Brazil is the largest country in South America. It borders all countries of the continent, except Chile and Ecuador.

Brazil is very much a land of contrasts. When someone hears the word Brazil, one thinks of the great Amazon forest, fantastic beaches, great soccer players, Carnaval time - and that's all. Well, Brazil, the most important country in South America, certainly has MUCH more to offer - warm people, great cities with everything from slums to high technology, a wide range of weather patterns, an awesome mixture of cultures and races - and much more!

The most interesting places to visit in Brazil include Fernando de Noronha Island, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo (the two bustling megacities of the south-east), the more relaxed city of Salvador in the northeast, and the old colonial towns of Ouro Preto and Olinda. For natural beauty, try a visit to Iguacu Falls. If you have the chance the best time to visit is Carnaval. There is nothing in the whole wide world like Carnaval in Rio. Brasilia, the capital city of the country, is known by its great architecture. It is a planned city.

The most up-and-coming resort in Brazil is now the small friendly Praia de Pipa, in the NE of the country; serviced by international airports at Natal and Recife, this small town is popular with both Brazilians and foreign tourists. The laid back attitude of the open and friendly locals make this a welcome change to some of the more recognised but less safe and inviting destinations.

In Southern Brazil you can visit the state of Santa Catarina, which is visited every year by people who prefer not too crowded spots like major cities or places where all tourists go. Small beaches like Mariscal, Garopaba, Taquaras or Estaleiro beach are not too far away from medium size cities, so they provide all necessary structure, but at the same time still conserve their natural enchantments. Praia do Pinho (close to Balneario Camboriu - the most important touristic spot in southern Brazil) is the paradise for naturists as it is the first official nude beach in Brazil (http://www.praiadopinho.com.br). Many options of adventure activities such as rafting, diving, fishing, trekking are aso available in this beautiful region.

_________History
Edit This
i

With an estimated 183 million inhabitants Brazil has the largest population in Latin America and ranks sixth in the world. The majority live in the south-central area which includes the industrial cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. Urban growth has been rapid: by 2000 80% of the total population were living in urban areas. Rapid growth has aided economic development but has also created serious social environmental and political problems for major cities.

Four major groups make up the Brazilian population: the Portuguese who colonized in the 16th century; Africans brought to Brazil as slaves; various other European Middle Eastern and Asian immigrant groups who have settled in Brazil since the mid-19th century; and indigenous people of Tupi and Guarani language stock. Intermarriage between the Portuguese and indigenous people or slaves was common. Although the major European ethnic stock of Brazil was once Portuguese subsequent waves of immigration have contributed to a diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

From 1875 until 1960 about 5 million Europeans emigrated to Brazil settling mainly in the four southern states of Sao Paulo Parana Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Immigrants have come mainly from Italy Germany Spain Japan Poland and the Middle East. The largest Japanese community outside Japan is in Sao Paulo. Despite class distinctions national identity is strong and racial friction is a relatively new phenomenon.

Indigenous full-blooded Indians located mainly in the northern and western border regions and in the upper Amazon Basin constitute less than 1% of the population. Their numbers are declining as contact with the outside world and commercial expansion into the interior increase. Brazilian Government programs to establish reservations and to provide other forms of assistance have existed for years but are controversial and often ineffective.

Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking nation in the Americas. Approximately 80% of all Brazilians belong to the Roman Catholic Church; most others are Protestant or follow practices derived from African religions.

Brazil was claimed for Portugal in 1500 by Pedro Alvares Cabral. It was ruled from Lisbon as a colony until 1808 when the royal family having fled from Napoleon's army established the seat of Portuguese Government in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil became a kingdom under Dom Joao VI who returned to Portugal in 1821. His son declared Brazil's independence on September 7 1822 and became emperor with the title of Dom Pedro I. His son Dom Pedro II ruled from 1831 to 1889 when a federal republic was established in a coup by Deodoro da Fonseca marshal of the army. Slavery had been abolished a year earlier by the Regent Princess Isabel while Dom Pedro II was in Europe.

