| Agadez Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see i Agadez is the Nigerien sister of Timbuktu in Mali. Their histories are alike, their structures are alike, and the fascination they have on travelers is alike as well. If you approach overland you’ll see it rise right out of the desert. The town has only 20.000 inhabitants who live in sand-brick houses that blend in with the countryside. Three tribes walk the streets: the Fulani (aka Fulbe, Peluh or Halpulaar) who wear large hats that look like the hats worn by the Chinese; the Hausa merchants dressed in long robes; and the nomadic Tuaregs who give chilling looks from beneath massive turbans. If you go to the outskirts of town to the goat and mutton market, you will catch a glimpse of the nomadic housing creatively constructed from desert twigs and fly away plastic bags. |

| The main sights are the central market, the 16th-century mosque, the
Sultan's Palace, the camel market and some interesting silver shops; the
Croix d'Agadez is famous in all of the Sahel, here you can get the real
thing. The Artisan Center is an amazing place to observe the metal work that
is done by a couple dozen artists, all sitting cross legged on the floor,
tapping away at their peices. If the political situation permits excursions can be arranged to go by camel or other conveyance into the nearby Air Mountains, where the Tuaregs live. That will be an unforgettable trip. Also schedule for a one to seven day trip in a four by four out to the sand dunes and oasises. __________Sights Edit This There is enough to see and do in Agadez for a few days. Here are the most important sights of the town. [Add Sight] Sultan's Palace Edit This x If you want to meet a real Sultan, this is your chance. Although you are not allowed in the palace - it's the Sultan's house - you can be received by the Sultan in one of the first courts. Compared to his colleague in Zinder the Sultan is not well off, but you can try to help him close the gap, because his guards do expect a tip after your audience. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Mosque Edit This The tower of the mosque is the best point for orientation in Agadez. It is one of the typical Sahal strcutures you can also find in Mali. You can enter the Mosque and climb the tower which gives you a good view over the town and on good days of the Air mountains. You are not allowed to enter on Friday mornings. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Camel Market Edit This x The Camel market has camels, donkeys, goats sheep and salt from the Salt mines in the desert. it's a lively and colourful market, but it becomes less and less busy after 11:00 AM, zo you are advised to go a bit early. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Old City Edit This x There are quite a few old Hausa houses in Zgadez as well, although Zinder is a better place for this. Walk through the narrow streets and ask for 'les belles facades' - French for pretty houses. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] ___________Getting There Edit This x Most people who come from the South, take the Tahoua - Birnin Konni road, which is a lot better than the Zinder road. There is still a good 100 km of road missing on the latter one. But if you have a 4WD, and like a bit of adventure, the Zinder one is a lot more fun. If you are going to Zinder it is still faster than the long detour via Tahoua. ________Day Trips Edit This Tours to the desert and mountains are readily available in Agadez. You just have to find the right group of people and the right guides. There are basically three options. Either you book a tour ahead, that is in the US or (better) France, or you book one here. The last option is to arrange everything by yourself, which can be done. BE sure to hire a good 4WD, get a knowledgable guide and the right government permission. [Add Day Trip] Chiriet Voyage Edit This x This local travel agency is run by Balal, the son of one of the most famous Sahara Guides. He promises good prices, good cars, local guides and modern communications. Telephone: (227) 440-251 or (227) 98 23 63.
