dal dominio inglese e fu il quinto Stato a ratificare l'Unione il 9 gennaio 1788. Nel corso della storia, il Connecticut si distinse per la rigida e profonda tradizione puritana e per le sue rigide convinzioni indipendentiste e antischiaviste.
[modifica] GeografiaIl territorio, per lo più collinare, è ricco di foreste. La regione centrale è pianeggiante ed è costituita dalla valle del fiume Connecticut che attraversa lo stato in direzione nord-sud. Questa zona è la più favorevole all'agricoltura. Numerosi sono i laghi, tutti di origine glaciale. Le città più importanti, oltre alla capitale, sono New Haven, Bridgeport, New London, Norwalk, Stamford, Greenwich, Waterbury e Danbury.
[modifica] EconomiaIl Connecticut è lo stato più industrializzato dell'Unione, i settori più sviluppati sono meccanico, metallurgico, tessile e chimico. I principali prodotti agricoli sono cereali, tabacco, patate, ortaggi e frutta. Sviluppato è anche l'allevamento di bovini e pollame. Importante anche il turismo e il settore terziario, in particolare quello finanziario e assicurativo. Il reddito pro capite ammontava al 2002 a $42.706, il più alto degli Stati Uniti.

[modifica] Personaggi famosiCharles Goodyear, il celebre inventore, è nato a New Haven, la seconda città dello stato. Nella stessa città, nel periodo in cui il padre frequentava l'università di Yale, è nato il presidente americano George W. Bush. Il famoso scrittore Mark Twain, raggiunta la fama, si trasferì ad Hartford.