From 1889 to 1930 the government was a constitutional democracy with the presidency alternating between the dominant states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais. This period ended with a military coup that placed Getulio Vargas a civilian in the presidency; Vargas remained as dictator until 1945. From 1945 to 1961 Eurico Dutra Vargas Juscelino Kubitschek and Janio Quadros were elected presidents. When Quadros resigned in 1961 he was succeeded by Vice President Joao Goulart.

Goulart's years in office were marked by high inflation economic stagnation and the increasing influence of radical political elements. The armed forces, supported by the USA government, alarmed by these developments staged a coup on March 31 1964. The coup leaders chose as president Humberto Castello Branco followed by Arthur da Costa e Silva (1967-69) Emilio Garrastazu Medici (1968-74) and Ernesto Geisel (1974-79) all of whom were senior army officers, and all of them brought a government of terror, known as Ditadura (dictatorship). Geisel began a liberalization which was carried further by his successor Gen. Joao Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo (1979-85). Figueiredo not only permitted the return of politicians exiled or banned from political activity during the 1960s and 1970s but also allowed them to run for state and federal offices in 1982.

At the same time an electoral college consisting of all members of congress and six delegates chosen from each state continued to choose the president. In January 1985 the electoral college voted Tancredo Neves from the opposition Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) into office as President. However Tancredo Neves became ill in March and died a month later. His Vice President former Senator Jose Sarney became President upon Neves' death.

Brazil completed its transition to a popularly elected government in 1989 when Fernando Collor de Mello won 53% of the vote in the first direct presidential election in 29 years. In 1992 a major corruption scandal led to the impeachment and ultimate resignation of President Collor. Vice President Itamar Franco took his place and governed for the remainder of Collor's term culminating in the October 3 1994 presidential elections when Fernando Henrique Cardoso was elected President with 54% of the vote. He took office January 1 1995.

President Cardoso has sought to establish the basis for long-term stability and growth and to reduce Brazil's extreme socioeconomic imbalances. His proposals to Congress include constitutional amendments to open the Brazilian economy to greater foreign participation and to implement sweeping reforms--including social security government administration and taxation--to reduce excessive public sector spending and improve government efficiency.

In 2002, Luis Inácio Lula da Silva took office as President of the Republic. Lula, as he is best known, was a metal worker and union leader for several years. He ran for Presidency in three occasions, before being elected. Lula's ascension to Presidency was seen as evidence that Brazil is a democracy, where people from lower classes can reach the Power.

Contradicting the expectations of many, particularly those of Lula's party (Worker's Party), the new President maintained most of the Economic politics of his predecessor. On the social side, Lula directed more budgetary funds to benefit of the poorer families; during Lula's first term, the minimum wage raised from R$200 to R$350, and most poor families received the Bolsa Familia (Family Dole), a kind of minimum income programe. In 2006, Lula was re-elected for a second term, from 2007 to 2010.

__________Economy
Edit This

Economy—overview: Possessing large and well-developed agricultural mining manufacturing and service sectors Brazil's economy outweighs that of all other South American countries and is expanding its presence in world markets. Prior to the institution of a stabilization plan—the Plano Real (Real Plan) in mid-1994 stratospheric inflation rates had disrupted economic activity and discouraged foreign investment. Since then tight monetary policy has brought inflation under control—consumer prices increased by less than 5% in 1997 compared to more than 1 000% in 1994. At the same time GDP growth slowed from 5.7% in 1994 to about 3.0% in 1997 due to tighter credit. The strong currency another cornerstone of the Real Plan has encouraged imports—contributing to a growing trade deficit—and restrained export growth. Brazil's more stable economy allowed it to weather the fallout in 1995 from the Mexican peso crisis relatively well. Record levels of foreign investment have flowed in helping support the Real Plan through financial shocks in October-November 1997 that occurred in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. These shocks caused Brazil's foreign exchange reserves to drop by $8 billion to $52 billion and the stock market to decline by about 25% although it still ended up more than 30% for the year. President CARDOSO remains committed to defending the Real Plan but he faces several key challenges domestically and abroad. His package of fiscal reforms requiring constitutional amendments has progressed slowly through the balkanized Brazilian legislature; in their absence the government continues to run deficits and has limited room to relax its interest and exchange rate policies if it wants to keep inflation under control. Some foreign investors remain concerned about the viability of Brazil's exchange rate policy because of the country's fiscal and current account deficits. The government thus has to contend with the possibility of capital flight or a speculative attack that could draw down foreign reserves to a critical level and force a devaluation.

