Black Church

Black Church

Mircea G.
Brasov is a charming town located in the geographical centre or Romania. Before the great Tartar invasion of 1241 Brasoc had already developed into a city. The earliest documentary data testify to the existence of Brasov in 1234, under the name of "Corona". During the feudal period, the nucleus of the town - the Citadel - was the centre of the handicraft and cultural administrative activities.

In the 15th and 16th centuries the aspect of Brasov must have been very much like that of any medieval town in the centre of Europe. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the aspect of the town began to resemble the one it has today, the buildings bearing the stamp of the Baroque or of the Viennese Rococo.

Brasov has always been an important cultural centre. It is in Scheii Brasov that the first school with tuition in Romanian was founded in 1495, and it was here too that Deacon Coresi printed the first book written in Romanian (the 16th century). Contemporary Brasov, with a population of about 400,000 is a busy industrial, shopping, tourist and cultural centre. The geographic position and natural beauty, the great variety of the scenery and its contrasting aspects, the numberless historic and architectonic monuments make Brasov one of Romania's main urban centres.

A centrepiece in Brasov is the Black Church which is pictured above. there is an extensive collection of antique rugs on display throughout the church, along with numerous icons it is an essential visiting point.

Brasov serves as an access hub for the local ski field named Poiana-Brasov. it has easy access by taxi or even by bus (train from Bucharest). Dollar for dollar you won't get better value skiing. The lift system is somewhat antiquated but this adds to the charm of the experience. There is a cafe half way down the mountain called the Cabina Postavarul which has a beautiful rustic feel about it, this adds to the flavour of the Ciorbas (soups) which are served as a welcome respite on the side of the mountain.

_________Practical Information
Edit This
Brasov is an access point for the very good value ski resort of Poiana-Brasov. the resort has somewhat dated equipment viz the lifts and rental gear but as far as bang for your buck goes it represents great value and certainly picturesque surroundings.suntours in brasov have the handle on most of the accomodations but I would recommend a few of the hotels as they are close to the lift access points. eg. the Sport hotel and the Poina hotel others are a fair walk with gear as there is no shuttle bus system.the runs are excellent for intermediate skiers and lift tickets represent good value also. When the resort managers and village adopt more commercial attitudes this will be a fantastic resort. It was pleasing to see on my lasy trip there that a number of snow grooming machines were busy preserving the pistes, as this has been a criticism in the past of runs that were poorly maintained.

________Getting Around
Edit This
Public transportation

Transport in Brasov is very extensive, around 40 lines that run until 23-23.30 in weekdays and 22-22.30 in weekends.

It is also cheap (1.50 RON for a single trip, 5 RON for a day pass, as of 21 Nov 2007). Run by RAT Bv (Regia Autonoma Transport Brasov), the network is made up of trolleybuses and buses. It is a lot better to buy tickets from kiosks, but remember to punch them when on the bus. However a 1-day/week pass is more recommended. Even though there are no ticket gates when entering the vehicles, and drivers/operators won't see if you fare-evade, it's wise to have a valid ticket because controllers are abundant, and they will land you with a fine. When someone requests your ticket, always ask to see an ID.

The most important lines for a tourist are:

--line 4: Gara (Train Station) to the Centre (Livada Postei);

--line 51: Gara (Train Station) to the Centre (Piata Sfatului - The Council Square) - it stops 1 minute away from the Black Church. This line also takes you to the Union Square (Piata Unirii) another important site to be seen.

--line 50: Centre (Livada Postei) to Union Square (Piata Unirii), ring-line. It is nice to take it as a tour line of the citadel and some of its surroundings. Please note that it can be crowded and sometimes miss the schedule.

--line 50B (barat): Centre (Livada Postei) to Pietrele lui Solomon, a wonderful nature site. Please note that only some trips stop at this very end (once every hour). Check the timetables for that.

--line 31: Centre (Livada Postei) to Valea Cetatii district. This here is a residential area, but it is woth visiting for its nature surroundings.

For those whose accomodations are located on Str. Lunga or Str. De Mijloc, a handful of lines are available to get to the Centre:
--lines 5, 15, 28 take you from all stops on Str. Lunga to the Centre (Livada Postei) and back. To go to Str. De Mijloc, you stop on Str. Lunga and then walk 5-6min to Str. De Mijloc.

For those who want to travel to Bran, Moeciu, Rasnov and other directions, by bus, you can take them from either Autogara 2 (Busstation 2) or Bartolomeu area or Stadionul Municipal bus-station, there are lines that take you from the train station/centre to these particular places.
--line 23, 23B: Train Station (Gara) - Stad. Municipal via Stad. Tineretului (Autogara 2)and Bartolomeu area. line 12: Centre (Livada Postei) - Stad Tineretului (Autogara 2). line 5: from the Primarie bus stop (New City Hall - 4 min walk from the Livada Postei busstation through the Park) - Stad Municipal via Str Lunga and Bartolomeu.

For those who want to reach the beautiful and fancy Poiana Brasov ski resort/spa:
--line 20 Centre (Livada Postei) - Poiana Brasov. This line has a special fare, around 3.5 lei/trip. Please beware that the previously mentioned tickets and passes are not valid on this line. Please mention when you buy the ticket that you want trips for line 20! The clerks will give you the appropriate ticket.

You have to buy the ticket before and validate it on board. You will not find, however, ticket vending machines, and kiosks are not available in all the bus stops. Look for blue signs that say "bilete" or kiosks that say bilete R.A.T. on them that sell tickets. The buses are fairly new, as the local transport operator (RAT) is undergoing a major renewal program and the overwhelming majority of buses are no more than 2 - 3 years old and the trollies are refurbished or in very good shape. Also, most of the stops have the timetables of the lines presented. For more information about the lines and their timetables, as well as a detailed map of the public transport in Brasov, please check the website www.ratbv.ro (in Romanian). Please note that changes might apply, so check the website for updated information.
