Piegon Valley, Cappadocia

Piegon Valley, Cappadocia

Adil Soni

Cappadocia is one of the most exciting destinations in central Turkey, 200 km SE of Ankara. This is the region where the famous "fairy chimneys" are located . The Cappadocia valley was first filed with volcanic ashes 10 miilion years ago from a nearby Erciyes volcanic mountain. Most of the pictures you will see are covered with white rocks, like snow. Those are white ashes called tuffs in geology and those rocks were eroded by rain, wind and rivers in 10 million year and also some erosion was done by people where they dug houses and churces. It was a hiding place for early Christianty during 100 AD. In the area, there are about 2000 churces dug underground. The churces are very small, less than for 20 people.

Ürgüp- Göreme-Uçhisar have the best accommodation for exploring the area. The most spectacular sights are located within the triangle (Goreme). Urgüp and Goreme is the true heart of Cappadocia and if you want to see more than just the standard tour you should go there. You probably need at least 4-5 days to see the whole area. Recently there are several hot air ballons in the area surves for the tourist in the summer time and you should go up to air and enjoy the view, hovering or the valley and take lots of pictures.

Just south of the above mentioned towns the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli are extremely fascinating. Also make sure you visit Ihlara Valley while in the area. Ihlara Valley was first filled with Basalt lava flow from a nearby HasanDag volcanic Mountain and later erosion took place by the river and the whole valley is about 100 m deep due to erosion. The rocks in and around the valley was made by fractured basalts and those were easy to be eroded due to water and wind.

The area is also famous of its wine and Turkish carpets.

Pottery Workshop, Avanos

Pottery Workshop, Avanos

Adil Soni
Avanos is the pottery centre of Cappadocia. The city is set on the banks of the Kizilirmak, meaning the Red River. The river gets its name from the clay that it deposits - the caly that is used for the pottery Avanos is famous for.

The main street of town has numerous shops and workshops selling plain and decorated pots and plates and you can watch the potters at work using kick wheels, the design of which has remained unchanged for generations. Many of the workshops will encourage you to have a go yourself. Groups of tourists are shipped in the whole time and there are always a few people willing to give it a go - always good for a few laughs.

Avanos is a possible base for exploring Cappadocia with accommodation and services available at reasonable rates. Sights in town include the Caravanserai, a restored Han (travellers 'service station'), and the Ozkanak Underground city, a smaller version of those at Derinkuyu and Kaymakli.

One of the oldest settlements in the area, Çavusin is situated 2km from Göreme, on the Göreme - Avanos road. The Church of St. John the Baptist offers a panoramic view of the village. This church and its paintings date back to the 5th century, making the oldest church in the region. It had a large courtyard which is unusual for Cappadocia, this has been eroded away however.

Christian missionaries and communities once lived in the old Çavusin valley, now in ruins. There are 5 churches at Güllüdere, close to Çavusin. The Haçli Church (with the Cross), near the valley, was also used for defense against the Arab raiders.

Centre of Cappadocia and one of the best starting points for seeing the fairy chimneys in the area. The famous fairy chimneys are unique rock formations made of soft volcanic ashes, called tuffs, and the chimneys are made by erosions of rain and wind and formed the present shapes. Centuries and centuries people have lived and worked in these chimneys and today you can see their churches with their painted walls, their houses, hotel, restaurants, discos, wine factories and even carpet shops.

Goreme has decent accommodation, restaurants and many, many tour organizations that take you past the most important sights in a mini-bus. They are well organized and if you don't mind stopping in a pottery and or carpet shop, they are quite a convenient way to do the sights. Goreme is also famous of its wine. As you all know the best wineyards are grown in sandstone where the volvanis ashes provides the best sandstone to grown wineyards.

The sights not to miss include the Goreme Museum, The Ihlara Valley and Zelve. Allow some time to see the underground city of Derinkuyu as well.

All though there are fairy chimenys all over the place, it is still worth while to walk to the museum, just 2 km out of the centre. It's a nicely packaged instant version of what the whole area has to offer and it's a good place to start.

