The town has many wonderful pieces of architecture from the mansion of Duff House to the primary school with its fine Grecian style pillars. McPherson the freebooter was hanged here in 1700, it is said he wrote a tune while in the tolbooth (Jail) played it on his fiddle on the gallows, then asked the crowd if anyone wanted his fiddle. No one was brave enough to accept and he broke it over his knee beofre being strung up. During world war two there was an airfield at Boyndie about 4 mile west of Banff it went by the name of the 'Banff Strike Wing'. It was their job to attack the German convoys sailing down the Norwegian west coast and they did a mighty fine job. Every morning at dawn a scout plane with two Norwegian pilots would fly up the coast and identify where the German ships were, they informed the other squadrons who set off for the attacks. The king of Norway passed through Banff during WW2 and so did many other Norwegians, thought to be spies. Banff came through the war relatively unscathed except for the distillery and the east wing of Duff House (A prisoner of war camp at the time) both of which were bombed.