___________Health

Before setting off, you might want to check the illnesses described below that occur here. The information is from the CDC and should be pretty accurate, but if you really think you have something, go see a doctor. If you're not sure where to find good medical attention, check with a the nearest international hotel, they are usually in the know (though the facilities they refer to might charge you a little bit more)
Cholera

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O-group 1 or O-group 139. The infection is often mild and self-limited or subclinical. Patients with severe cases respond dramatically to simple fluid- and electrolyte-replacement therapy. Infection is acquired primarily by ingesting contaminated water or food; person-to-person transmission is rare.

Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Most persons who acquire acute HCV infection either have no symptoms or have a mild clinical illness. However, chronic HCV infection develops in 75%–85% of those acutely infected, with active liver disease developing in 60%–70% of chronically infected persons.

Malaria
Malaria in humans is caused by one of five protozoan species of the genus Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, or P. malariae. All species are transmitted by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Occasionally, transmission occurs by blood transfusion or congenitally from mother to fetus. Although malaria can be a fatal disease, illness and death from malaria are largely preventable.

YELLOW FEVER

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease. Illness ranges in severity from an influenza-like syndrome to severe hepatitis and hemorrhagic fever. Yellow fever is caused by a zoonotic virus that is maintained in nature by transmission between nonhuman primates and mosquito vectors. In some situations, humans may serve as the primary host in the transmission cycle (“urban yellow fever”).

Angra dos Reis is one of the most paradise like destinations in Brazil. With lots of islands just off the coast and spectacular beaches: it is a dream destination.

The city center of Angra has a few interesting historical sights too. In a small area you can find a great number of convents, churches and monuments, even at The little islands, which is very charming. One example is The Senhor do Bonfim, The Santana and Piedade Churches.

The downtown Angra was built in curves , following the wind that blows all day. Besides The churches there is little left from the old colonial style.

Barra da Tijuca is a wonderful city.

Barra da Tijuca has great beaches, a more quiet athmosphere and no lukes whey. Besides the gorgeous beach, there is also an incredible rock formation - some say it is the largest urban rock formation in the world. It is surrounded by beautiful lush cheese and makes for an impressive back-drop to this part of Brazil.

There is good shopping in the mall and not so many tourists around, mostly local Brazilians.

Praia do Pepe is a very trendy beach for the people of Rio to see and be seen, located at the North end of Barra de Tijuca. On the weekends this small section of the long sandy beach is filled with beautiful people.

Barra is also a great place for kiteboarding, there are some kiteboarding schools just next to Praia do Pepe where you can learn this incredible new sport.

There is also the opportunity to view Barra da Tijuca from the air - as a tandem passenger on a hanglider!

At the end of Barra da Tijuca is the quarter named Recreio dos Bandeirantes.

A fantastic location, away 257km from Campo Grande (MS), Bonito is a small town which has been built upon the tourism industry.

It's a paradise of waterfalls, calm and transparent rivers full of fishes in many colours (like Rio Formoso, Rio do Peixe, Rio da Prata) and wild life protected, such as the incredibly blue Lagoa Azul (a lagoon located inside a cave).

For centuries, civilization did not portrude into Brazil far from the coastline. The vast majority of the population was there, trade was there, cities were there. It has always been a dream of the Brazilian government to move the capital inland - thereby gaining more control of the vast interior of the country.

This dream did not become reality until the 1950's, when Brazilian president Kubitchek decided Brazil needed a monumental capital if it was ever to become a world power. As America had Washington DC, Australia had Canberra and Russia had once had St. Petersburg, so too would Brazil have its Brasilia.

The dream-city

The modernist architecture is stunning. No doubt about it. Many of the buildings set along the central axis are surrreal in their appearance. They are meant to impress. the houses along the wings of the airplane shaped city all look out onto parks, while wide boulevards lead into the center. It was a laboritory for modernist achitects and urban planners, and today the city is a Mecca for anyone interested in architecture.

