Bergamo (Bèrghem in
Piazza Vecchia e biblioteca Angelo Mai
Tiraboschi" situata in via San Bernardino 74.
Strada verso Bergamo alta

| Bergamo is divided in two parts with
quite a distinct atmosphere. The Città Alta is the old part of town, it has
small steep streets with old houses and many churches, the Città Bassa
brings you the fast paced Italian life of the industrialized north. Most travelers head for the Città Alta immediately. The main attractions are the Piazza Vecchia with its Renaissance buildings such as the Biblioteca Civica (1594) and the Palazzo della Ragione (1199). The Piazza del Duomo is just around the corner; the Duomo is well worth a visit and has a wonderful marble facade. There are a few other churches worth seeing such as the San Michele (13-th century) and the Sant'Andrea. The Porta Sant'Agostino is the main gate, built in the 16-th century to defend the city. Another interesting gate is the San Giacomo gate. _____Sights Edit This Torre Civica Torre Civica Andrew McGarrell Everywhere you go there is something to see. A castle, a fountain, the view and the buildings. The principle big door is Porta Sant'Agostino built in 1575 and is the entrance to Citt? Alta at the top of Viale Vittorio Emanuele. There is an awesome walk along the top of "Le Mura" including parks and a view for kilometers of the lower town and the plains below. type: Landmarks World66 rating: [rate it] url: fondazione.bergamoestoria.it Piazza Vecchia Edit This Torre Civica Torre Civica photo by: Andrew McGarrell The best thing about Italy is the idea of the town square. It's a central focusing point where you can go to see people, have an ice cream, an aperitif or dinner and sometimes even take in a puppet show or medieval dancing. The best square to experience is in Città Alta with the Contarini Fountain from 1780 in the center, the Civic Library and the Palazzo della Ragione from the 1400s. The Bell Tower rings 100 times at 10 o'clock at night, a custom that remains from the medieval times to warn the farmers to come in before the walled-city more.. type: Squares World66 rating: [rate it] Il Sentierone Edit This The Sentierone is to the right The Sentierone is to the right photo by: Andrew McGarrell Going off to the right of the center of the lower town, while looking at the upper town from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele is the huge walking street called Il Sentierone. From the top is a great overview of Citt? Alta and the lower town. After you get off the funicular in the Upper Town in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, follow the signs and the narrow street called Via Rocca, up to La Rocca. It has a great museum and an old Roman road with grooves worn into it by Roman Chariots outside on the right under the bushes before you enter the castle. Many travel web sites have real estate on them. It makes sense. Sell everything you own and live abroad in order to make your money and life style go farther - or just buy that second house. Need just one month? Rent a house! What a better way to see the world! Movie actors buy villas on the Lake of Como which is just over 30 minutes away. A few hours farther away in Tuscany there are foreigners galore who enjoy the sunny Italian life there. What a better place to have that home than in the Bergamo area. It's within only around 2 and 1/2 hours to Switzerland, France, the Adriatic Sea or the Mediterranean Sea. And now that the airport at Orio al Serio has become international, it's just a hop to other countries, or even just back home. Local mountain chalets are from 50,000 euro and even less! Village apartments or houses in the area are the same or more, depending on what you have in mind - and in your pocket book! Have a look - to see for yourself - and think about new possibilities for traveling! Try the region of Lombardy. And depending on the date, you may run into culture in the streets in the form of puppet shows, Carnivale parades, processions, dancing, music and performances. Sometimes there are so many events going on in this city of art that it becomes difficult to find a hotel. To find out what's going on when you are visiting, the public tourist information office can help you find the events you prefer most and then get you your hotel even if it means getting a place just slightly out of town (insist with the tourist information assistant to get you a hotel just out of town and directions how to get there), which means more or less 15 minutes away, and it's worth it. Especially since there are buses connecting most all locations now with the new city bus services. At night it's fun to just stroll up and down the main street either in Città Alta or in the Città Bassa. There are lots of Cafe Bars in Via Gombito in Città Alta and all around. Therefore the concept of a bar in Italy includes a happy feeling that can involve the whole family with gorgeous views of gardens, valleys and the lower town; or it can be a pub atmosphere for mainly young adults who need to sit down, relax and talk or listen to music, all different kinds of music depending on the style of the bar or the event of that night. | Bergamo Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Baptistry in Città Alta, behind Piazza Vecchia Baptistry in Città Alta, behind Piazza Vecchia Andrew McGarrell Bergamo is divided in two parts with quite a distinct atmosphere. The Città Alta is the old part of town, it has small steep streets with old houses and many churches, the Città Bassa brings you the fast paced Italian life of the industrialized north. _______Sights Edit This Lion Column of the Duomo Lion Column of the Duomo Karen Brubaker Everywhere you go there is something to see. For dancing and discoteques you may go out of town or, best of all, to the lakes or even Milan. Be sure to check out the festivals.
