L’ensemble presenterà al pubblico i brani tratti dalle colonne sonore più celebri composte dal musicista inglese (The Piano, The Libertine, Wonderland, Prospero’s Books) e una selezione di brani originali basati su partiture mozartiane, “Mozart 252”, compositore essenziale per la Michael Nyman Band sin dalla sua formazione. Infatti nel 1977, la Band, ancora sotto il nome di Campiello Band, in occasione del suo primo concerto nel foyer del National Theatre di Londra, eseguì il In Re Don Giovanni, uno dei classici di Nyman in cui le prime 16 battute dall’Aria del Catalogo del ‘Don Giovanni’ venivano smontate e riassemblate in una originale combinazione di musica classica occidentale, rock’n’roll e minimalismo. Da allora Nyman ha fatto spesso riferimento a Mozart nelle sue colonne sonore e nelle sue composizioni. Nel 2006 la BBC gli commissionò di raccogliere le sue composizioni basate proprio sulle musiche di Mozart per il 250° anniversario della sua nascita. Due anni dopo (di qui il titolo Mozart 252) con quel materiale Nyman ha registrato un album completamente orchestrato, che include gemme come In Re Don Giovanni e Revisiting The Don. Il corpo dell’opera Mozart 252 è composto da due temi principali. Il primo è quello della colonna sonora del film “Giochi nell’Acqua” (Drowning by Numbers, 1988) di Peter Greenaway, una "esplorazione" delle qualità ritmiche, melodiche e armoniche che Nyman trovò così misteriosamente attraenti nel lento movimento della ‘Sinfonia Concertante’ per violino e viola, che Greenaway volle come fonte dell’intera colonna sonora. Il secondo deriva dalle canzoni e dai duetti tratti da “Letters, Riddles and Writs” (1991), un film della BBC2 per il 200° anniversario della morte di Mozart, che ritraeva il compositore austriaco, interpretato dalla cantante Ute Lemper, nel suo letto di morte, mentre dirige un’immaginaria esecuzione de ‘Il Flauto Magico’ e riflette sulle sue disgrazie. I pensieri sulle sua problematica relazione con il padre sono illustrati in “O my dear Papa”, remake di ’O Isis und Osiris’, le sue difficoltà economiche vengono esposte in “Profit and Loss”, la tragedia di morire quando è al massimo della sua creatività trova echi in “I am an Unusual Thing” (che si serve dei testi di uno degli indovinelli composti da Mozart e distribuiti a Vienna durante il Carnevale del 1787). In ogni occasione Michael Nyman si è rivelato un compositore eminentemente concreto. Sicuramente non gli appartiene l’immagine del compositore dolorosamente chiuso nella sua torre d’avorio, lontano dalla realtà e costantemente immerso in astratte speculazioni. Piuttosto ha sempre rivelato una straordinaria disponibilità alla collaborazione, uno spiccato senso dell’humour, una fertile e ricercata immaginazione ed una innata capacità a rapportarsi con platee anche molto diverse. Quando Michael Nyman pubblica il saggio Experimental Music: Cage and Beyond (1974, ristampato nel 1999) non avrebbe mai pensato che il suo contributo sarebbe andato così “oltre”. Avverso all’ortodossia allora attuale del modernismo internazionale, nel 1964 Nyman abbandona la composizione, cui tornerà nel 1976, quando Harrison Birtwistle gli commissiona le musiche per una produzione de Il Campiello di Goldoni. Nyman mette insieme quella che definirà “la più rumorosa banda acustica da strada” che si possa immaginare: ribecche, tromboni medievali, cennamelle, banjo, grancassa e sassofono. Nyman continua a lavorare con la band del Campiello anche dopo la fine della produzione, modifica la line-up, aggiunge l’amplificazione, e cambia il nome in Michael Nyman Band. È questa l’officina nella quale Nyman forgia il suo stile compositivo, fatto di robuste melodie, ritmi flessibili ma decisi, ed esecuzioni d’ensemble ben articolate. Dopo più di trent’anni, la Michael Nyman Band continua a esibirsi in tutto il mondo davanti a platee gremite. Se