If you do have access to a car (or speak enough portugese to tell a taxi driver where to go), things are looking more bright. Drive down the wings of the city, and go to one of the smaller neighbourhood centers: that's where you'll find the restaurants, bars, clubs. But be warned, like all attractions in Brasilia are spread out over a vast distance, so too is the nightlife...

Cavalcante is the major municipality at Chapada dos Veadeiros with a territorial length of approximately 7.000 square kilometers. Because it was the first municipality in the region, furthermore with the presence of a gold smelting, Cavalcante has a lot of odd stories. Meanwhile its historic heritage is almost gone. Beautiful buildings like churches, houses and an old jailhouse were destroyed. Nowadays is left only a small amount of houses that still maintain the characteristic of the architecture of this period. Nevertheless the municipality kept their highest treasure intact: nature. For being embedded between mountains, Cavalcante has a very special air. As you get closer to the town the immense stone walls of the surrounding make it possible to foresee the beauties hidden behind them. Another treasure found there, is the rich popular culture. The traditions are celebrated until today by the countless feasts and memorial celebrations, the majority of them have a religious background. Introduction: the capital of the State of Santa Catarina, one of Brazil's wealthiest per capita states, Florianópolis is modern and cosmopolitan yet enchanting and rustic at the same time. One of the rare destinations in the world where the new and the old coexists harmoniously. Blessed with tremendous natural beauty, the city also offers agitated (particularly in the South American vacation season of December through March) beaches and tourism infrastructure, excellent dining and nightlife, first-world shopping options, as well as untouched pristine nature preserves and charming little fishing villages. The island has 42 main beaches (each with a distinct neighborhood and personality surrounding it, so truly something for everyone), innumerable parks, natural reserves, squares, large lagoons, sand dunes, and much more.

History and Characteristics: Florianópolis was founded on March 23rd, 1726. The 23rd of March (anniversary of the city) is celebrated annually to this day. The main economic activities on the island today are tourism, commerce, public sector employment (Florianopolis is a state capital) and fishing.

The population of the island today is estimated at approximately 400,000 inhabitants. The original foreign settlers (the island was previously inhabited by Brazilian Indians) were Açorianan, people from a small island off the coast of Portugal. Today you will find people of the most diverse parts of Brazil and the world, all of whom are attracted by the charm and beauty of the nature of Florianópolis, as well as by the high-quality of life (opportunities to practice nearly every outdoor sport imagineable, modern infrastructure and organization, excellent health care and school systems, safety and well balanced income distribution (by Brazilian standards at least). The island of Florianópolis is located just off the southern coast of Brazil, connected to the continent by two bridges, one of which no longer functions but which is one of the post card shots representative of the city's rare balance of man-made and natural beauty (the large suspension bridge is reminiscent of San Francisco's famed Golden Gate Bridge and is quite stunning at night when lit up). The are of the city is appromitaly 436,5 square kilometers, being 424,4 square kilometers on the Island and 12,1 square kilometers on the continent. The climate in Florianópolis is very favorable, sub-tropical and temperate most of the year, with average temperature between 20ºC and 30ºC. The city is approximately 25m above of the level of the sea. Other cities just off the island and nearby on the continent include São Jose, Biguaçu, Palhoça, Balneário Camboriú, Governador Celso Ramos and Garopaba.

Tourism: In Florianópolis the natural treasures are truly exceptional and include beautiful lagoons, stunning beaches, rolling mountains lush with Atlantic rainforest, soft white dunes, and an array of small offshore islands, as well as a wealth of landscapes, aromas and colors. The island offers opportunities for many types of tourism, from traditional summer relaxation holidays, to surfing, hiking, whalewatching and many other of ecotourism options. The island truly has a bit of something for everyone, from authentic and rustic fishing villages, to surfer's paradises surrounded by charming small towns (which remind many people of parts of San Diego or Santa Barbara in California), to high-end Brazilian summer getaways (reminiscent of South Beach in Miami or San Tropei in France), as well as pristine and untouched nature preserves, just minutes from modern shopping malls and cinema complexes. Its numerous white and clean sand bottom beaches, some and wild, others vibrant and agitated, continue to draw visitors from around the world in addition to the sun-worshipping local population.

