Tropical North Queensland is a place of contrasts, adventure and amazement, rich in diverse pleasures and natural treasures. The tropical north's most famous attraction is the Great Barrier Reef - one of the world's great wonders. It is the largest and most complex expanse of living coral on earth and is home to a wide variety of colourful marine life: the perfect playground for an extraordinary range of recreational pursuits.

On the other side of the fence, we have The World Heritage listed rainforests of Tropical North Queensland. They are spectacular 'living museums', millions of years in the making. Breathtaking in their pristine grandeur, tranquil and unspoilt - an experience not to be missed.

In general, the casual, relaxed atmosphere of Tropical North Queensland is quite contagious. The welcome is as warm as the weather. The lifestyle is laid-back. Day and night, this place offers an intoxicating mix of adventure, discovery, relaxation and enjoyment. This multi-coloured, multifaceted region has so much to see and do. Experience unique places in unique ways - from white water rafting on the Tully River to scuba diving amongst kaleidoscopic coral caves, from lingering on idyllic beaches to trekking or mountain biking through unspoilt wilderness or explore the fascinating city of Brisbane or Cairns.

_________National Parks
Edit This
Fraser Island, off the Hervey Bay coast, is one of the many national parks in Queensland. This island, besides being the world’s largest sand island, offers great possibilities of exploring much of what Queensland has to offer at one go: beaches, forests, lakes and the corresponding fauna. Fraser Island is one of several islands that are proclaimed national parks. Other national park islands are located within the Great Barrier Reef Maritime Park. Although most visitors stay at the coast whether for diving or surfing activities, it would be a shame to miss out on one of the parks, especially Eungella in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area that stretches from about 200 kilometers north of Cairns to some 300 kilometers to the south. Because of the many national parks, the following list is by no means all comprising.

Surfers' Paradise

Surfers' Paradise

Timothy de Ruyter
Both the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast of Queensland offer some of the best beaches to surf, swim and sunbathe. Besides that, these areas have become increasingly popular with both locals and travellers so don’t be surprised when you’ll see a white sandy beach flanked by various hotels, bars and theme parks, such as Sea world and Wet ‘n Wild on the Gold Coast. Surfers Paradise, in between Southport and Coolangatta, has been the Mecca of surfing for a long time and this is where most of the action takes place. The Sunshine Coast is a good option when you want to head for beaches that are less crowded and when you can do without an overdosis of neon-lights.

Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see

Facing the Whitsunday Islands across the Coral Sea, Airlie Beach makes a great base for sailing and diving adventures or a little relaxation island style.

With Virgin Blue and Jet Star offering direct flights to nearby Proserpine (Whitsunday airport) Hamilton Island and Mackay from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, Airlie Beach is much more than a staging post on the East Coast pilgrimage that takes in Sydney, Byron, the Great Barrier Reef and Fraser Island before the long haul up to Cairns and Cape Tribulation.

Backpacking is still the life-blood of Airlie Beach and you can be sure of a steady stream of international visitors adding to the colourful and vibrant atmosphere and keeping beer prices to an absolute minimum.

Airlie Beach is a major tourist destination and together with the adjacent Shute Harbour, provide an embarkation point for both the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. The sea is inhabited by marine stingers from November to May. In order to provide somewhere for the hoards of visiting tourists to swim, the local council, has built a swimming lagoon on the foreshore.

________Getting There
Edit This
I got a cheap flight from Melbourne to Hamilton Island. From there, a $2 bus ride got me to the ferry, then the ferry to Shute Harbour cost around $33 one-way for a one hour trip. From Shute harbour, you won't have to wait long to grab the bus into Airlie Beach ($3). Once in the main strip you'll be fine.

You can also get there by bus. Greyhound buses www.greyhound.com.au have special rates for backpackers, or you can get a certain number of km, like my friend went all around Australia with a 25,000 km ticket or something.

Brisbane is Australia's third largest, but maybe not its hottest city. Lying amidst the subtropics of South-East Queensland, situated 25km (15mi) upstream from the mouth of the Brisbane River. Brisbane is ideally placed as Australia's most northern capital on the Pacific Rim. Having been host to a string of major international events in the 80s, including the 1982 Commonwealth Games and Expo 88, Brisbane has developed into a lively, cosmopolitan city with several interesting districts, a good street cafe scene, a great riverside park, a busy cultural calendar and decent nightlife. The compact city centre is built along and between the looping meanders of the river, making it easy to explore on foot. The transit centre, where you'll arrive if you're coming by bus, train or airport shuttle (see www.transinfo.com.au for timetables etc), is about 500m (550yd) west of the city centre. The airport is about 15km (9mi) north-east of the city centre.

