More eastward you run into a more mountainious landscape with a romantically beautiful coastline that carries the name Asturias. This region has a lot in common with Wales. A real attraction is Oviedo , the capital of this region where you can see two of Europe's most exquisite pre-Romanesque churches, but there is no beaches in Oviedo, so you can find it at Gijón, the real capital of Asturias because it is the most cosmopolitan, cultural and popular city, and its two magnificent beaches makes the better choice.

Asturias is only 100 km wide, between the coast and the Cantabric Mountain, so you can find the best meat from calfs and the most varied types of fishes.

About gastronomy, you can find lots of typical sidrerías, where the sidra (apple-wine) is the most important drink.

If you like cheese, there are about 300 types of in the region. The more important is the Cabrales one, it looks like a blue cheese, but with a strong smell and taste.

Continuing our journey through the nothern parts of Spain, we will have our next stop at Cantabria, the more rural part of Spain. This region is especially famous for its extraorinary Picos de Europe (mountains)and it claims to have the highest density of cows. Santander, the capital and only large city, is a major summer resort.

Next to Cantabria you'll find the famous Basque country or Euskadi in the Basque language. When it isn't raining, Euskadi is one of the most charming parts of Spain with a very various landscape. San sebastian was the place where the wealthy Spaniards spent their summer bathing long before there were any costas. Furthermore you find Bilbao which as a city of interest in this Basque region.

La Rioja is a Spanish region that you'll find right under the Basque land. Famous because of its wonderful wine, this region's principal town is Logroño.

In the north of the region called Castilla León you'll find the city of Burgos, which is a genteel and quite pleasant town.

Our 'Northern journey' ends in the region where you can see some of the more western Pyrenees: Navarra. In the region Navarra Pamplona (the capital) is a very recommendable city.

The Plaza Mayor

The Plaza Mayor

Burgos is an important travel destination in the North of Spain. The main tourist attraction is the Cathedral, which was completed in 1222. It is modeled after the French cathedral of Bourges and reflects the Gothic style made popular in Spain by the Cistercian Order some time earlier. The cathedral houses the tomb of El Cid, a great knight who fought the Moors in Spain.

Other important sights in town include the Gothic churches of Santa Agueda, San Esteban, San Gil, San Lesmes, San Nicolás de Bari with the stone retable (or reredos) by Francis of Cologne, and Nuestra Señora la Real y Antigua de Gamonal.

Las Huelgas Monastery was founded by Alfonso VIII and has a royal pantheon. It has a museum of rich medieval fabrics.

Among the civil buildings that are worth a visit, El Rey Hospital founded by Alfonso VIII for the pilgrims on their way to Santiago deserves to be mentioned. It still preserves an attractive inner court called Patio de Romeros. In the 15th-century El Cordón House Felipe el Hermoso died and the Catholic Monarchs received Columbus after his return from his second voyage.

Also preserved are remains of the castle, once an important medieval fortress, sections of the walls and the arches of Santa Maria.

Leon is the capital of the Leon province. It is a nice provincial town and is mainly famous for its cathedral with its stunning stained glass windows. But the cathedral is far from the only sight. The City walls, the San Isidoro Collegiate Church and the San Marcos Convent are great as well.

Particularly interesting, a marvel in miniature in fact, is the Pantheon, closely related to the San Isidoro building but through a separate [paying] entrance. The wall and ceiling paintings are stunning, the colours hardly having faded over hundreds of years and upstairs the treasure and the invaluable old books can be seen. It is worth spending a bit of time on http://www.sanisidorodeleon.org/visita_panteon_eng.htm# before you go.

The famous Catalan architect Gaudi also left his traces here. He built the Botines House in 1892. The walled enclosure plus the adjoining area and several squares have been officially declared of artistic and architectural interest.

__________Getting There
Edit This

Leon is connected to a number of other Spanish cities by both train and bus and with others by bus only. Specifically it is connected to Madrid by both, as it is with San Sebastian and Vigo.

It is connected with Salamanca by bus via Zamora.