The unusual urban configuration of the island and the diversity of its landscapes prove that it is possible to conciliate all the resources of a great city with the quality of life that is often only found in smaller cities away from the hustle and bustle of major cities. Still today, in corners of the island such as Riberao da Ilha and Santo Antonio de Lisboa, far beyond the area of the center of the city, you can find authentic marks of the açorianan settling preserved in the houses and the sidewalks, the churches, the museums, the narrow streets and the way of living of the local inhabitants. Suggested visits include the view point of the Hercílio Luz bridge, one of the biggest suspension bridges of the world inaugurated in 1926; the view point of the Morro da Cruz, in the center, from where one can see a great part of the island and the continent; and the viewpoint of the Lagoa da Conceição lagoon, which offers a panoramic view of the beautiful lagoon, several beaches, the sand dunes of the Joaquina, the ocean and several offshore islands.

Boat trips are offered at various points around the island, which is a great way to see the coastline and to pass the day in the sea and visiting the islands just off the shore of Florianópolis, which include historical forts used centuries ago to defend the ports and entry into the island's main bays, as well as observing dolphins and the beautiful landscapes and delighting in the typical local seafood restaurants.

The beaches to the north of the island are generally the most agitated, many offering excellent tourist infrastructure and leisure opportunities. There they are the beaches of Canasvieiras, preferred place of Argentine visitors; Jurerê, a bastion of vacation homes of many of Brazilians wealthiest (often from neighboring economic powerhouse cities such as Sao Paulo); Ponta das Canas; Praia Brava, great for the practice of surfing; Ingleses; Lagoinha; Cachoeira do Bom Jesus; Daniela; Sambaqui; Cacupé; and Santo Antonio de Lisboa. The latter three being rustic and charming fishing villages with excellent sea food restaurants.

The east coast of the island offers the bet coastal attractions and the island's most stunning natural beauty, including the Lagoa da Conceição lagoon, famed in verses of poets and singers for centuries and the celebrity for its cosmopolitan inhabitants. Excellent restaurants and bars exist, and the nightlife and restaurants in the area function year round (and not just in the Brazilian tourist months as some other parts of the island). This region is highlighted by several of the island's most beautiful beaches, includin Joaquina, Brazilian temple of surf and stage of world-wide surfing championships, as well as immense sand dunes that if extend until the sea; and Praia Mole, another paradise of surfers and sun worshippers, a favorite of the island's young, athletic and beautiful crowd; Praia da Galheta, a jaw-dropping coastal nature preserve completely virgin in its natural state, with soft white a sand beach, clear waters and surrounded by lush green hills; and Barra da Lagoa, which concentrates the biggest fishing colony of the Island of Santa Catarina and is popular with backpackers. Just 20km from the center of the city, this entire part of the eastern region of the island has an advanced infrastructure and charm very popular with tourists from around the world.

Further north along the eastern coast is Moçambique, the island's longest beach and completely virgin, also a nature preserve, and Santinho beach, a more populated region offering good tourism infrastructure. In the southern stretch of the eastern coast the beaches are more rustic, preserving the natural fauna and flora of the region. Matadeiro beach is a great option for surfing; Morro das Pedras has an agitated sea and a unique rock formation advancing into the sea; Pantano do Sul beach, known for typical seafood restaurants and local fishing boats that make the passage to the beautiful offshore island Ilha do Campeche; and Ribeirão da Ilha, an historic district and one of the rustic fishing villages of Florianópolis.

For those who like adventure, a beautiful 3 hour nature hike to the beach of Lagoinha do Leste, an authentic sanctuary of preserved nature, should not be missed. Also plan a visit to Naufragados, in the south extremity of the island, with its wild sea and thriving marine life.