Queen Street Mall is the main shopping mall in Brisbane and has several shopping centres within it, The Myer Centre, The Wintergarden, Queens Plaza, Broadway on the Mall, Brisbane Arcade, Queen Adelaide Building.

Eagle Street, the business centre, holds the Eagle Street and Riverside markets on weekends. The South Bank markets, at the South Bank Parklands and Brunswick Street Mall are also a good place to go bargain hunting.

Queensland's growing tourism industry has brought an influx of visitors to the capital, and with its near-perfect climate year-round, Brisbane comes as a pleasant surprise to most visitors. The city maintains a good infrastructure for conferences because there are plenty of good hotels and nice restaurants. It has some interesting museums and historical buildings as well as an excellent cultural centre to offer. The South Bank Parklands is the area south of the river and many people, both locals and travellers, like to spend some of their time here. This area has been transformed into a tropical paradise with lagoons, gardens, little shops and a beach. The people of Brisbane are known for their hospitality and the climate is great, so some people really like it there. Decide for yourself.

Brisbane is also surrounded by some of the state's major tourist destinations and there are plenty of options for daytrips where both residents and visitors can enjoy a wide range of landscapes. Check out Moreton Bay and its islands that provide the best place for all sorts of water sports. The Pacific Highway leads south to the Gold Coast and its well-known surf beaches. North of Brisbane is the seaside town of Redcliffe, the rainforest and picturesque countryside of Pine Rivers, Caboolture and the Glasshouse Mountains. Bribie Island offers the first surf beach to the north. The Sunshine Coast towns and hinterland are popular holiday spots. Travelling west of Brisbane, past Ipswich, you soon climb the Great Dividing Range to Toowoomba and the rich plains of the Darling Downs.

Bundaberg seems to have pretty much two attractions:

1. Turtle Watching (Mon Repos near Bundaberg is one of the region's main turtle breeding grounds), which you can do every evening between November and March.

2. Bundaberg is home to Australia's most famous and popular rum. From 10am to 3pm the Bundaberg distillery runs tours through the distillery. Those tours cost about $5-$10, depending on the discounts you qualify for (students: $7), and include two tastings of Bundy rum. Enjoy.

Other than that, there isn't much to see, and during harvesting season it's well worth booking ahead if you really plan to spend a night here, as Bundaberg is one of the centers for overseas work-and-travel fruit pickers...

Cairns is popular with many travellers because it is easily reached by plane and offers a perfect spot to explore the rest of Queensland. It offers some interesting sights, such as a handful of museums and the old wharf area. You think of an activity and there is probably the possibility to arrange it in Cairns. Or at least discuss it over a beer in one of the many bars that make Cairns’ nightlife into what it is known for these days. There are five shopping centres that you can find in the Cairns central business district. The Pier Marketplace has also a variety of shops and markets. From the pier, several boats set off for one of the islands known for their natural beauty. Because face it, Cairns is a nice place but the main reason why you came over here is probably to visit the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest Area. One of the marquee destinations on the Great Barrier Reef is Dunk Island, with a single resort surrounded by rain forest.

Cardwell is part of Cardwell Shire. It lies on the main transport routes along the east coast and is a popular tourist destination. Hinchinbrook Island lies off the shore.

The first Europeans settled in the area in January 1864 in order to create a port which they called "Port Hinchinbrook." Subsequently the town was renamed after Edward Cardwell, 1st Viscount Cardwell.

The Cardwell Shire Story is about this place. The aboriginal language boundary of Dyirbal and Warrgamay was to the north, between Tully and Cardwell.

Population: around 1200

Plan a nature travel Australian vacation itinerary. Major international and domestic transportation hubs are Cairns and Townsville, Queensland. Web search Cardwell, Tully and Mission Beach. Allow a minimum of five (5) days to explore the Tropical Cassowary Coast.

