Beyond Munich, capital of Bavaria counting 1.3 mio souls though often called a "big village", and its sprawling suburbs: the Alps - home of many famous mountain resorts. Landscapes as in Visconti's movie about the life of König Ludwig II, villages and towns that seem unchanged for the last 100 years except maybe for a few additional banks, gas stations and souvenir shops along the main town roads. Otherwise, the "homo bavaricus" has stayed pretty much the same: country shirt and richly decorated traditional jacket, leather pants with flowery suspenders (Lederhosen), felt hat garnished with feathers, "goatee beards" and many pins full of ornaments, little bells and trinkets. The "costumes" are worn on Sundays and even in Munich during the Oktoberfest season. Some take a raft, beer and music ride down Munich's home river the Isar. On the other hand the sacred King of all Bavarians, Ludwig II, architect of almost all castles in the south of Munich of which Neuschwanstein (new-swan-rock) is best known for its role model for Walt Disney's sleeping beauty castle.

Wouldn't you be dreaming to have breakfast on the castle's terasse in company of Sissi, overlooking the best in natural Kitsch the Bavarian.

For most travellers this region of southern Germany bordering the Alps is the most quintessentially (and stereotypically) German. Bavaria is the land of Lederhosen and wood carvers, of giant stoneware mugs called Maß filled with Starkbier (dark bock beer) and houses painted with colorful frescoes. However, Bavaria is the most fancied state in Germany for purposes of vacationing and tourism. Its sceneries and cultural riches, the traditional Bavarian hospitality are the advantages are appreciated by the innumerable visitors from Germany and abroad. One of the biggest attractions is Munich’s yearly Oktoberfest but year round travellers can find festivals, great beer and lively music in the hundreds of villages scattered in the region. It is always interesting to spend some days in the surrounding of Nuremberg, Passau, Regensburg, Wurzburg, Augsburg or Bamberg - the cities offer cultural programs and nightlife, the countryside calm and relaxing atmosphere and beautiful landscapes. Several days could be spent just driving around stopping wherever you come across something interesting.

The variety of health resorts and spas of world-wide renown stretching from the Rhön Mountains to the Alps offer holiday-makers every facility for health and fitness. No wonder, therefore, that Bavaria welcomes nearly 22 percent of all international tourist traffic in Germany. Discover for example Berchtesgaden, Coburg, Fussen, Garmisch-partenkirchen or Oberammergau.

Tourism in the Free State of Bavaria has become an increasingly important economic factor, especially in areas with less potent economic structure. The total number of overnight accommodations in all hotels and private lodgings, with a total capacity of about 715.000 beds, amounts to nearly 93 million, inclusive also of camping sites. As regards international tourism, the Free State has also notably improved its standing. One in nearly five visitors comes from abroad. Traditionally most foreign tourists come from the USA, followed by the Netherlands, Japan, Italy and Austria.

If you haven't seen enough yet of this interesting region don't forget to pay a visit to Altmuhl - great wandering area, Bayreuth with its famous Wagner festivals or some world-known fairy-tale sites like Neuschwanstein or Rothenburg ob der Tauber along the Romantic Road. Don´t forget to visit the newly build Legoland Deutschlans near Günzburg.

________Romantic Road
Edit This
The Romantic Road is one of the most popular attractions of Bavaria. From the Main River and Wurzburg down to Fussen in the "Allgäu" you will find a series of gorgeous towns and villages with castles, churches and landscapes like in a fairy-tale of the Grimm Brothers. On more than 350 km the Romantic Road opens up the richness of the south German culture. Off the highway the traveller can enjoy both silence and a various choice of impressions: episcopal residences, princely courts, proud trading cities, Bavarian palaces, all surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Most famous are Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbuhl, Augsburg and Neuschwanstein near Schwangau.

Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see
This central Bavarian region is popular with hikers and cyclists. Altmuhl’s primary attraction is a network of footpaths that has linked area villages for centuries. You’ll pass Roman ruins, prehistoric caves (near Kelheim), medieval castles and walled towns (Berching). The trail is very scenic, winding along limestone cliffs and down the banks of the Altmuhl River, which connects a chain of pretty lakes and camping sites. Also running through the valley is the canal that connects Germany’s main rivers (the Rhine, the Main and the Danube Canal).