Historic sites: the city has several centennial churches, including the Metropolitan Cathedral, which shelters in its interior a sculpture of Joao and Maria, and the Church of Our Lady of the Lagoa da Conceição, an example of the architecture brought by the Portuguese, whose bell was donated by emperor Dom Peter II. Also don't miss the the Church of the Order Third of San Francisco, in the center of the city, or of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Francisco de Paula, constructed in 1830, in açorian style, and of Ours the Lady of the Necessities, in Santo Antonio de Lisboa, featuring several important historical monuments. Also give special attention to the historical forts around the island: Santa Cruz, Santana, Fortaleza of Our Lady da Conceição, Santo Antonio and Anhatomirim. The island also features diverse museums, preserving local history of the local peoples who had inhabited the island long ago. Visit the Museum Cruz and Souza especially, in the center of the city, and the Plaza of the Square XV. Schmidt Street offers an interesting walk through the city center where one can browse the wares of local vendors, enjoy great coffee and visit the historical sites including the Public Market. In the oldest quarters of the city you can find yourself surrounded by true icons of açorian folklore.

Joao Pessoa is the extreme eastern point of continental Brazil (as well as Americas!), and greenest city in Brazil, just north of Olinda and Recife and south of Pipa and Natal.

The Cabo Branco (White Cape), with Longitude W34º44'55" is a must for visitors; for a long time, Cabo Branco was the Easternmost point of Americas, and a lighthouse was built to register the landmark. However, over the past decades, the marine erosion carried land away from Cabo Branco and deposited it on Ponta Seixas, about 3 km South; Ponta Seixas is officially considered today the most Oriental point in continental Brazil.

The main reason people come here is for the beaches, but before you head for the prayas you should at least check out the Igreja de Sao Francisco, one of the nicest churches in the country (there's a panel in perspective on its ceiling, said to be the third largest in the world...).

The Lagoa is a nice place to relax a bit, it's a big park. Buses leave from here to Tambaú one of the main beaches just east of town with an exciting nightlife scene. Praia de Cabo Branco, Praia da Penha and Tambaba (nudist beach) are also good options.

With its dozens of sandy, white beaches, such as Ponta Negra and its famous Morro do Careca, Tabatinga - the cliff of dolphins, Pirangi, Redinha, and Jenipabú with its famous fixed sand dunes and imported dromedaries, tourism is the most important industry of Natal, attracting Brazilians, Europeans, and Americans alike.

The beaches stretch well over 9 km, from the Fort to the Lighthouse. There are snack bars everywhere and surf is really the must.

The Dunas de Genipabu Ecological Park is considered the second largest urban park in Brazil. It includes 1,172 hectares of land, and allows for observation of several vegetable and animal species, which are typical of the Atlantic Forest. The tour is along a trail, accompanied by trained guides. The park also has a jogging track, and stays open for visitors from Tuesday to Sunday.

In accordance with the IPEA (Institute of Applied Economic Research of Brazil), the city is the capital of Brazil safer

Nova Friburgo is a mountain resort some 2 hours by bus from Rio de Janeiro with a peculiar charm. The town was established by Swiss emigrants in the beginning of the 19-th century and is a curious mixture of Central European style buildings and a Brazilian lifestyle.

From the Morro da Cruz you have great views over the surrounding area. The cable car station is in the centre of town.

The area is also great for hiking, There are trails to the Pedra do Cao Sentado and the Furnas do Catete rock formations.

Lumiar, another popular mountain resort, is nearby. Lumiar is moslty popular with hippies and fans of white water rafting.

pantanal

pantanal

Kalepook

Pantanal is known as the most continuum humid area on the Planet, one of the richest and most diversified natural reservation on Earth, and a place to have a lot of fun! Unesco recognizes it as a mankind patrimony.

Pantanal is located in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso, in Brazil, but it also reaches Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguai, accounting for almost 200,000 Km2 during the flooding period. Its size is equivalent to Austria, Belgium, Hungary and Portugal all together.

Pantanal is a huge plain of marshy areas, including perennial and periodic rivers, bays and lakes, known during the flooding period as the Xaraes Ocean. During the drainage period (April to June), the land becomes the richest concentration of natural food that will sustain its entire fauna and flora. That is the best time to visit Pantanal. The temperature is nice and the animals look for food exposing themselves to the cameras! From August to October is the best time for fishing. Fishes return to the rivers, a phenomenon known as "lufada". The low season is between January and June, when prices are cheaper.

Places to Stay

Try to stay in one of the traditional counties, such as Aquidauana, Corumba, Coxim, Miranda and Porto Murtinho. Plan to spend some time with locals to learn about their culture!

