Chiang Mai is named the "Rose of the North" for the abundance of flowers that thrive in the cooler mountain climate. The surrounding of the city is blessed with an outstanding beauty in nature. If you want to get away from busy Bangkok, but still want to stay in a big city with lots of things to do Chiang Mai is a very good choice. Thousands of Western expatriates made Chiang Mai their home, which fortunately brings the positive aspects of expat residents.

The local people themselves are an unforgettable part of Chiang Mai. Handicrafts of silk, silver and wood are timeless souvenirs for visitors from all over the globe. Along with all this, a wide variety of accommodations, restaurants and entertainment all help to make Chiang Mai one of Thailand's prime tourist attractions.

Perhaps the best thing about Chiang Mai for visitors is that with a small amount of research and effort it is easy to find great places outside of the city offering trekking, tours, and locations which are what Northern Thailand is really about. Doi Saket, Chiang Dao, Pai, Soppong, Mae Salong, Mae Hong Song, Chiang Saen and Mae Chaem are just a few of the gems awaiting the discerning traveller.

Wat Chedi Luang

Out of the Grey
Protected by the moats, the old city is filled with monuments that mark the course of change in the city's seven hundred year history. Generations have trod the narrow lanes that link the quiet neighborhoods to the temples and the markets. Chiang Mai has over 300 temples making it an impressive place to be. Along the main streets, trade has been the lifeblood of the city; but it is the spiritual and artistic striving focused at the temples that has given beat to city's enduring heart (see temples). In the distance you can see Wat Doi Suthep giving a nice setting for the now second biggest city of Thailand.

_______Things to do
Edit This
i

Elephants: The elephant camps and conservation centers in the north of Thailand are plentiful but also trekking on elephants is a popular activity, many do not know that the elephants suffer may from it.

Although the elephant is strong, its spine is weak and cannot take the strain of the heavy elephant chairs and tourists over long hours. (which most tourist rides are not that hours long) An elephant takes a lot to feed such a large animal with a inefficient digestive system so needs time to feed. So loving mahouts do not work long hours.

Adequate support beneath the chairs is needed and the use of ropes to bind the chair may also cause chaffing so check your elephant is not chaffed..

Whilst it is true that the only way that the domesticated elephants must be supported is through tourism, as logging is banned in Thailand, there are places available do not do this at the expense of the animals' welfare. So please make sure you use a responsible mahout.
One such place is Elephant Nature Park in Chiangmai, and the other, Boon Lott Elephant Sanctuary in Sukothai. Lamphang Elephant conservatory

So support the elephants through responsible tourism not be put off by fear tact acts. Because without your support they will suffer and only be left in zoos.
