The "Chocolate Hills" are green

The "Chocolate Hills" are green

Conrad Stevens

Bohol is an island located in the south central Philippines, a two hour ferry journey from Cebu. It's main town, Tagbilaran has an airport.

Major attractions include some beautiful beaches, diving and snorkelling, the Chocolate Hills, manmade forest, tarsier sanctuaries, numerous 16th Century Spanish-style churches, the tranquil Loboc river and the site of a blood pact with Magellan.

Balicasag Island has long been considered one of the best dive spots in the country. Only 45 minutes away by boat from Panglao, the visibility is incredible, the coral cover is excellent and fish are abundant. Large fish found here include barracuda, jacks, parrot fish and garoupa. However, the tourists in the area have severely devastated the natural coral reefs in Balicasag.

Chocolate Hills, Bohol

Chocolate Hills, Bohol

Scott Stevenson
In the dry season Chocolate hills are exactly what the name suggests they are: chocolate brown cone shaped hills. In the wet season they tend to be a bit to green to remind you of chocolate, but they are still a great sight.

The 1000 hills are probably of volcanic origin, but local legends claim they are the tears of giants who once lived on the island.

To get to the hills, firts take a bus to Carmen, from where you can either get to the hills on motorbike or just hiking (it's only 4 km).

The trip to the hills is as interesting as the hills themselves. On your way there, visit the oldest church in the Philippines in Baclayon (1595), try what it's like to cross a hanging bridge, have a look at the manufacturing of Bohol's native products such as basketware and enjoy the intense green of the rice fields.

Pueblo De Pamilacan Resort

William F. Soriano

The small island of Pamilacan is nestled in the heart of the Bohol Sea, the Visayas Archipelagos in the Philippines. Its name is derived from the word pilak, which is a large hooked implement made and used by the islanders to capture manta rays, whale sharks and bryde's whale.

The Bohol Sea is said to be a breeding ground of these mysterious but beautiful creatures. The island in previous times, served as a watch station against the intrusion of pirates and enemies of the Spanish colony as evidenced by the 200-year-old Spanish fort on the northeast side of the island.

Today, 250 families live in the island. The people used to hunt dolphins, whales, whale sharks and manta rays but these animals are now fully protected by law in the Philippines.

The attractions on the island that may catch your interest is the ancient Spanish fort, the Santa Cruz at the chapel's altar, the life within the marine sanctuary and the white beaches around the island. Pamilacan is a coral island and fossilised seashells can be seen on the island's rocky hill.

At present, the jaws and bones of marine mammals and whale sharks still adorn a number of homes of the village. The blue waters surrounding the island teem with lush and colorful marinelife.

Tagbilaran will probably be your starting place to make some trips on the island. Close to town there are some old chucrhes dating from the 16-th century as well as some nice small towns.

The Punta Cruz pirate watchtower is just 15 km north of town, near Maribojoc. Loon, in the same direction but a bit further, has a beautiful old church, dating from 1753. Antequera has a sunday market. It is some 25 km north of Tagbilaran.

East of town, Bool (just 3 km) has a monument commemorating the blood compact between Legaspi and Rajah Sikutana, continue for 4 km and you are in Bacalayon, which has the oldest church of Bohol, going all the way back to 1595.

You can also take a boat trip up the Loboc river. Loboc town has a church with a very beautiful ceiling. Loay also has an old church.

There are plenty of hotels in Tagbilaran, but if you prefer more quiet surroundings, you should head for Panglao Islands. Some of the resorts are very expensive, but just ask the locals to bring you to a more reasonable priced resort. There are plenty to choose from. Wherever you decide to stay, the amazing sunsets are for free !!