i lavori scritti per la Michael Nyman Band rappresentano la parte principale della sua produzione, va ricordato che Nyman ha scritto musica per diversi tipi di ensemble, inclusi quelli di stampo più classico come l’orchestra sinfonica, il coro a cappella e il quartetto d’archi. Ha composto anche alcune opere teatrali - tra cui The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat (1986), Man and Boy: Dada (2002) e Love Counts (2005). Ha scritto musiche di scena per alcuni affermati coreografi, quali Siobhan Davies, Shobana Jeyasingh e Christopher Wheeldon. Nyman ha inoltre composto la musica per un gala di moda, per l’inaugurazione di un collegamento ferroviario ad alta velocità, per un gioco per computer. La notorietà presso il grande pubblico la raggiunge come compositore di colonne sonore, le più famose per Peter Greenaway (con cui collabora alla realizzazione di 11 film, tra cui Il Mistero dei Giardini di Compton House, 1982), Jane Campion (Lezioni di Piano, 1992), Neil Jordan (Fine di Una Storia, 1999) e Michael Winterbottom (4 film, tra cui Wonderland, 1999 e 9 Songs, 2004) e più recentemente Laurence Dunmore (The Libertine, 2005). Negli ultimi anni Nyman ha collaborato con Gidon Kremer, Hanif Kureishi e l’Orchestra Cinese di Singapore. I lavori principali del 2007 includono commissioni per il Coro e l’Orchestra Sinfonica della BBC, per il Programma Culturale della Great North Run, per la Biennale di Venezia e un concerto per violoncello per Nina Kotova. Ha recentemente composto la colonna sonora del film Never Forever di Gina Kim, uscito nel 2007. L’ultimo lavoro di Nyman è Eight Lust Songs, un brano per soprano e orchestra dedicato ai Sonetti Lussuriosi di Pietro Aretino. piccolo.stampa@piccoloteatromilano.it COMUNICATO STAMPA Ultimo appuntamento con la rassegna “Jazz al Piccolo”, lunedì 16 giugno al Teatro Studio La Civica Jazz Band diretta da Enrico Intra rende omaggio alle musiche di Nino Rota Si conclude l’edizione del decennale di una rassegna unica nel panorama nazionale quale Orchestra Senza Confini, che presenta l’ennesima produzione originale di questa stagione: il concerto dedicato a Nino Rota, centrato sull’esecuzione, in chiave jazzistica e per big band, di pagine non solo entrate nella storia musicale del ‘900, ma anche nella memoria collettiva. La musica scritta dal grande compositore italiano per i film di Federico Fellini e per tanti altri autori di cinema ha infatti caratterizzato le stesse pellicole a cui doveva dare un suono musicale, diventandone parte integrante e rafforzandone anche il contenuto poetico. Una musica che ha ispirato più volte i musicisti di tutto il mondo, rivelandosi particolarmente congeniale al pensiero jazzistico, con in più il pregio di essere duttile senza perdere mai la propria identità e riconoscibilità. La Civica Jazz Band porta dunque la musica di Rota all’interno del proprio mondo espressivo, aperto alle sollecitazioni di un vasto e molteplice universo sonoro, attraverso gli arrangiamenti e gli adattamenti di pezzi arcinoti realizzati da musicisti italiani contemporanei, in primo luogo da Roberto Rossi. Primo trombone della Civica Jazz band, il quarantacinquenne jazzista di Rimini è uno degli attuali punti di riferimento del trombone jazz europeo, uno strumentista di livello assoluto a cui nulla sembra precluso sul piano tecnico e che ha collaborato in una miriade di contesti musicali, affiancando i migliori musicisti italiani e molti grandi esponenti del jazz americano ed europeo. Il suo modo di suonare rivela una duttilità sorprendente, che lo porta a suonare con personalità in qualsiasi contesto stilistico, ivi compresa la musica di tradizione accademica. Maestro nell’uso delle sordine, Rossi è uno di quei musicisti capaci di affrontare il linguaggio del jazz con una visione a 360°, anche se predilige la dimensione espressiva del modern mainstream.
