Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Rafting the Arkansas River Rafting the Arkansas River www.lostpaddlerafting.com Colorado is surrounded by Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, and New Mexico in the western half of the United States. Colorado is known mostly for its outdoor activities, such as skiing, river rafting, and mountain biking. The people of Colorado are known for being extremely laid-back. Coloradans can be described as "cultured cowboys", both rugged and classy. Denver offers the hustle and bustle of a quickly growing city, however escape to the wilderness is less than an hour and a half away. City planners have also been careful to leave ample room for parks, greenways, and natural scenery throughout the city. There is even a kayaking course on the Platte River in the middle of downtown! Here is a little history for you...Colorado was first occupied by Ancestral Pueblo Indians from before the time of Christ until approximately 1299 AD. Colorado was then home to various Native American Indian tribes, such as the Utes, who are credited as being Colorado's oldest residents. The United States claimed the eastern part of the state in 1803 with the signing of the Louisiana Purchase. Mexico later ceded the rest of the territory in 1848. The present borders were established in 1850, however Colorado did not officially become a state until 1876. At this time, Colorado was a land full of fur traders, trappers, mountain men, and gold seekers. A darker side of Colorado history is recalled by the brutal massacre of Cheyenne Indians at Sand Creek, a deed perpetrated by the infamous "Crimson Parson", Colonel Chivington. Similar acts led to the removal of most of Colorado's native inhabitants, which results in the present day situation where only two small Indian reservations exist, in the soutwest corner of the state. In modern times, Colorado has boomed, becoming a very popular place for the outdoor crowd. Denver continues to mushroom and grow, while even the more remote cities and towns in rural areas are experiencing growth and expansion. If you are coming to Colorado, understand that the state is often divided into two parts - the "Front Range" and the "Western Slope." The Front Range is on the East side of the Continental Divide and has all the major cities (Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs) The Western Slope has most of the famous resort and ski towns (Aspen, Vail, Crested Butte, Durango, Telluride, Steamboat Springs and Glenwood Springs), ski areas and awesome mountain ranges. __________-Getting Around Edit This The best way to explore Colorado is by car. This is the fastest and most convenient way to get from city to city and to explore the backroads in the mountains. I-70 crosses the state from east to west and I-25 runs north and south. Both interstates run through the capital city of Denver. Denver's Regional Transportation Department (RTD) has buses that connect Denver to surrounding areas such as Boulder, Colorado Springs, and much more. RTD's SkyRide provides transportation from Denver International Airport (DIA) to destinations throughout the front range. In addition to buses, RTD operates several light rail lines throughout the city. For more information on RTDs services, schedules, and fares, visit their website at http://www.rtd-denver.com/ Traveling by train is not very popular in the United States, however there are railways connecting Denver to other major cities. There is also a special ski train that takes skiers from downtown Denver to Winter Park ski resort. __________Getting There Edit This Most people reach Colorado by air. It is possible to fly into Denver International Airport (DIA) or the Colorado Springs Airport. It is also possible to reach other towns, such as Aspen, by taking a commuter plane from DIA. However, this is usually rather expensive. Other means of reaching Colorado is by car, bus, or train. Union Station is the train station in downtown Denver. Greyhound runs shuttles from all over the USA, Canada, and Mexico to Colorado. _______Ski Resorts Edit This Colorado is home to some of the best skiing in the world. From world-class resorts such as Aspen and Vail, to locals favorites such as Mary Jane, you will find whatever you are looking for. The ski season usually starts in late October and lasts until mid-May, depending on snowfall. If you are interested in sharing the slopes with the rich and famous, head to Aspen, Beaver Creek, or Vail. Several celebrities own second homes there and spend part of the winter either on the slopes or in the expensive boutiques. However, Crested Butte and Telluride are quickly becoming the new hot spots, so if you want to catch them while they still possess a little of that small ski town charm you better hurry! The Summit Valley resorts, such as Copper Mountain, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Arapahoe Basin, offer a wide variety of terrain all within a 30 minute drive of each other. They can also be reached in about an hour and a half from Denver. For a fun-packed week of skiing in this area, it is a good idea to set up camp in the town of Dillon and then visit a different resort every day. One of my favorite resorts is Winter Park/Mary Jane. Winter Park is a great place for kids to learn how to ski because it is very family-oriented. It also is home to an extensive program that helps people with disabilites to hit the slopes too. For those with a little more experience, Mary Jane offers wonderful tree and mogul runs with heavenly powder and short lift lines. What more could you ask for? The closest resort to Denver is Loveland. For a quick drive (a little over 1 hour) and a relatively cheap lift ticket, this is the place for you. However, it might be worth the extra 30 minutes to an hour in the car to explore the resorts in Summit Valley or Winter Park. For those with plenty of time and a desire to find a ski town that is still somewhat untouched by the crowd, head to Steamboat Springs. Steamboat is an authentic cowboy town that still holds weekly rodeos in the summer. It is a 4 hour drive from Denver, but worth every minute. The slopes are uncrowded and are usually covered with incredible powder. The town is charming and will make you feel right at home. It is an ideal setting for a romantic getaway. _______Things to do Edit This Whitewater Rafting the Arkansas River Whitewater Rafting the Arkansas River Outdoor activities abound in the Rocky Mountain state. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Colorado offers a great environment to get out and play. One of the most popular past times is whitewater rafting. This is a sport that almost anyone can participate in under the direction of a qualified guide. Whether a beginner or a seasoned whitewater veteran, Colorado's rivers are diverse enough to offer something for everyone. The most popular river for whitewater rafting in Colorado is the Arkansas River. One of the states longest rivers, it travels over 110 miles through canyons and gorges before finally reaching the eastern plains of Colorado to continue its journey for an additional 1300 miles to the east. It is a natural geological feature whereby the earth around it has been eroded away over time resulting in rock formatons called monuments. Rim Rock Drive is 23 miles long and winds from the bottom, up to the top of Colorado National Monument, around the rim and back down again. The best way to see the park is to drive this road as there are numerous lookouts and places to stop to see the spectacular views. |