Ansbach is a beautiful walled town in south Germany. It's symbol is 3 trout in a stream on a sheild. you can see these trout from the bridge outside the walls that span the stream.Ansbach is a beautiful town , that is well worth the visit. In 1989 there was a restaurant there named "ludwigstuben". it served incredible Italian food and had great service. - (Still there but a much better Italian place is on MaxillianStarsse before the train tracks. Try the pizza). - It is up on the hill near the Barton Kaserne and I highly recommend it.
I had the priviledge of living in Ansbach in 1982 and it is a time in my life I will never forget. The people are wonderful! GruessGott mein freunden!
Mark Wadsworth

There's a lot of sites still around that are worth visiting. #1 is Prinzregent on the corner of Kasernendamm and Residenz Strasse near the Mall. The owner, Qweetchie is a cool guy. The Pub/Restaraunt has some great intl eats and drinks and an interesting vibe takes place. There is/was a cool Brit Pub in the same bldg. If you're actually gonna be in Ansbach - its very near the Taubertal Music Fest in Summer in Rothenburg. Well worth scouting out - The Cure - Heather Nova. In Ansbach walk in the pedestrian zone Altstadt and discover all the unique - and common - shops. Rent DVD s and talk English at the H&R Block/Video Rental Place on the main road right before the army base. And keep driving on that road 50 miles to Nurnburg - another worthwhile trip.

Augsburg was founded by the Romans and is called after the emperor Augustus. The main attraction of Augsburg consist of the medieval streets, with its many old houses. Be sure to see the Fuggerei, the world’s first social housing project for the poor. The heart of the city is the Rathausplatz, with terraces where you can have a beer in summer and a big christmas tree in winter. Other sights include the Dom, the Maximilianstrasse and the Maximilian museum. Augsburg is a nice town and deserves a visit of at least one day. It can be visited as a day trip from Munich, which is only 50 km away.

Augsburg is a beautiful city that still maintains a large degree of its Renaissance character despite World War II damage. The highlight is the Maximilianstrasse, which features many fine houses with fancy Renaissance gables and three magnificent fountains. Just off this main road stands the Italian style mansion of the powerful Fugger banking clan, built in 1512-15. Another fine feature of the Altstadt is the 17th- century armory.

If you want to see the history of Franconia and the South of Germany, Bamberg still lives it. Never destroyed, the city has the same face than during the 30 years war.

In the 10th century the capital of the Holy Roman Emipre and called a second Rome, later one of the franconian prince bishoprics and today a little, quiet city in the north of Bavaria, Bamberg has its own charme, especially for the historical interested.

Next to historical buildings, a beautiful cathedral and an old city hall in the middle of the river (Regnitz) you find 10,000 students using the historical monuments for a liberal arts education and guests can experience the culture of Franconia.

Bamberg is famous for his smoked beer, a very special taste in beer. And for everybody who does not like the smoked beer: Bamberg is world leader in brewing beer. In the city itself are 9 Breweries with lots of different kinds of beer, in the countryside around are supposed to be over 300 different breweries. Every mile you can taste a new kind of beer.

Bayreuth is also a university town and offers some interesting sights and museums. One major highlight is the Margravial Opera House, one of the most beautiful Baroque theatre in Europe. The historic gardens of the Hermitage with its mysterious grottoes and water fountains and the Richard-Wagner-Festspielhaus with its unique acoustics are also highlights. 100 Kilometer south of Munich this was the retreat of Adolph Hitler and his Nazi leadership. Not much remains of their homes except for the impressive Eagles Nest. The extremly beautiful scenery makes this an attractive place to visit.

Berchtesgaden is beautiful in the winter...the area is host to many cross-country skiing opportunities and is a great weekend getaway if you need a break from city life. At Christmas time, especially Christmas Eve, Berchtesgaden is a magical place. The entire village is out as the local shooting clubs fire their blunderbus-type muskets in the air to scare away evil spirits. They do this for about am hour and top it off with the town band playing "Silent Night" which was written nearby. Visit http://www.tourismus-berchtesgaden.de/ for more info.

Great Pensions (B&B's) abound. Gästehaus Mitterweinfeld (www.mitterweinfeld.de) is a charming option...not sure how convenient they are for a non-German speaking guest, but the location is quite nice. The rooms have private baths and are crips and spacious.

Garmisch Partenkirchen is Germany's undisputed "winter sports capital", located only a short distance from the Austrian border in the country's southwestern corner. Famous for it's annual New Year Ski jumping competition televised all over the world, and as a former site of the Winter Olympics, Garmisch today is a large, cosmopolitan town with plenty to see and do both on and off the slopes.