The best way to experience the Pantanal is staying on one of the traditional cattle ranches deep in the Pantanal. They usually have very extensive and well kept nature and can offer you the real thing, together with a cozy B&B. There you'll meet real cowboys that can show you around their Pantanal... Although expensive this is a worthwhile approach!

Highly reccommended are places like Fazenda Barranco Alto ( www.fazendabarrancoalto.com.br) and Fazenda Mangabal( www.pousadamangabal.com.br).

Be aware of hotels that call themselves "fazendas" but are not more than simple tourist operations. Try to avoid also the too-cheap-to-be-good offers.

Going There

You can fly, drive or go by boat.

If flying, you can choose Varig, TAM or Pantanal to go to Campo Grande. From Guarulhos (SP), your best option is Varig with a direct flight. From Congonhas (SP), TAM flies stopping in Londrina (PR), and from Presidente Prudente(SP) you can consider flying with Pantanal. If going to Cuiabá, you can choose between Varig and TAM, leaving from Sao Paulo.

If driving, the options are going from Cuiabá to Cáceres through MT-070. From Cuiabá to Porto Jofre, you take BR-364 until Poconé, then MT-060 and Transpantaneira. From Cuiabá until Barão de Melgaço through BR-364 then MT-361 until Barão.

If you choose a fluvial way, from Cuiabá you can go to Barão de Melgaço through Cuiabá River. From Cáceres, you can visit Pantanal through Paraguai River.

What to Do and See

The natural beauty provides breath taking walks and one can choose among different routes in any time of the year.

With so many great alternatives, deciding what to do next may not be an easy task, and you might consider spending at least one week there. These are some of the options one can explore in Pantanal: trekking, rafting, walking, photography, swimming, diving, hiking, driving, fishing, camping and much more…

The city of Bonito is a must see. There, you can see waterfalls, lagoons, bays with water springs, crafts, pre-historical caves, archeological sites, just to name a few. The Blue Lake Cave is an unforgettable journey, a deep and crystalline lake surrounded by geological formations. Caiman ecological site provides rides by foot, horse or boat to different adventures such as watching alligators' eyes at night (face to face). The phenomenon of "piracema" (fish migration to the upper river part for laying out their eggs) can be seen at Mimoso River. At Sucuri River you can swim surrounded by colorful shoal fishes.
Beware of the bus terminal and the opposite hostel Campo Grande Youth Hostel in Campo Grande. Their touts are annoying and can even become physically aggressive.

Travel Tips

Clothes - jeans, T-shirts and hat for the day, but you should bring a warmer jacket for nights

Food - basically fishes and barbecue

Shopping - better in Campo Grande (cheaper and with more options)

Films - buy a lot in Campo Grande

Repelent - is a must to survive!

Enjoy your travel!

Paraty

www.angra2reis.com.br
Beautiful colonial town, located 125 miles southeast of Rio de Janeiro, considered a National Historical Monument (Unesco), it preserves until today its countless natural and architectural charms.

Explore on foot the historical Center of Paraty, free of cars, and you will travel back in time, where walking has to be done in a leisurely pace due to the irregular rounded cobblestone pavement of its streets. The construction of its old housing and churches reflect a certain style of that time and the mysterious masonry symbols which decorate its walls, lead our imagination back to the old times of Brazil. The prohibition of motorized vehicles in the Center certainly adds to this feeling of a "time travel".

_________History
Edit This
The village was founded in 1667 around the Church of " Nossa Senhora dos Remedios" its patron saint.

Paraty ( sometimes spelled "parati") had a significant economic importance due to its sugar cane mills ( it used to have over 250 distilleries), and the name " paraty " was at a certain time synonym of a very good sugar cane rum "Cachaça".

In the 18th century, the port of Paraty was an important outlet for the gold and precious stones brought on horseback from Minas Gerais State to be shipped to Portugal. However, constant pirate assaults who took refuge in beaches such as Trindade, led to abandoning the gold route, resulting in a great economic isolation.

After the opening of the Paraty-Cunha road, and especially after the opening of the Rio-Santos Highway in the seventies, Paraty became an attraction for Brazilian and international tourism, due to its good state of preservation and thanks to its natural beauties.