When arrive you find the buckle church on your left, one of the finest examples of frescoes in the area. Entrance is included when you buy your ticket at the main gate so you'll probably end up visiting it on the way out of the museum. The museum highlights the remains of a monastic community who made their home in this valley. Most people are struck by the frescoes and the quality of these varies from excellent to very tatty. The Karanli church (recently restored and with the freshest frescoes) is not included in the price and will cost you an extra $5 or so.

Hacibektas Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see

A Cappadocia-visit should also include a visit in the town of Hacibektas. The town is located nearly 1 hour's drive from Nevsehir. You take a local minibus or midibus from Nevsehir. By travelling northwards via the town of Gulsehir you arrive in Hacibektas.

Approximately one fourth of the people in Turkey belong to Alawi-Islam and Haci Bektas Veli is one of the leading personalities of this sect. Without a visit in Hacibektas, it is difficult to get a full picture of Turkey. In the present day world where we search for dialogue between the religions, it is probable that a key to this dialogue will show itself in Hacibektas. Alawi-bektasi sect of Islam is based mainly on the ideology of having the humanbeings in the center of all and with its simplistic ( and easy-to-understand) philosophy, it propogates for beeing a good person with a proper life.

In Hacibektas-town, I would suggest you visit two places:

1) Hacibektas Museum, which is the monestary where the pupils of Alawi-Bektasi sect were trained. There you find different section of the monestary with amongst others the kitchen and the tomb of Haci Bektas Veli.

2) By driving few minutes from the town center , you come to a type of open-air museum with an amphi-theatre and a "cilehane". "Cilehane" is a small cave and if you can pass through the small hole, this means that you are free from your sins. I could not manage this, possibly because I had a thick coat on me!

In the Culture Center of the town, you also may join at certain periods SEMA-performances, which is the Alawis' traditional dances.

Vertical Fractured Basalts and Ihlara Valley.

Vertical Fractured Basalts and Ihlara Valley.

Sezgin Aytuna
The Ihlara valley is number one in Cappadocia when it comes to spectacular scenery. It's removed a little from the rest of the Cappadocian sites it can be a little tricky to get to but it's worth a full day if you can spare one. Ihlara Valley is 100 km SW of Cappadocia. It is best to see the underground city (sakli kent) first coming from Cappodica to see the Ihlara Valley.

The gorge is 16 km long and both sides are lined with rock carved churches, about 100 in all. You can look at the more important of these in a couple of hours but it's very pleasant to spend an afternoon following the river down the valley and exploring on your own. The gorge was carved in basalt columns (as seen in the picture) by the river. It is the best hiding places during early Christianity when the religion was prohibited by the Romans, in the valley each hole is either a church or a house.

The climb down to and especially up from the gorge can be demanding and probably shouldn't be attempted if you're feeling frail. To make the most of your time here a full day and a picnic is a good idea and will repay the effort in terms of a relaxed days pottering about admiring the churches and the valley's beautiful scenery.

Home to the famous (in Cappadocia) "castle". One of the highest peaks in Cappadocia, it offers amazing views after climbing many steps. It's popular at sunrise and sunset. Also, Maisons de Cappadoce is a very nice little hotel in town. Check out Elai (or Ulai?) for lunch or dinner.

Cappodocia Valley filled with tuffs.

Urgup is a convenient starting place to explore the region. Many tour operators offer daytours that show you all the highlights, including a visit to a carpet shop and a pottery bakery. The town has interesting hotels carved in tuffs where the temperature always stays same, 22C degrees in cold winters or hot summers. The area is famous for its wineyards and wine factory. In the area, take a tour with a hot air ballon and enjoy the view at an altidude of 100-200m and watch the interesting ferry chimneys and facinating geology. The whole area is covered by tuffs from the volcanic mountain ashes of Erciyes, nearby.

:::::::::::::Zelve Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see
The Zelve monastery complex is situated about 10 km out from Goreme on the road to Avanos. Although the churches here lack the elaborate frescoes of Goreme and other sites there's still plenty here to see. The series of valleys can provide you with a couple of hours walking, climbing and crawling about and in addition to the marked highlights (the Fish and Grape churches) there are innumerable rooms and passages to look at.

Zelve was inhabited until quite recently but you can almost see the place crumbling before your very eyes. There's probably an element of risk involved in exploring too enthusiastically but a guide should be able to balance the thrill of stumbling through pitch black tunnels by torchlight with an element of safety.