The Gold Coast with its splendid white sand beaches and its excellent waves, that’s how most people see this area that stretches out for about 40 kilometres from Main Beach to Coolangatta. The Gold Coast, that has been popular since the beginning of the 20th century, has turned into a real Gold Coast for entrepreneurs as well. Especially around Surfers Paradise, the Mecca of Surfing, you’ll find a high concentration of anything that will please the tourist, ranging from hotels and restaurants to discos and theme parks. Other beaches in the vicinity are Broadbeach, Palm Beach and Currumbin Beach. At the southern tip of the coast around Coolangatta are the pearls of the Gold Coast as far as beaches are concerned - a 30 to 40 minute trip from Surfers Paradise to Rainbow Bay, Kirra and Coolangatta (all close together) are worth it for the splendid point-break beaches that exist. Further north (2 hours north of the gold coast or 1 hour north of Brisbane), you’ll come across the quieter Sunshine Coast with beaches that are as impressive as the famous ones on the Gold Coast. From the Gold Coast, days-trips to one of the nearby national parks can be easily made. Springbrook in the mountains offers beautiful rainforest and hiking trails and excellent views over the Gold Coast, and can be done in a day trip from Surfers Paradise.

Lady Musgrave Island Palms

Lady Musgrave Island Palms

Timothy de Ruyter
The Great Barrier Reef stretches out for 2000 kilometres along the coast from the very northern tip of Queensland, Bamaga, to Bundaberg, better known as the Capricornia section of the Reef (it actually goes on until Papua New Guinea). It’s a sort of Australian Wall made out of diverse ecosystems that is also visible from space. Cairns is one of the major points from which to set off for a trip to the reef. Although you can reach many spots from whatever place on the eastern coast of Queensland, many people opt for Townsville.

From Townsville, you can easily set off for the Great Barrier Reef Marinepark, that consist of hundreds of impressive uninhabited island with secluded beaches where you can stay for a few days and explore the reef area with snorkelling or diving equipment. Although accommodation is expensive one of the cheapest options is probably camping. Make sure you’ve brought along everything you needed. The closest island to the coast is Long Island and visited by many people who want to explore the barrier reef for only a day or a few hours. Maybe it’s a good idea to set off for one of the many other islands or islands groups such as the Whitsunday Islands or the Molle Islands. Daydream Island, Hook Island, Lindeman Island or Hamilton Island. and these are only a few of the many. At the Capricorn section it is more expensive to get from the coast to one of the island. However, islands such as North West, Lady Musgrave and Tyron (all of them being national parks) offer the perfect spot for relaxation.

A little bit more to the south, you will find Fraser Island. Although the reef does not extend to this island, it is a beautiful melange of sand, sea, forests and lakes. Listed on the World Heritage List, it would be a shame to miss it when you're in the southern part of Queensland. Be aware of the dingoes.

Noosa Main Beach

Noosa Main Beach

Richard Greenwood

Noosa Heads is located approximately 2 hours north of Brisbane, or about 90 minutes from Brisbane International Airport. It is well known throughout Australia as a 'dream' holiday destination, and has in recent years seen a significantly increased flow of international tourists. In recent years an English Language school was opened, and this has seen an increase in longer term international visitors.

Through stringent planning guidelines, Noosa has maintained a near unique balance between nature and development. It is built largely around a series of stunning national parks, and is borderd by the Pacific Ocean and Noosa River.

Renowned as a surfing location, Noosa was selected by Longboarder magazine as one of the world's top 4 surfing destinations. There is a strong surf culture in the town, but little of the aggression that can be found in other places on the Australian Coast.
Whole Main Beach is covered with hotels or other forms of holiday accommodation. Cheapest way to sleep is at the beaches or if you are traveling with a van, you can practically park it anywhere you like. Next best thing is YHA hostel, Halse Lodge, with dorms starting from 25AUD/night.

You can visit the national park and find a nudist beach from Alexandria Bay at the end of one track. Only real nightclubs are The Rolling Rock in the middle of the Hastings street and The Villa in Noosaville, but if you are backpacking, you might want to see Koala Bars weekend parties. The Thursday night student night at the Koala Bar is particularly well attended. There are a series of smaller lounges and bars, and no end of world-class restaurants. Many feel that it is becomming increasingly difficult to find a cheap meal in Noosa, and travellers may want to try the newly opened Noosa Civic shopping centre, or some of the cheaper restaurants along Weyba Drive.

Noosa is not a location for tourists needing massive stimulation - and regular visitors and locals work hard to keep it that way. Rather than the location for theme parks and all-night clubs, Noosa is laid-back, friendly and a genuinely pleasant place to pass an idle day, a couple of weeks or a long term sabbatical.

Noosa Heads is a good place to meet travellers, and the locals are warm and welcoming to tourists. This is not always the case (try Byron Bay for the coldest welcome anywhere!) and adds to the significant charms of Noosa.