It is a town that is also rich in history and culture. Local people often dress in traditional styles ("Dirndl" for women and "Lederhosen" for men) - without being paid to do so by the tourist board. Many of the older buildings are decorated with beautiful frescoes - wall paintings that are often centuries old. All around is magnificent mountain scenery, dominated by the mighty Zugspitze to which lifts rise over 2,962 metres (nearly 7,000 feet) from Garmisch - producing one of the world's biggest lift served verticals (although unfortunately it is not possible to ski all the way back down!).

The final string to the Garmisch bow is its status as a health resort, or rather as a "climatotherapeutic training centre" - a program of exercise and complete body management instigated with the help of the Institute of Medical Balneology and Climatology at the University of Munich. The objective is to prevent illness in its early stages by making the body and spirit and stronger, although Garmisch is also a good choice for those seeking to recuperate from existing conditions in the pure mountain air of the resort.

Garmisch, although known for it's winter activities, is a wonderful place to visit anytime of the year. One can easily travel there by train. Take the ICE from Frankfurt to Munich and change to the rural train system. It is situated as to allow for easy exploration to many truly unique towns. Oberammergau offers the Passion Play, which has been re-told every 10 years since the plague! Eibsee sits at the base of Zugspitze and offers breathtaking views of the mountain. Getting around town by taxi or bus is easy and affordable. Plan on a taxi costing 20 Euro for 4-5 people or bus about 3-4 Euro per person as of October 2005.

Ludwig II dedicated this castle to his friend Richard Wagner. Inside the castle there are displayed many pictures and scenes from the operas of Richard Wagner.

The castle was one of Bavaria's first buildings to use electric energy for light and a bell-essage-system used for calling the servants. Werner von Siemens himself built the electrical equipment for this Castle.

City of the three Rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz, this is Passau, located in the very eastern part of Bavaria named "Niederbayern". Human settlements have existed here at the confluence of the three rivers ever since prehistoric times. In the last millennium the city was considerably enlarged by the prince bishops of Passau, who made it their royal residence and capital of the largest Danube diocese.

The wonderful Baroque buildings that dominate the city today were built after the great fire of 1662. One of the most striking is cathedral of St. Stephan, which boasts the world’s biggest church organ. One of the best ways to enjoy the magic of Passau is with a sightseeing tour by ship.

Located on the banks of the Danube, Regensburg with its 150.000 inhabitants, is both a modern Bavarian city and still a medieval wonder. For more than 600 years - from 1245 till 1803, when Napoleon came - Regensburg has been a free imperial city and a buzzling trade and cultural centre. Lots of the medieval architecture survived the centuries and even the devastations of Second World War. Regensburg - founded in 179 by the roman emperor Marcus Aurelius is a historic city in a unique state of preservation, living witness to two thousand years of rich and colourful history. At every turn one encounters truly outstanding historical monuments and architectural marvels. The experience is deepened by the exquisite collections at the city's fine museums, and made yet more enjoyable by the typically Bavarian hospitality of the locals. Located on the beautiful Danube, Regensburg is also the perfect starting-place for river cruises and excursions.

This is the most important and most magnificent Gothic building in Bavaria. It was begun around 1250, replacing a Romaneque church of which the "Eselsturm" is the only remaining part above ground. Don't miss the late 13th century statue of the Annunciation and the beautiful stained-glass windows (14th century) in the south transept. In the cloisters - accessible only on guided tours - you will see many Romanesque frescoes. Concerts are held regularly. If you can catch by any chance tickets for the "Domspatzen" (the "Cathedral Sparrows"), do it, they have some of the finest more..

Schleissheim is just north of Munchen. In the small town you can find two major castles that are worth a visit. The Neues Schloss Schleisheim and the Altes Schloss are highlights and for anyone coming to Munich, they should be visited.

Another major site is the Fluwerft Schleissheim, where there is a museum dedicated to teh history of aviation.

Lovely place - great sites and amazing castles (2) Maximillian's place is being revamped and as such has some scaffolding on it at the present time. Ludwig's Neuschwanstein is lovely and unfortunately very incomplete - there are only a half dozen rooms to view but well worth the small cost of entry. I do recommend taking the bus up to this castle and consider walking down if you have no health concerns - otherwise it can be quite a go.

The small gathering of buildings is lovely and not too far from town for a trip in for groceries. So much to see and look at, not enough time in the day to enjoy it all. Absolutely breathtaking even on rainy days.

Traunstein is a small city in the very south east of Bavaria. It is named after the river Traun. Traunstein has a very nice little medival town centre. Nightlife: There are several Discos and Clubs (approximatly five or six) to be found in this city. One of them called the "Panzerhalle", this one is built in an old army base.