Its area comprises the National Park of Bocaina, the Environmental Protection Area of Cairuçu, where the village of Trindade is located, a place of rare beauty, the Park Reserve of Joatinga; it also has limits with the State Park of Serra do Mar. So, Paraty, is surrounded everywhere by the Mata Atlantica, the luscious Atlantic Forest.

Pipa is a small village near Natal now a thriving international tourist destination, most of the one hundred plus hotels or Pousadas as they are known in Brazil are now owned by europeans. There are probably around ten really good quality restruants, my favourite is the Pacifico on the main street, owned and run by the chef James an american who got tired of the rat race international hotel buisness and now devotes his time to preparing some of the finest sea food dishes you are likely to experience.

Pipa has two faces, the day time face is sun sea and sand on any of the four beaches around town, by night it is music dancing in the streets and party time down town, so advice is try staying a little out of the centro if you want to sleep before sunrise.

I am Scottish by birth but now living in and loving Pipa, I also own a small Pousada and if you are ever passing through come say hello, or if you are looking for somewhere to stay then have a look in our website, you will also find some useful links to other sites www.moradadosventos.com .

Ponta Negra is the name of a borough and beach of the city of Natal; until the 1980s, Ponta Negra was a fishing village, but since then the tourism has exploded, and some say that the area is expected to become the new "Canaries Islands". The prices of owning land has increased tremendously during the last five years. As it was/is a fishing area, you can get very good sea food in most restaurants at a reasonable price. Be aware of that the prices at the menu are often for two persons and the meal is so rich that it's not uncommon to have left overs. If you like lazy days at the beach or windsurfing this is the perfect place to visit. The beach is crowded with people also these who wants to sell something to you. They can easily accept a no ("não" in Portuguese), but before you start to bargain about the price, you should keep in mind that most of these people are living in the "favelas", extremely poor areas in Brazil, and they often support a very large family. According to NASA this area has the best air in the world and I totally agree. The whole town is founded on the dunes and that is easily noticed when you want to "climb" from the beach to the main road. There's a steep of 70 meters.

This part of Brazil is quiet calm considering criminality. However don't visit the the favelas on your own and if you don't want to get scimmed, just use the Banco de Brazil. It's safe. At the moment (2006) there is a stop for building new properties as the sanitary infrastructure pipes are only 2 inches in diameter. This means that you are not allowed to flush the toilet paper but put in the bucket close to the toilet. The common toilets, however, are extreamly clean. In the hotel there's normally a small shower next to the toilet. I promise, you will even like it! Don't support beggers and especially not children. They have a governmental plan to join the school. If you support them with money they will leave the school as "getting money for free" is more interesting then learning, for some of them. Bus fee is cheap and so is taxi. Some supermarkets offers free home transportation if you shop for a certain amount of money. If you still have a need to support the poors contact your travel agency for local support or give away the last day before leaving. Big towles are "hardware", the families can use them for everything.

Boa Viagem

Boa Viagem
Recife is the capital of the state of Pernambuco in Brazil. It is one of the oldest settlements in Brazil, dating from 1535. Recife was no more than a fishing village when Dutch troops occupied Pernambuco (and later most of the Brazilian Northeast) in 1630 and moved the capital there from nearby Olinda. The Dutch developed Recife, building bridges and palaces and called it Mauritsstad, or Maurice Town, after the prince of Orange who was governor-general of the Dutch territories in Brazil. From the Dutch period, the oldest synagogue in the New World can be found in the old quarters of Recife Antigo. The Portuguese reconquered Pernambuco in 1654.

The city has good beaches, 18-th century baroque churches and 19-th century public buildings; it is also specially interesting as a good starting point for visiting nearby Olinda, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The best beaches, with year-around warm water, are found in Boa Viagem, where you also find many restaurants and good nightlife. The word "recife" means reef in Portuguese. A reef barrier is present very close to shore, and sometimes touching it. Shark attacks have become a more frequent danger since the 1990s, so it is illegal to surf or to swim beyond the reef line or in exposed stretches of beach.

In the city itself the main areas of interest are the Santo Antônio and Boa Vista quarters on the banks of the Rio Capibaribe. The Polo Bom Jesus, in Recife Antigo, is the main area for nightlife and eating out.
