| Canberra Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Parliament House Parliament House Ben Hart Canberra is Australia's federal capital. Established as part of Australia's federation in 1901, Canberra houses the national parliament, federal government departments, the High Court of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, and several other important institutions. Canberra is comprised of five large "town centres" that lie in the valleys of the Canberra region. These are Central Canberra, Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan (actually in New South Wales). For tourists, Central Canberra is the only major area of interest, but the presence of the other centres will explain why the size of Canberra's population seems so out of proportion with it's low-built appearance. Also, visitors interested in obtaining pornography illegal in other states may want to visit Fishwyck, a suburb of Canberra. These other centres are also en route to local wilderness from central Canberra. Canberra is very different from most Australian capital cities. Firstly, it is relatively young (established ~1927) and secondly, it's planned development has excluded the presence of buiildings on any surrounding hilltops, or that are over fifteen stories high. Thus visitor's may be slightly under-awed by Canberra, but don't just turn around. Explore the sites and appreciate the presence of so much wilderness within a city. You will realise that Canberra is a great place to explore, relax, and learn. It's also fun to note that the 'mall' running between the War Memorial and Parliament looks familiar. This is because much of Canberra was designed by a US Architect and the mall in Canberra is reminicent of the mall in Washington DC, specifically the reflecting pool between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. __________Sights Edit This Telstra Tower behind Captain Cooks water-jet in Lake Burley Griffin Telstra Tower behind Captain Cooks water-jet in Lake Burley Griffin unknown Canberra, the nation’s capital and also better known as a city ‘scattered through a park’, offers besides a lot of greenness and lakes, also some interesting sights, monuments and museums. Stroll through the city and have a look at some impressive historical and architectural buildings, such as the High Court and the Old Parliament House. For those who want to spot rare birds, it might be a good idea to plan a daytrip to the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (+02 6205 1233) that is only some kilometres away from the city centre of Canberra. The reason was simple - it was roughly halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, the two largest population centers in Australia. The Australian Capital Territory came to be, along with the Federation of Australia in 1913. The city was named Canberra since the word Canberra means, "meeting place" in the language of the local aboriginal people (the Camberri or Kamberra). Work finished almost immediately to devise an overall plan for the city. An international competition was held, and won by an young American architect Walter Burley-Griffin. Griffin's plan was to establish Canberra as a collection of local "town centers" placed amongst the hills of the region, and connected by convenient routes. The design of central Canberra also focussed strongly on interconnecting circles Although Burley-Griffin imagined Canberra as a city designed about the future use of automobiles, a driver has had reason to curse him for constructing roads that can so easily confound ones natural sense of direction! Burley-Griffin's plan also called for an artificial lake (which now bears his name),the plans for parliament was not to stay there for a long time it was a temporary parliament From the original centuries of Canberra, Belconnen and Woden, the city now extends south into the Tuggeranong Valley and east into New South Wales and the town of Queanbeyan. Aside from Federal Parliament and it's associated departments, the city has benefited from the establishment of the Australian National University in 1945, the Australian Defence Force Academy, the National Gallery, and several other institutions. __________Getting Around Edit This The airport is 7km (4mi) south-east of the city centre. You can get a shutttle minibus to the Jolimont Centre in town and to various hotels for about $5 or catch a cab to the city for about $7. Public transport in Canberra means the Action bus - the Australian Capital Territory Internal Omnibus Network! It's not much chop - services are rather sparse and practically non-existent on Sundays or after 10pm. You're much better off on a bicycle if you're energetic (Canberra has an excellent network of bike paths which allow you to avoid the traffic pretty much anywhere you're going) or if you're not with a car. _________Getting There Edit This By Road Canberra is located several hundred kilometers inland, on a line roughly between Sydney and Melbourne. Thus it is easily reached by the main highway between Australia' two largest cities, the Hume Highway. The trip takes about 3 hrs from Sydney (take the left exit onto the Federal Highway after Goulburn) or about 6 1/2 from Melbourne (take the right exit onto the Barton Highway after Yass). If you don't have your own car you can buy a ticket on one of the main coach companies, either Greyhound or Murrays. I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST HITCHING. Yes, many people do it, but even in friendly Australia there are bad people and plenty of lonely roads. Those considering hitching should read about the case of Ivan Milat and the infamous backpacker murders (he picked up his victims on the Hume Highway, including several couples, before driving to a nearby state forest to murder them). By Air Canberra International Airport is International in name but not in nature (the designation is mainly used to allow foreign dignitaries to fly to Canberra direct if necessary). However, the flights between Canberra to/from Sydney and Melbourne are frequent and relatively cheap. A ticket on the "Airport Shuttle" between Sydney and Canberra is $A 100, and it departs on the hour. By Rail Canberra is accessible by train from Sydney and Melbourne, as well as a range of regional towns. The journey is slower than the bus, but a little cheaper and a lot more comfortable. As a final note, the Airport, train station and coach depot are all in different suburbs of Canberra, which can be rather annoying. The Airport is about 10 minutes drive east of the city center (Civic). The coach depot, called the Jolimont Centre, is in the city itself, while the train station is south-east of Parliament House, across the lake from the centre of the city. If you intend to stay in South Canberra, the train station will generally be closer. If you are staying in Northern Canberra (at the YHA for instance) the Coach depot is closer. From the airport it makes little difference. At any rate, none of these places is more than 15 minutes away by taxi. __________Museums Edit This National Gallery of Australia. www.nga.gov.au see website for current exhibitions. good exhibitions in the past have included, Viviene Westwood, Bill viola, National sculpture Prize and more. _______Nightlife and Entertainment Edit This i Display all or display just: Bars & Cafes Casinos Clubs and dancing Dancing Show best rated on top | Show in alphabetical order [Add Entertainment place] Blue Gum Cafe Edit This type: Bars & Cafes World66 rating: [rate it] address: 71 Northbourne Ave tel: (02) 6247 2414 The Gods Cafe & Bar Edit This type: Bars & Cafes World66 rating: [rate it] address: University Ave tel: (02) 6248 5538 Indo Cafe Edit This type: Bars & Cafes World66 rating: [rate it] address: Ground Flr Waldorf Apartments London tel: (02) 6248 7701 Loui Edit This type: Bars & Cafes World66 rating: [rate it] address: 111 Alinga St tel: (02) 6230 0626 Toast Edit This Toast has it all - pool tables, live bands, DJs and a generally great atmosphere in the centre of town.
