Cadiz Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see photo On the southern tip of Spain the port city of Cadiz (pronounced CA-deeth) has been active since the days of the Roman Empire when its dancers were famous throughout the Mediterranean region. It is one of the oldest settlements in Spain, founded in around 1100 BC. Its most prosperous era was in the 18th century and inner Cadiz, built on a peninsula, displays the beautiful architecture of this period. |

| This area has a fascinating atmosphere about it with its narrow alleyways,
back streets, open squares and spectacular churches - all close to the
immense blue waters of the Cadiz Bay. The town itself is relaxed and not at
all intimidating, like some port towns can be. Cadiz also boasts the
liveliest Carnival celebration in Spain (with the possible exception of
Tenerife in the Canary Islands). Today the city (pop. 154 000) is also a
departure point for ferry boats to the Canary Islands ___________Sights Edit This Museo de Bellas Artes (at Plaza de Mina 5, across from the Tourismo-closed Mondays) displays interesting and rare paintings of saints by Francisco Zurbaran. His depiction of the saints are both powerful and introspective, as his models were often monks, draped in shadows, that he met during his travels through the monasteries of Spain. The museum also contains an impressive archeological exhibit of Cadiz’ ancient past. It contains the few Carthaginian artefacts the Romans did not destroy. The sea walls and the waterside walkways are strikingly beautiful, and a wonderful place to stroll for sunrise or sunset. The big ficus trees can not be overlooked. The Catedral Nueva is an enormous, crumbling 18th century high-baroque is perfectly proportionate and is worth a visit, as is it's tower. The old cathedral, Santa Cruza is also worth a look. There are three frescoes by Goya in the 18th century chapel called Santa Cueva. __________Getting Around Edit This getting around Cadiz Contributors October 20, 2006 new by euroadventures [Add Local transport mode] Private Driver Chauffeur Shore Excursions from Cadiz Edit This If Cadiz is on your itinerary for a stop during your cruise around Spain why not have a private English-speaking chauffeur at your disposal to take you around Cadiz or on an excursion to nearby cities. It sank into oblivion under the Visigoths and Moors, but attained great splendor in the early 16th century as a launching point for the journey to the newly discovered lands of America.
