Brighton Pavillion

Hans-Peter Harmsen
Located on the southern coast of England, almost directly south from London, Brighton has also been called "London By The Sea". Brighton is easy to get to being served by the M25/M23 motorways from the North and the M27 from East to West. There are also fast and regular trains to London and Gatwick international airport is 40 minutes away up the M23.

Made popular by the Victorians in the 1800s due to their fixation with dips in the sea, it has grown from its humble fishing village origins into a vibrant, multi-cultural hub that seems to have that knack of converting many of its temporary visitors into fully fledged inhabitants. Its two universities and many English language colleges ensure that foreign languages are commonly overheard when out and about, especially during the summer months. The universities also provide a steady supply of new youthful inhabitants for the city, which influences many of the services available. Brighton has many places to visit for the tourist. Apart from the beautifully preserved royal palace built by George IV, The Royal Pavilion (& Brighton Museum, Corn Exchange, Dome and Pavilion Theatre located at the same site), right in the centre of the city there are The Lanes (for the tourists) and The North Laine (for the young trendy locals).

Music is a vital part of the cultural scene in Brighton, which has many nightclubs catering for all tastes when it comes to dancing. However, the live music scene is also alive and well with several bands originating from the Brighton area having gone on to have commercial success in recent years. Venues to check out first of all are the Concorde II on the seafront east of the Palace Pier (now known as the Brighton Pier) and the Freebutt which is close to St Peter's Church (the cathedral-like building in the centre of Brighton which is east of Brighton station). Brighton now has its own college dedicated to music in the Brighton Institute of Modern Music (or BIMM for short), so expect to see a growing list of bands making it from the Brighton area. Apart from music, the broader arts scene is very strong with several well-established theatres in Brighton and many more experimental and avant garde productions staged at further venues. The internationally renowned Brighton Festival (and related Brighton Festival Fringe) held in May every year, provides a focus for the entire arts community in Brighton. In addition to the many artists and sculptors who inhabit Brighton (Julie-Anne Gilburt's studio on the beach front, east of the Brighton Pier is well worth a visit), video and film production also thrives. The Brighton Film School has established itself as an independent and respected provider of courses for budding film makers, as well as providing services to visiting film crews using Brighton as their back drop. Over the past 10 years the beach promenade has been transformed into a bright and bustling pedestrian-friendly space with lots of arty boutiques, trendy cafés and eateries, as well as an array of bars and nightspots providing dancing and music well into the night. Brighton manages to cater for visitors and locals in equal measure and is well worth a visit - you never know, you just might decide to stay!

George, the Prince of Wales and Prince Regent (he became King George IV) and his morganatic wife, bought a small farm house in what was then the village of Brighthelmstone. "Prinny's" penchant for sea bathing helped to transform this small rural community into a mecca of high society.

Over a period of nearly fifty years, from 1783 (when he was only 21) to his death in 1830, George transformed the simple home. First, the farmhouse was incorporated into the Marine Pavilion. In 1803, William Porden built the huge Royal Stables in the Indian style, which soon dwarfed more..

The Piers
Edit This

Apart from the Pavilion, the other infamous image of Brighton is the Pier, specifically the broken one (the West Pier). Ravaged by storms, and more lately, fires, it is simply a shell falling progressively into the sea - although it looks rather more elegant reduced to its iron skeleton than it ever did as a crumbling, decaying wreck. I'm not sure where the millions of starlings that formerly inhabited the structure live now, mind. The other pier (the Palace Pier), a mile or so to the east, is intact, but has limited appeal. Made up of novelty shops, amusement arcades and more..

___________Nightlife and Entertainment
Edit This
The major attraction of the city is less in any particular "sight", more in the all-round entertainment Brighton provides - after the shopping and cafes in the day, an immense amount of restaurants and a strong variety of comedy, music and theatre are on offer, once again all within a half-mile or so of each other. Some of the best eateries are to be found in the Lanes and surrounding streets, although I'll resist suggesting specific venues - partly because there's such a variety of styles and settings that every person will have a different group of favourites, partly due to a major part of the enjoyment being wandering around seeking a feeding without really knowing what it is you're after.

Pub-wise, similar variety exists. There are the bigger, more generic chain affairs in West Street, the smaller, more unique establishments in and around the Lanes, and everything in between elsewhere - the Steine possesses a number of large pubs, while several glass-fronted bars line the route from the station to the seafront. Again, a great part of the fun is to be had searching out drinkeries for oneself, but the Smugglers, in Ship Street, and The Font, just into the Lanes off here, stand out for me as distinctive venues with exceptional atmosphere.

Clubs are less widely distributed - concentrated principally in West Street and the seafront. The latter are probably the best of the lot, but come at an increased price. Drinks, as ever, are ridiculously expensive in almost all of the venues - take advantage of the great number and quality of pubs and bars first.

As for non-alcoholic or food-based entertainment, the city is superbly well-stocked. The Komedia, in Gardner Street, hosts endless varied shows, which are invariably well-received, whilst the Dome is the venue for well-known theatre, stand-up and less mainstream music. The Brighton Centre, on the seafront at the foot of West Street sees most of the big-name bands and shows, and also acts as the usual home of the Brighton Bears basketball team. See respective websites for up-to-date details.

The Brighton Festival runs from May 7-29th, showcasing the city's enthusiasm and talent for the arts, making it a great time to visit.

Silk Road Bar Lounge Buffet

Silk Road Restaurant
Silk Road Turkish Mediterranean Restaurant, 8-10 Arcade Road, Littlehampton, West Sussex BN17 5AP. Tel: 01903 722055 www.thesilkroadrestaurant.net The Silk Road is a Turkish/Mediterranean Restaurant that creates delicious and freshly prepared authentic cuisine from chosen countries along the old Silk Road Caravan Route . A breathtaking interior of Persian Carpets, mosaics and rich velvets scattered amongst carved wood, brassware, wall murals and ceiling art are the backdrop for your taste experience. In the Sultan’s Palace Bar Lounge, you may choose an exclusive Cocktail, relax and absorb the atmosphere whilst reading the intoxicating menu of Mediterranean delights. Everything is presented beautifully – a different antique plate for each guest, together with old silver and bone handled cutlery – all laid upon woven table cloths that look like faded Turkish carpets. Weekend entertainment is just as unique as everything else at The Silk Road. It could be a Male or a Female Belly Dancer, a 6pcs Brazilian & Latin Jazz Band or a Honky-Tonk Steel Guitarist – to name but a few. Also available for Corporate Entertainment companies wishing to treat their clients, or their staff, to a fantastic night out with a wide variety of menus to suit every possible requirement. Capacity is around 60 seated/80 buffet style, leaving room for a dance floor! Altogether The Silk Road Restaurant is a memorable experience and also terrific value for money and whether you are looking for a quiet, romantic dinner for two in the week, or something more lively and exciting at the weekend, this Restaurant has to be your first choice. They have managed to create a reputation in Sussex that is proving very hard to follow.
