| Albenga Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Along the coast, after Ceriale we find Albenga. The town is one of the most interesting in Liguria and for some historical aspects is second only to Genoa. |
|
| The town dates back to Roman origins and settlement can be seen in
the remains of suburban villas along the route of the ancient Via Julia
Augusta, and the ruins of the baths, an aqueduct, the amphitheater and a
number of tombs, including the so-called "Pilone". Albenga's center has
retained its compact medieval structure. The center is Piazza San Michele,
where you find the cathedral, considered one of the finest late Gothic
monuments in Liguria. The interior of the church, which has been restored to
its medieval appearance, houses frescoes by Carrega, a panel painted by
Pancalino in 1520 and a fifteenth-century Pentecost, in addition to the
monumental nineteenth-century Serassi organ. A few meters away stands the
baptistery, which has remained practically intact since the fifth century,
and the medieval complex of the Palazzo Vecchio del Comune (Old City Hall). Other interesting things can be seen in Piazza Girolamo Rossi, with its intact example of a fourteenth-century house, and on Via Bernardo Ricci which retains much of its original appearance. A visit to the museums of Albenga also provides the opportunity to explore: the Palazzo Vecchio and the decorated rooms of Palazzo Peloso Cepolla, formerly the archbishop's palace. The main water corse is river Centa (3 km long) formed by four smaller ones : Neva, Lerrone, and the ones coming from the related Arroscia valley and Pennavaire valley, here is the now renown Colletta "cyber village". Its "Piana" is the most fertile land in Liguria for vegetable products, herbs and high-value early produce, using advanced farming methods and exported all over Italy and the world. The town has an interesting beach and an interesting system of walking path as for example the above said Via Julia Augusta around it. Also an important pilgrim's passage way passed over here which is "The Via Julia", an ancient roman road and now a nice walk to see the town from above. __________Sights Edit This Some places and sights are really worth a visit as they are unique in the region. Surely the Centre with the Cathedral and the towers - about ten are still visible today - built as symbol of power and prestige by the ancient families. The structure of the present center has not changed since medieval times. The Baptistery, a roman building is probably the most important in Liguria. Next to the it the Cathedral which dates back to the 5th Century with Byzantine, Longobards, Frankish remains. The Diocesan museum with its splendid works of art of different ages is really worth seeing. The 16th-century Peloso-Cepolla Palace has the Naval Roman Museum with a valuable collection of anchors and amphoras and many ship ancient equipment which have been found sunk in front of Albenga during the centuries. If you are looking for modern but also rare books you should go to the near S.Michele Bookshop (Via S. Michele 1, the Patron of Albenga). Gerry, the owner, is an expert and quite famous for being one of the organizers of Ceriale Peagna Ligurian book meetings and fair. The Imperial Roman Age was for the city of Albingaunum the most important - part of it is today shown along the "Via Julia" - period until the barbarians partly destroyed the town at the end of the 4th century. It was then rebuilt by the general Costanzo in order to face medieval struggles. Monasteries were founded to control the Saracens and the nearby territories, making so the town and its Bishop of a great importance. It was independent until the total submission to the Republic of Genoa took place in 1251. The town followed then the historical events of Liguria: after a short period of Napoleon's conquest, it was annexed to the Sardinia Kingdom in 1815 and in 1861 in the Kingdom of Italy. After important works of land reclamation of the plain, finished in 1913, Albenga lived a progressive increase in prosperity and nowadays it can be considered one of the most remarkable agricultural and tourist centers of the Liguria region. Enrico Pelos, Albenga editor, Liguria (general) editor, Osinga.com, Genoa, Italy. pelos@tn.village.it http://www.global.village.it/~pelos/index.htm _____Getting Around Edit This Getting around Albenga is quite easy as the town is well designed in its piana. You can easily walk down to the beaches and visiting the town center for some shopping. Only during summertime is quite busy to go around by car due to the holyday people but generally it is possible to go everywhere in few munits with no serious problems. There are many parkings so it is better to live the car and enjoy the town trek. Enrico Pelos, Albenga editor, Liguria (general) editor, Osinga.com, Genoa, Italy. pelos@tn.village.it http://www.global.village.it/~pelos/index.htm ____Economy Edit This Ceriale economy is mainly based on tourism, agriculture and fishing. While agriculture found its main production on vegetables, flowers, olives and grapes which are cultivated in its "piana" a very advanced way, fish is still "fished", through the ancient way, throwing the nets into the sea and not using farmed fish. Quality varies depenfing on the season. The panoramic view of the plain shown (on the general section) that it is characterized by lots of farms scattered all over and a continuous extent of glass-houses for flower cultivation. The lower hills show extensive vegetable and fruit-farming vineyards. Tourism is now becoming more and more important and now a particular effort is put on to prepare the town to offer its best during sumertime with its nice beaches and campings for every taste and money. Enrico Pelos, Albenga editor, Liguria (general) editor, Osinga.com, Genoa, Italy. pelos@tn.village.it http://www.global.village.it/~pelos/index.htm _______Gallinara Island Edit This The Gallinara Regional Park is concerning this rocky and luxuriant island just on mile off the Albenga beach. It was inhabited since ancient times. Its name derive from the presence in the roman age of wild hens ("galline" in Italian) and it is largely mentioned by Latin writers. From documents we know that St. Martin de Tours lived here from 356 to 360 A.C. and the afterwards a community of hermits was founded on the island. A monastery was dedicated to St. Mary and St. Martin and probably run by benedectines after the 8th century becoming so an outpost of Christianity in Liguria. They became extremely rich and powerful to arrive to own large properties in Liguria, Provence and Catalogne. In the 15th century the island passed to the Albenga church and since last century they are private property and on the top the ruins of the monastery has been transformed in a villa. The tower is a classica example of military architecture of the 16th century and it was once included in the coastal fortification system of the Genoa Republic. The typical Mediterranean flora concerns mostly this island and it is a particular habitat for many species of birds and so the entrance is forbidden unless you have a very special permit. But proper for this reason and in this particular view you can stil see all the deep blue sea and all around is a wonderful place for swimming and boating. Very important from the tourist point of view is the beautiful underwater world surrounding the island; it is also archaelogically protected (like the wreck of the 1st century ship of burden lyng not far away) and sometimes it is possible to find new interesting roman remains - many of which are visible in the Naval Museum - still nowadays. Enrico Pelos, Albenga editor, Liguria (general) editor, Osinga.com, Genoa, Italy. pelos@tn.village.it http://www.global.village.it/~pelos/index.htm __________Via Julia Augusta Edit This The trekking path called "Via Julia Augusta" is the ancient roman road which passed over here on his way to Alassio and Ceriale. A view of the real ancient roman pavement is shown here. The itinerary has been completely restored and it takes about 1 hour if you go running and 2, 3 or 4 if you enjoy the panorama, just above the sea level and the many roman ruins along the walking. it is almost an aerial view that takes you from Albenga to Alassio and a full immersion in olive trees and other wonderful mediterranean vegetation. _________ Festivals and major annual events of many types are held all around Albenga. An important car rally called "Monti savonesi"(Savona mountains) is held generally on May. Another car event "The 500 Fiat meeting" is held on June and has estimators coming from all over Europe and sometime from other continents. In December a well known piano music festival takes place with musicians from all over Italy. Concerts are held on open air together with many local religious festivals and "sagras" during summertime. Flowers, vegetables and wines - the "Pigato wine, the most interesting, is held in September - specialised fairs are held on the during the year but they change date in accordance to other main regional events.

[modifica] AltroAccessibile anche tramite aereo grazie all'Aeroporto Internazionale "C.
